This is an email I received from Notts County this morning.

Dear Tony

I asked the media team here at meadow lane if they would assist me in sending out a letter to supporters just to say hello as much as anything and to reassure you how much it means to me to have been given this opportunity to manage Notts County Football Club, my club.

You may be one who has voiced support for my appointment, you may be one who has declared indignation at my return to Meadow lane as manager at the current time, I haven't had to look too hard to find examples of both!

For those that have offered support, I would like to thank you wholeheartedly for your backing, it really does mean a lot to me. For those that disagree with my appointment, I offer you my word that I will be doing all that I can to win you round, but I would couple this with a very simple observation, which is that this club is, and always has been, stronger when everyone involved is pulling in the same direction.

Notts County is a community club, we musn't lose sight of that. I know what it means to support this club and I know what it means to play for this club and I will be instilling that in my players, because I want to see pride, passion and belief in the shirt from every single member of the squad when they are asked to take to the field, it's what this club demands and what you, the fans, deserve.

I don't expect everyone to be behind me as manager from the outset, I have a lot of hard work ahead of me to prove myself in this new role, but I would expect everyone who calls himself or herself a Notts County fan to be behind the club, because it helps nobody if we are divided.

My first game in charge will be this weekend, as we travel to Hartlepool United in the FA Cup and I know that it hasn't been the happiest of hunting grounds for Notts in the past, or indeed for our managers!

But what a great lift it would give everyone involved with the club if we could get a win and get our name in the draw for the next round. I don't know about you but waiting for our number to be drawn out on a Sunday afternoon is one of the things I genuinely love about football, there's a real buzz about it.

It will be a hard game, I know that, Hartlepool are in decent form at the minute, but we have plenty of talent in the squad that I have available to me and I will be calling on the lads to show that they are better than our current league position suggests.

I would like to thank in advance, any of you that are making the journey up to Victoria Park I know what a difference a vocal travelling support can make to a team.

I'm sure you've heard a lot of what I've said before and some you will be thinking that this is just recycled rhetoric, but I hope to be a manager that can connect with the fans and I felt it important to make contact at this early stage so that we can look to move forwards together.

All I can say is that this is my club and I would not have taken this role if I didn't think I could be successful, I am not coming into this blind or naive, I am determined and focussed and want what I hope you want too, a successful and thriving Notts County Football Club.

Let's get this club moving.

I don't think fans need reassuring of how much Notts means to him, it's clearly obvious. This is another passionate response by him, although some might say it's a case of 'words' and we'll judge actions but that said he's so far started in a very positive way. I feel I am settling and warming to Shaun, as I've said he'll have my support but as fans we no doubt would have preferred 'experience'.

It's time to cast our views and feelings a-side and give the new manager, plus his assistant backing.

Personally, I won't judge him until we've given him time to conduct himself. I think 5 games, to see the work progressing and 15 to be the period where we will know.~

Just hopeful he can bridge the players to the fans, whilst keeping himself in a good report with us. I really wish him well :)

It took me ages to type that out because it came as a blooming jpeg!!

I thought it was a good message from Shaun, well thought out, I don't know whether he would write it himself or whether someone at the club wrote it for him but well done for sending it out so quickly lets hope it galvanises some support for him and the club as we enter a crucial stage in our history.

I hope to hear the Kop singing Shaun Derry's Black and White Army, very soon. If he gets off to a good start I'm sure more people will warm to him and forget their different views on managers.

Excellent from the heart letter, it seems very much akin to the one sent out by Mr T earlier in the season.

Do we have Alistair Campbell working for us? Either way it looks like they both use the same spin doctor.

I notice that at no point does he ask us to get behind us number 2, Phew... (well not directly anyways)

Now hopefully I will have an easy night at work tonight and make it across route 66 tomorrow.

It's been a long time since the fans got behind a manager. I've enjoyed all his interviews so far because he shows passion for the club and he is honest about the predicament we are in. I would love to see him succeed cos it doesn't get much better than a manager who supports Notts County and really does feel the pain of losing matches! He needs to get rid of any players who don't show total commitment, loyalty and desire to win. Too many games this season I have felt the need to question whether certain players were giving their all! I hope we can kick start the season with an FA Cup win and that Shaun can motivate the current squad! I personally feel that we need to bring in a couple of players to toughen the side up!

I would say three, and I wonder what Stubbsy, Killer and Paul Harding are doing right now. get ya kit on buys and get down the lane, for a special mission.
