Don Masson was one of my grandfather Ray's favourite players, even @GrannyPie admired him and I can remember how pleased she was to have him as a friend of Facebook. He's a very nice person, I have spoken to him numerous times but obviously his playing days are well before my time of watching Notts. It doesn't take away the brilliance of his magic, as many fans tell me stories which is awesome. I have to admit, I made a mistake sharing this way too earlier than I intended. I don't know what happened, but at least it's done well.

Darth Vader's Voice Silenced
Chris replied to Wheelbarrow repair man's topic in Granny Pie's General Discussion
He played a former baseball player in one of my favourite family films; he was a great actor. Coming to America, where he plays a king, is a classic. Rest in Peace, King Jaffe Joffer, Mr. Mertle, Terence Mann and legendary James Earl Jones. -
Back From The Dead
Chris replied to Wheelbarrow repair man's topic in Granny Pie's General Discussion
It must have been a very scary experience, not just for you but your family. Even if you don't remember much, I know what it's like when to wake up not remembering anything. Totally different, but I broke my nose as a child riding my friend's bike. I took off and landed in my neighbour's rockery filled with large stones. I don't remember anything, I supposedly was awake, but I only remember waking up in hospital. Enough about me, as I say it's not nice, and I can only imagine how worse it is to be told you had died too. No need to thank me, I didn't really do much, but I am glad you have managed to find yourself back to the site and are able to sign in now. Take good care of yourself and your ticker. Just do take comfort in everyone wishing you well, because we do look out for each other here. -
Name Your Ultimate Notts Team From Notts Players Down The Years
Chris replied to Robbie's topic in Jimmy Sirrel Stand
GK Kasper Schmicheal Steve Finnan Mike Edwards Gary Liddle Alan Sheehan Ian Baraclough Phil Turner Paul Devlin Danny Allsopp Lee Hughes Gary McSwegan Formation: 4-3-3 I really wanted to have three strikers, these are all players I have seen play for Notts. -
I think realistically, they have always been a mid-table National League team. Their success seemed a bit of an overachievement, but their relegation was them underperforming. I don't think they strengthened themselves all that well compared to other teams and ended up in very poor form. I wonder if their fans have any involvement with this? If they wanted him back, then it would make a bit more sense, but I can't imagine it was easy discussions at first.

I saw Jason Manford at Skegness in one of the bigger arcades with one of his children, before he went off to what I assume were over family members. I didn't bother him, or anything like that. I did see some others approach him and ask for his signature and photo, which he did, but I felt sorry for him because he was clearly having downtime with his family. Not much to the story, other than at times when I upload pictures to Facebook - certain friends tell me I look like him. At least it's better than that Welsh snooker player, Mark Williams.

I loved the original but when it was rebooted with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer, I really learned to appreciate it. I felt disappointed that the BBC axed it. I think it only made 2 seasons before it was abandoned? The original I have seen numerous times when I was younger at my parents, my childhood is filled with comedies like Porridge, Rising Damp, Are you Being Served? etc. I wasn't aware that Kenneth Cope had passed on. It's very sad news. @super_ram

I once met Jools Holland when I had to hand-deliver him a letter, as he was staying at my workplace. He was playing at the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham (obvious as I wasn't talking from the Park area to another city). After getting through various people, I handed him the letter and he thanked me. I was about to walk off, when he asked me if I knew who he was. It's a bit strange, as the letter had his name on, and I had been told to only hand it over to him directly. I said, yes. He asked me if I liked his music, he told me to be honest. I told him no, I didn't and that I wasn't sure I knew anyone who did. He laughed, then started playing a piano while he was sat in front. He thanked me again for taking him the letter and told me he liked that I was honest. In hindsight, I probably should have just said Yes and then left it at that, making the excuse that I really had to get back. -- I could also tell of a time when Marco Pierre White went knife to knife with the restaurant's head chef, after exchanging insults to him. I wasn't involved with this, but watched it all with my own eyes. Pierre White repeatedly returned his meals. A television company was filming something, where two other famous chefs had also been a part of. For some reason, Pierre White started making personal insults to our head chef who blew a casket over it. The production company had to halter filming, when the head chef decided to carve one of his knives into the hot pass. To which, Pierre White started f****** and b***** it. It wasn't full on daggers.

It's sad news, but we appreciate being kept in the loop. There are many here, who might not know David personally but will have taken a shine to @AmericanPie. He's missed on the site, but it's even sadder to think that he's extremely unwell. I am thinking positive vibes and hoping that David can at least be comfortable in his situation. Please do let him know we all care and pass on our messages.

BREAKING: Hearing over Man City's 115 Charges to begin Monday, 16th Sept.
Chris replied to Robbie's topic in English Football
Wow.... Breaking news at it's very best. They've been charged, let's get in over and done with If they've broken rules (yes I know they have) it needs to be dealt with appropriately. Not sure, Sky Sports needed to act like it's a big thing, when it's only a slither of news. It's like ordering Oasis tickets, and getting bottles of the Oasis drink in return. Very lacklustre! -
This is brilliant news, Jodi Jones is a massive player for us. It's great to see that Notts has managed to extend his stay with us; he's by far one of the most popular players and is someone younger fans connect with due to his quality and performances. All these things are very important for a club like ours. I thought he would extend, but I was thinking it would be nearer December or early January. Always believe in, Jodi Jones!

Excellent article on Notts v Accrington by Tom Reed
Chris replied to Piethagoram's topic in Jimmy Sirrel Stand
The article has done the rounds around our club, so I hope Tom Reed is pleased by the response. It's a great article, which showcases what it's like at Notts and Meadow Lane. I do find the Terrace Edition to be a very interesting read, as it's got it's own style and focus. Tom did an excellent job putting his thoughts over, hopefully, he will like the comments shared but I do encourage people to check out the site itself, plus their social media pages. Surely, they undergo thorough checks? I would assume the cricketer knew, so surely it would be a form of cheating? I am not sure how 12 points is a suitable punishment. Cricket is a weird sport, where cheaters don't seem to be held accountable like other sports do. I thought it was considered 'the gentleman's game', with a lot of sportsmanship? It seems lost these days. As someone with zero interest in cricket, I hear and read so many unsporting things.

Alex Bass: "Notts County move can bring best out of me".
Chris replied to Robbie's topic in Jimmy Sirrel Stand
@Robbie Absolutely, I have seen Aidan Stone working hard in training. He has shared pictures of him working hard, with captions about being ready. I do feel sorry for him, he's been made unwanted and exiled, I would play him ahead of Sam Slocombe when it comes to the bench. I wish the club had a proper reserve team, as for your points - it would help all involved. Friendlies against various teams, even if at a higher level than us, does nothing in comparison to being in a competitive league. It also gives a clearer marker as to where the level of players are, as they are amongst teams similar to their own ability. I don't see Alex Bass being replaced, but having our backup keepers ready and having played games is much better than just training alone. -

Weekly chat - 9th to 15th September
Chris replied to Fan of Big Tone's topic in Granny Pie's General Discussion
I don't want to seem like I am going on about being unwell etc, but I am starting to feel better. It's not been so bad, more cloudy and like the start of coming down with a cold but without the runny nose. I've been taking cough medicine that has honey, which massively helps. I don't usually like taking medication, as I prefer my body to fight it, but certain things I do because it just makes things better. I'm trying to sit upright as much as I can today, if my back allows it. I have been working hard on the site, in various areas and making sure I get much of my "to-do-list" down. Today, it does feel cold. It's the first time I have had to remain under a duvet in my bedroom. I have no plans to do anything outside the house, I am just trying to rest whilst being as productive as possible. I am thinking about going to see Super, a few times next week like I did recently where I take my laptop etc with me, so I can work away from home. It was nice to have a change of scenery and to catch up with him. I've been drinking no end of water recently, which is something I do a lot when feeling unwell. I need to weigh myself at some point, so I can keep an eye on my weight loss journey. I hope everyone else is feeling okay, I enjoy reading about all of your days. -
@KingMaynard had me in stitches when I read his comment. I wasn't aware that they had any sort of 'team up' with Xbox. I would have associated Football Manager more with PC, although I am aware it's on Xbox. What a hilarious remark! I fully endorse more of these types of comments.

Alex Bass: "Notts County move can bring best out of me".
Chris replied to Robbie's topic in Jimmy Sirrel Stand
I am very impressed by him; I think he is the closest to being an all round keeper that we have had. It might be overlooked, but when you have a keeper that doesn't want to see his team concede goals that can be one of the best attributes to have. It can be a driving force to improve, be better and ensure that a considerable amount of thought goes into every decision made on the pitch. Speaking on match days, fans have nothing but praise for him - although some did express comments for the goal Grimsby scored (which I missed) but I see that has a defensive mistake. He's a very good keeper, who should grow further in the role of our number one. I think the decision by Notts to sign him is a very good decision because he could have easily ended up somewhere else. We now have some who look good with the ball at his feet, can come for the ball if needed, pulls off good saves, strong in commanding his box, excellent in the distribution department and solid with aerial threats. Best keeper we have had in a long time in terms of their all round game, this said, I do believe Sam Slocombe and Aidan Stone are good enough backups. However, they possess contrasting weaknesses. If we were able to combine the best of each of them, I think we'd have someone closer to what we have with Alex Bass. -
Introduction: Name: Steff Bale How long have you supported Bromley? I have been attending Bromley matches since I was 11 years old. I’m 52 now! I am a Bromley fan, but many Bromley supporters support other clubs, especially big London clubs. I used to watch Arsenal more than Bromley, but for the last few years, I have been going to watch Bromley more than Arsenal. Are you a season ticket holder? I was a season ticket holder at Bromley until this season when they changed it all. You now have to be in a certain area of the ground, but I prefer to watch home games in different areas of the ground and I do not wish to be restricted, so no season ticket this season due to that reason! Age? I am aged 52. Favourite Player? I would say my favourite player has to be Michael Cheek. He’s the top scorer every season and has scored all the important goals for Bromley, including winning the FA Trophy at Wembley against Wrexham and the play-off final against Solihull to win promotion. He also hit the ground running and is scoring in League 2 as well! How does it feel to be in the Football League, and how has the journey been for Bromley so far? It still doesn’t feel real, to be honest, a club like Bromley in the Football League. I still feel like it’s a dream! Some of the away trips are to epic places with big stadiums, clubs with massive history, and some have even been in the Premier League! It’s what you dream of, really! Bromley have done well so far, holding their own, winning the first 2 games, then a couple of losses (one was very unlucky) and a draw last Saturday away at Colchester. Very credible so far and don’t look out of place in League 2 at all. I think we will be fine. Who are Bromley’s standout players this season, and what impact do you think they will have on the game? I think Grant Smith in goal is outstanding and has kept us in the game many times. He's very solid, one of the best in the league in many people's opinion, including mine. Our defence is solid, all very tall big guys. Byron Webster is excellent at CB, our captain with a huge amount of league experience at different clubs, including Millwall. Kamarl Grant is solid in defence on loan from Millwall. He's doing a fantastic job. Also, Idris Odutayo in defence is very solid, to name a few! Up front, as mentioned, Michael Cheek is excellent and will always have a chance of scoring. He's been top scorer since he joined the club and has been absolutely outstanding, scoring this season too! Corey Whitely is also very good, chipping in with goals, and Marcus Dinanga, who signed from Gateshead with a good goal-scoring record, is one to watch this season. The squad is very well-balanced with experience, young talent, loan players, and some Bromley stalwarts who have worked hard to get into the league. What is Bromley’s preferred formation and style of play, and how do you think Notts County can counter it? This is a bit tricky, to be honest, although some Bromley fans might disagree. I don’t think Andy Woodman has finally found his best starting XI just yet. Obviously, there are players like Cheek and Webster who will always start, but other players come in and out of the side partly due to the injuries and suspensions this season. It was interesting the changes that were made for the EFL Cup match with Cambridge. The team had been rotated, so many squad players started and played really well. This has given Manager Andy Woodman more choices. Bromley like to play an attacking style with high pressing. They will expose opposition defences’ weaknesses, especially down the flanks. Hayes Lane has become a hard ground for away teams due to this. Notts County are an excellent side and always have a good striker who will score. I’m concerned about Notts County’s attacking options, and I think that alone may well be their biggest strength to counter Bromley. How has Bromley’s manager been influencing their tactics, and what do you think his approach will be for this game? Andy Woodman is always very calm and approaches games with a calm attitude. I don’t know exactly how he will approach the game or who will start exactly. I fully expect an attacking approach against Notts County and Bromley must make chances count! I’m sure Andy Woodman will drum that into the team! Andy Woodman is very influential when it comes to tactics, along with assistant manager Alan Dunn. The club recruited a gamer to the staff who was an expert player of Football Manager! This had a lot of publicity and was a brilliant move by the club. This has resulted in expert analysis of opposition, help with team selection through stats to assist the management team. This is working very well by all accounts. How has Bromley’s form been so far this season, and what challenges do you think Notts County may face at Hayes Lane? Bromley’s form is up and down, but they are holding their own in League 2. Hayes Lane is a very difficult place to come and get a result, even though Crewe recently scored 2 very late goals to win 1-2. Bromley’s home form is good and not many teams get a result there. It won’t be easy at all for Notts County, especially in a tight ground which is the complete opposite of the huge Meadow Lane stadium. I think Notts County will have their work cut out and may find Bromley a bit of a handful, especially up front! How has Bromley’s defence been performing, and how do you feel the game will go against Notts County? Bromley have a good defence and a good keeper. They are quite solid. The only criticism is they can switch off late on. I predict 2-2 and an end-to-end game. Bromley must be very careful of McGoldrick, who is still brilliant at scoring goals wherever he goes! What has the journey been like for Bromley over the past few seasons, and how have they adapted to life in the Football League? Are there any key moments or significant tests that have shaped their experience? Bromley has slowly climbed the leagues to make it into the Football League. They did well in the National League for 10 years but needed to get over the line into the Football League, which they managed. For me, the key moments of recent history have been promotion to the National League, the FA Trophy Finals at Wembley, winning one by beating the mighty Wrexham with Michael Cheek scoring, and of course the play-off final at Wembley and Cheek taking us into the league along with the team scoring the penalties in the shoot-out! The significant tests have been all those things plus coming so close to promotion and play-offs. Everything has shaped the club and players into what they are and where they are now. It’s taken a lot of years, but this small South London/Kent football club surrounded by big London clubs is in the Football League to stay!! Final comments from Chris I think Bromley will present a challenge for Notts, one where I hope our quality in creativity and possession will result in an entertaining game. We shouldn't underestimate our opposition, at home they can be a very difficult team to break down, but if pressure can be asserted and the magpies' play to their potential I do feel encouraged. The Ravens will certainly try to press and counter Notts, they have some very capable players that defensively we must manage, but I feel the game could go either way, with a 1-1 draw or 1-2 win for Notts. I am hoping Alex Bass can retain another clean sheet, but I feel it's likely that Bromley will at least score once. Maynard's Selection Conundrum. Who Should be in His Starting 11?
Chris replied to Robbie's topic in Jimmy Sirrel Stand
My line-up would be. Bass Macari, Platt, Bedeau Wing-backs: Jodi Jones and Nick Tsaroulla. George Abbott, Conor Grant, Dan Crowley Scott, Jatta -- Scott could be replaced with Curtis Edwards or Grant. Likewise, Jatta could easily be dropped for David McGoldrick. I like Scott behind the striker, playing in an attacking role and preferably less out wide. More, where the actions build near to the opposition's goal. I don't mind McGoldrick drifting further back, but I do think he plays best when shadowing the striker (unless he is the striker) -
World Suicide Prevention Day
Chris replied to Piethagoram's topic in Granny Pie's General Discussion
From my perspective, I think I hide well until it becomes too difficult. There's been recent seasons where even going to Notts has been hard, but you can let yourself go for 90 minutes with football and the community side to matches being a good distraction. Unfortunately, I did realise that sometimes my mental struggles can lead to poor decisions, but I do reflect on things and try to learn from it. I practice self-managed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). I understand the cycles and how things end up looping back, I find it practical over seeing someone who pretends to understand my issues but draws textbook conclusions. I try to be open, as I acknowledge it does help me but can be branded as 'attention seeking'. When I say, I don't like attention, I really do mean it. Yet, I can understand how it might be received by someone who isn't used to or cares about depression. Unfortunately, I do think it can make you a target with unpleasant people. My encouragement is just to show a little care. I have spent hours observing Reddit, and talking to people who feel suicidal. Often, it's feeling alone which can cause it. I think for me, the thought of losing my mum has effected me for many years and when it happened I sort of did okay for the first few months. Having Notts games helped, but out of season it was like being hit by an oncoming truck. Still, I do feel much happier these days. Last week I had a tough few days, but honestly most have been so much better since I had time to reflect. This isn't aimed at making it about me, I am just trying to share my perspective. I don't like the thought of anyone struggling; depression is awful. We live short lives, and it can be the worst controlling aspect of anyone's life. Potential and happiness can be ruined, but with a little support. It can help someone lost, and struggling to find their feet. Correy Campbell, Tim Arnold, and Mark Dicko have been incredible sources of support for me on Twitter. -
Maynard's Selection Conundrum. Who Should be in His Starting 11?
Chris replied to Robbie's topic in Jimmy Sirrel Stand
If we start off by talking about form and reliability, I think the whole squad at least with the outfield players have the ability to come in. At the moment, the only player who hasn't impressed me is Adam Chicksen. I'm struggling to see where he fits in, but I desperately cling on to the fact he could be pushed to produce the form we had during our promotion winning season. That's been his only real good season, prior to that he looked destined to be released and this is how I feel things look right now for him. David McGoldrick in his current form is making it difficult for him to be dropped, though I still believe we need to carefully manage his minutes. I don't deny he can be a good player, but he does burn out and underperform. We need to maintain his current form and fight, as keeping him on the bench is why he's done so well IMO when he has been started. Jatta, once he returns, might find himself on the bench. The options for the starting 11 could be very different based on who we play, and we are lucky that everyone who has played so far looks just as good to start. Even those who have come on from the bench, minus my earlier exception. It's a very good conundrum for Stuart Maynard to have. -
Brazil and Argentina both lose in World Cup qualifiers
Chris replied to Piethagoram's topic in International Football
Brazil has struggled for some time to integrate their younger talent, so many bright stars of theirs that have fallen short on the international stage. Defensively, they tend to have very overhyped defenders, but on paper I think it's one of their weakest areas. Their desire to have defenders who are skilful and show flare going forward, comes at the expense of actual defensive minds. Don't get me wrong, they are blessed with heaps of talent but even in goal, they should be better. Some only show "world-class" at club level. Argentina rely too much on the reputation of big talent, at the cost of bring through good youngsters. They have some very exciting midfielders on the fringe of international football, but haven't quite given any of them a fair chance. Still, I am surprised to see them lose in the qualifiers. -
