Notts County found themselves the victims of a robbery in Coventry this evening as referee Gavin Ward awarded the most ridiculous penalty decision you will see in a long time to help Coventry City secure a late 1-1 draw in Saturday night's League Two semi-final playoff first leg at the Ricoh Arena. The Sky Blues began brightly on a rain-sodden pitch in the West Midlands, with Marc McNulty being played clean through by Jordan Shipley and firing against the foot of the Notts post before Max Biamou hit the rebound which was blocked by a back-tracking defender. Notts, however, worked up the gears and threatened through the likes of Jonathan Forte, who headed over from Jorge Grant's corner, Dan Jones lashing the ball across the face of goal, and Forte then being denied by a Lee Burge save. Coventry spurned another good chance to take the lead before the break when Tom Bayliss snuck in behind Elliott Hewitt only to drag his effort wide of the post, and it would be a miss that they would rue as the Magpies went on to open the scoring shortly after the restart. The warning signs had been there as Chris "Notts are a long ball team" Stokes cleared a Hewitt header off the line, and not long after, Jones rode a Jack Grimmer challenge before sending a low ball towards goal, which Forte deftly flicked into the back of the net to send the travelling contingent into delirium. However, Notts ended up getting screwed over when, just a few minutes from time, Tom Bayliss theatrically went down under a Matt Tootle challenge, prompting Ward to somehow award a penalty which McNulty rifled the opposite way of Collin to literally steal a goal back and leave the tie on a knife edge. Notts County hammer Yeovil Town to clinch League Two playoff place

Notts County have secured a spot in the League Two playoffs thanks to Saturday's resounding 4-1 win over Yeovil Town at Meadow Lane. In addition, victory took the Magpies to within two points of third-placed Wycombe Wanderers - who lost 3-0 at Accrington Stanley - with two games left to play. Both sides traded blows throughout the first half, Jonathan Forte riflling a shot past the post before hitting the bar with an audacious lob but Yeovil also having numerous opportunities to open the scoring. However, it was Notts that took the lead on the stroke of half time as Dan Jones let rip with an audacious long-range effort which took a deflection and wrongfooted Yeovil keeper John Maddison en route to goal. After the restart, the hosts doubled their advantage in comical fashion, Liam Noble's cross in the 54th minute being emphatically thumped into the visitors' net by Glovers defender Tom James from around 20 yards out as he attempted a clearance. Elliott Hewitt made it three on 69 minutes, cutting in from the left and bearing down on goal before firing low past Maddison. And four minutes later it was four, Lewis Alessandra latching onto Forte's ball and dribbling past two defenders before netting from close range. Although Alex Fisher netted a consolation in injury time from a free kick, the result was in no doubt whatsoever and the Black & White Army could celebrate another huge step in the team's promotion bid. Notts County came from a goal down to record a 3-1 win at Colchester United that keeps their League Two playoff hopes alive and kicking. The Magpies endured a poor first half, falling behind on nine minutes when Drey Wright exchanged passes with Ben Stevenson, slicing through the visitors' defence, before slotting low past Adam Collin from close range. In the 17th minute, Colchester came close again when Mikael Mandron picked up Ben Stevenson’s smart pass and ran at the visitors’ defence before drilling a low shot straight at Collin. Kane Vincent-Young, Wright and Mandron all weighed in with efforts against Notts, who had Jonathan Forte's goal ruled out on 25 minutes for a push by Shaun Brisley on Luke Prosser following a corner. The U's almost doubled their lead just after the break when Tom Eastman divered Mandron's header onto the foot of the post. Three minutes later, Notts dragged themselves level when Forte squeezed a low shot past Sam Walker after Shaun Brisley had done well to keep the ball alive from Tootle’s cross. Ameobi then fired the visitors into the lead with 21 minutes remaining, finishing off after Forte and Matty Virtue tested the opposition keeper. The game was then killed off with 14 minutes remaining when Richard Duffy rose to head home Dan Jones's free kick into the area. Notts County have claimed their first win in six League Two games as fellow playoff chasers Coventry City were beaten 2-1 in Saturday's game at Meadow Lane. The match began slowly, with little of note happening in the opening 20 minutes, before Notts would muster the first chance of the game as Jorge Grant rifled wide from 12 yards out. Coventry countered with Rod McDonald blasting over, while Tom Bayliss saw an effort deflected wide and McDonald then sent another shot off target. Marc McNulty and Max Biamou also had sniffs of goal, while at the other end, Jonathan Forte - proudly sponsored by Pride of Nottingham - failed to test Coventry keeper Lee Burge with a run towards goal and subsequent tame effort. The restart saw Forte test the opposition stopper once again with a powerfully struck effort, while a flashpoint occurred not long after when a coming together between Liam Noble and Coventry's Michael Doyle prompted handbags from both sets of players. Notts went on to take the lead on the hour as Grant's corner was met by Forte on the leap and headed into the far corner of the Sky Blues net. However, the final say would belong to Kevin Nolan and co as Forte converted Shola Ameobi's low cross to secure all three points for the hosts, whose promotion hopes were given a huge boost. Notts County's automatic promotion hopes have been left in tatters after succumbing to a 1-0 loss away at Accrington Stanley. Magpies boss Kevin Nolan made seven changes to his starting XI given the quick turnaround of games, with the last League Two fixture - the home draw with Wycombe Wanderers - taking place three days earlier. Notts began brightly as Carl Dickinson rifled an effort wide and Liam Walker forced a save from goalkeeper Jonny Maxted in the early exchanges. Sean McConville had the hosts' first sighting of goal, his effort deflecting just wide for a corner, and from the ensuing set piece they would take the lead. Notts County have missed out on the chance to gain ground on the top three in League Two as they were held to a goalless draw by Wycombe Wanderers in Good Friday's match at Meadow Lane. The Chairboys came to NG2 very much intent on leaving with a point and the Magpies could not break their defence down in an uninspiring, rain-sodden encounter. Terry Hawkridge was first to threaten in the game as his low drive on 15 minutes drew a save from opposition goalkeeper Scott Brown after Lewis Alessandra had played the ball into the winger's path. Although Wycombe had the better of the play, Shola Ameobi came close to an opener on 21 minutes when he met Hawkridge's cross but, from six yards out, he found the upright. At the other end, Adebayo Akinfenwa rifled over after the ball fell kindly for him inside the box, before Joe Jacobson was booked for a foul on Hawkridge and Nathan Tyson joined him due to a foul on a breaking Dan Jones. Shortly after the half-hour mark, Ameobi was brought down by Adam El-Abd in the Wycombe box but the referee played on, prompting Kevin Nolan to rightfully protest the decision, and the Notts boss was soon banished to the stands. One more chance would come County's way before the break as hesitant Wycombe defending led to Matt Tootle having a free shot at goal, but Brown was able to keep the effort out. Onto the second half and substitute Michael Harriman fired an effort over, and not long after, Nathan Tyson saw a goal ruled out for offside. Notts County delivered arguably the worst performance of the season as they were convincingly beaten 3-1 by Chesterfield in Sunday's televised League Two game at the Proact Stadium. The Spireites, in the bottom two of the Football League, were hosting a side supposedly chasing promotion at the other end of the table, but you could easily have thought the positions were reversed. Although the hosts began brightly, Notts forced a chance when a the ball was sent long into the box by keeper Adam Collin and headed goalwards by Shaun Brisley, though Aaron Ramsdale managed to tip over his bar. It took Jack Lester's side just 16 minutes to break the deadlock, with Andy Kellett's corner bundled into the back of the net through nudges from Drew Talbot and Sid Nelson, a testament to County's shambolic defending. At the other end, Elliott Hewitt spurned a great opportunity to nod Notts level, but Jon Stead's cross to his unmarked teammate was inexplicably put wide. From the restart, Chesterfield headed up the pitch and a litany of errors at the back from Notts saw Zavon Hines claim the ball 12 yards out and rifle home to knock even more stuffing out of the beleaguered visitors. The Derbyshire strugglers continued to dominate in the second half against a zombified Notts, with Hines volleying into the side netting before Alex Whitmore sent a header narrowly wide. There was still a little more fight in Notts and they dragged themselves back to within one goal through a free kick from substitute - and ex-Chesterfield man - Dan Jones, which bounced inside the far post from wide on the right. Nine minutes of stoppage time were then announced, and for a few minutes there was genuine hope that a second wind could see Notts grab an equaliser, or maybe even a Man City - QPR style comeback win. But no. The Black and White Army were soon put out of their misery when another defensive mishap saw Chesterfield burst through, Kellett brought down by Matt Tootle in the box, a penalty awarded, and Kristian Dennis smashing the ball into the back of the net with Collin diving the wrong way. A penalty awarded after the declared seven minutes of injury time saw Notts County pegged back to a 1-1 draw by Mansfield Town in Saturday's big League Two derby. A snowy Meadow Lane played host to the two Nottinghamshire rivals, both of whom are thick in the promotion shout. Notts began brightly in the poor conditions and had their first effort on six minutes as Carl Dickinson played the ball into the box where Jon Stead sent a header wide of the left post. Four minutes later, Stags goalkeeper Conrad Logan punched a ball to the edge of his area and Liam Noble was quickest to the loose ball but his attempted lob landed on the roof of the net. Mansfield took a while to get into gear but soon they were matching the Magpies on the pitch, winning several corners, and Ben Hall did well to clear a cross before Danny Rose could turn it home. Just after the half-hour mark, the Stags mustered a shot on target when Rose was played the ball on the edge of the Notts box but saw his low effort picked up by Adam Collin. From the ensuing break, Jorge Grant was able to cross for the unmarked Shola Ameobi just five yards out, but Logan made a save with his legs to send the ball behind for a corner. The set piece led to County's opener as Ameobi nodded goalwards, Logan parried the header onto the bar and when it came back out again, Terry Hawkridge was on hand to nudge the ball into the back of the net. Kevin Nolan's side went in at the break a goal up but the visitors improved after the break, with Kane Hemmings, Paul Anderson and Alex MacDonald all weighing in with efforts. Midway through the second half the handbags came out after Mal Benning had brought Jon Stead down on the flank, with MacDonald and Noble involved in a bit of afters. Both sides continued to exchange blows but the sucker punch for Notts came 30 seconds past the seventh minute of added time. MacDonald headed the ball back into the Notts area and it made contact with Lewis Alessandra's arm, prompting the referee to award a penalty which Hemmings slotted low beyond Collin from 12 yards. As the ball broke free, the referee opted to play the advantage and it proved to be the right call as Noble was on hand to seize the loose ball and tap into the empty net. The Magpies continued to launch attacks as Alessandra found the side-netting with a shot from a narrow angle and Stead curled a left-footed effort wide, but 1-0 is how it stayed at the break. Mark Cooper's side was more with it after the restart as Chris Clements forced Collin into tipping a shot around the post before Gavin Gunning nodded over the subsequent corner. Tahvon Campbell's introduction then helped Forest Green draw level as he was put through in the Magpies area and kept his composure as he fired into the roof of the net from a narrow angle. Billy Waters' shot from the edge of the box was then parried wide by Collin, before Brad Halliday surged forward on the right and forced the Notts custodian into a save with his feet. Moments before half-time Elito struck an ambitious effort from distance which went only narrowly wide, the whistle effectively putting the visitors out of their misery for 15 minutes. The restart saw more of the same as O'Neil headed over following Uche Ikpeazu's cross from the byline, but Notts began asserting themselves a little more in search of an equaliser. That would never come, however, as Cambridge continued to boss the action in search of a second goal, which looked likelier to come for then than it would have for Kevin Nolan's side. Eventually the final whistle blew on a narrow but overall comfortable win for the hosts, who claim their third win on the trot. Notts, meanwhilw, are forced to once again lick their wounds and go back to the drawing board as their hopes of promotion continue to slip from their fingers. Notts County have lost further ground in the race for the League Two automatic spots after being held to a 0-0 draw at Newport County on Saturday. The hosts began brightly as Padraig Amond fired over in the first 30 seconds Dan Butler and Robbie Willmott worked their way down the left flank. At the other end, Jon Stead was on hand to meet a Carl Dickinson delivery from the byline but the veteran's effort at the near post was wide. Joe Day was then tested on the quarter-hour mark when he pushed away Elliott Hewitt's drive from range as the contest subsequently become more of a war of attrition in midfield. There would be little goalmouth action until the latter stages of the first half, when Amond blazed over from a difficult angle and Jorge Grant bent a 25-yard free kick wide of the post. Neither side could find a breakthrough come the end of the opening 45 minutes and no changes were made when the restart came about. As with the first half, the game was a slow burner as both teams took a while to get back into the game. On 55 minutes Joss Labadie found the back of the net but the goal was disallowed for an infringement on Adam Collin. A quarter of an hour later, Notts spurned a great chance when Grant saw an effort blocked before the ball fell for Alessandra to fire goalwards from the edge of the area. Day managed to parry the effort, only for the ball to then fall into the path of Liam Noble, who fluffed his lines by blazing high and wide. Four minutes were added on at the end of the match, with Notts finishing brightly by winning a succession of corners, but ultimately the final whistle blew on a stalemate. Match Report: Notts County survive scare to beat Carlisle United

Notts County have bounced back from their horror week with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Carlisle United on Tuesday night. Jon Stead's first-half brace did the damage against the Cumbrians, who made it a nervy finish through a deflected Jamie Devitt strike after the break and an inexplicable seven minutes of injury time. The game began with both sides looking dangerous, the best chance of the first quarter of an hour coming when Matt Tootle exchanged passes with Shola Ameobi to get into the area before rifling wide of the upright. Notts managed to break the deadlock on 19 minutes when Carlisle gifted the hosts possession and Lewis Alessandra slotted the ball into the path of Stead, who took a touch and rifled an effort off goalkeeper Jack Bonham and into the net. Keith Curle's charges remained dangerous as Devitt and Kelvin Etuhu fired off target but they conceded once again through an almighty goalmouth scramble that culminated in Stead scuffing home from his own deflection. County nearly added a third when James Brown's header back towards Bonham actually sailed over the goalkeeper but Stead couldn't get to the ball in time and a corner was conceded instead. The visitors began the second half brightly and had Notts under the cosh for a period and, although Kevin Nolan's side soon grew back into the game, the third goal of the encounter went Carlisle's way in controversial circumstances. Notts skipper Richard Duffy was down with a head injury but the Cumbrians played on, substitute Ashley Nadesan playing the ball into the path of Devitt, who in turn hit a deflected finish from the edge of the area. Meadow Lane was shocked when seven minutes of injury time were announced, which gave impetus to Carlisle to try to find an equaliser, but Notts held firm for all three points which keeps them fourth in the table. Match Report: Notts County crumble in late defeat to Crawley Town

Notts County have suffered a second League Two home defeat in the space of three days as Crawley Town emerged 2-1 winners at Meadow Lane on Tuesday night. The Magpies' unbeaten league home run came to an end at the weekend as Exeter City won 2-1 and the Red Devils won by the same scoreline in a game which ended in rambunctious circumstances. Kevin Nolan's side began brightly, forcing five corners in the first ten minutes, and nearly took the lead when Matty Virtue's shot was hacked off the line by Josh Lelan. Lewis Alessandra then came just as close when Liam Noble's header came off an opposition defender and fell to the winger but his shot on the turn clipped the top of the bar on its way over. The pendulum soon swung the other way, however, and Crawley enjoyed a bright spell before taking the lead on 25 minutes. Lelan’s throw on the right was flicked on by Thomas Verheydt towards Jimmy Smith, who made the most of the space at his disposal to volley beyond Ross Fitzsimons and inside the right-hand post. Notts County have lost their superb unbeaten home record in League Two after fellow promotion chasers Exeter City claimed a 2-1 win at Meadow Lane on Saturday. Boss Kevin Nolan fielded a different-look side to their usual XI, with Richard Duffy and Matt Tootle both sidelined, and a much-changed midfield including Matty Virtue, Noor Husin and the returning Liam Noble. The Magpies fell behind after just eight minutes as a contentious free kick whipped in by Lee Holmes was met by Dean Moxey, who struck the post before the rebound was converted by Jake Taylor. Notts mustered a couple of half-chances as a Jon Stead header from Dan Jones's delivery bounced tamely to Christy Pym and Lewis Alessandra also failing to beat the Exeter keeper with a shot from the corner of the box. However, Pym was largely untroubled in the first half, while the visitors were more dangerous and doubled their lead on 42 minutes through Stockley. The Grecians top scorer latched on to a long ball forward, got the better of Shaun Brisley and found the bottom corner from the edge of the area to leave the Notts contingent reeling at the break. The second half saw Notts grow into the game, but not before several more dangerous attempts from Stockley, one denied by Elliott Hewitt's goalline clearance and the other cannoning off the woodwork. However, the deficit was halved on 73 minutes when Troy Archibald-Henville hauled substitute Shola Ameobi down in the box, prompting the referee to point to the spot. Jon Stead then subsequently despatched the penalty, sending Pym the wrong way, but despite a late flurry of attacks, they couldn't find an equaliser to prolong their unbeaten home record.
