Chris Buckley: Notts County have every chance of beating Brentford in FA Cup

So, Notts County have been drawn away to Brentford in the third round of the FA Cup.

Whilst the draw might not be all that glamourous for either side, both teams must surely be fancying their chances in progressing to the fourth round.

Personally I think the tie is quite ideal for that reason, and I would hope that we can forge some sort of run that might perhaps see us replicate what Jon Stead did at Bradford City and of course Terry Hawkridge at Lincoln City.

It perhaps would have been nice to have drawn Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur or perhaps our neighbours Nottingham Forest.

However, a tie against the Bees isn’t the worst thing for me, as I said it’s a good chance to progress and Kevin Nolan will have the bulk of the squad at his call – fingers crossed we’ll have the full squad for selection.

Yet wouldn’t it be nice for us to continue doing well in the league, along with a respectable cup run?

I actually see the competition as a way to further move the club forward, as it’s easy to dismiss the money which it can attract but it’s only ever really useful when you progress further.

And I would like to see Notts put a convincing performance, perhaps similar to that of what we did against Aston Villa in the League Cup in 2015.

Just with a more uplifting ending that perhaps might see us continue to dream and realise just how far we have come as a club.

So that said, I think I can dismiss the fact that I had hoped we might be fortunate enough to be drawn again at Meadow Lane – I do feel we may have dodged a bullet.

Would you rather see us have a decent a chance of progressing or one fairy-tale game? At least we haven’t been drawn to Mansfield.

Plus, we can go into the game hopefully being able to place egg on the faces of some Brentford fans who are already appearing to be counting their chickens!

The better team on the day will progress, and I hope it will be Notts but despite the fact we weren’t playing them fairly regularly a short time ago – it will allow us to see how we compare now.

Fingers crossed we’ll show the Bees just how high the Magpies are flying at the minute.

Yet provided the performance is good, all our players give a good account of themselves and we respect the importance of progressing further – it’s fine by me.

Both sets of fans will be thinking this game was not the best draw, but its the FA Cup.

Notts will have to earn a place in the next round for another go at the "ideal" draw. I am fairly happy about this, four pubs near to the ground and its a nice away day.

Sorry mate but your smoking some strong weed if you think we have even the slightest hope against them, our weaknesses were badly exposed by a team two leagues lower and we will get whipped by any proper footballing side, especially one well known for keeping the ball on the deck with smart intricate passing.

 

This is the reason why Alan Hardy will never attain the crowds he hopes for, whilst we might be winning games the standard of football is awful at best, Saturday we cried out for Liam Walker with his obvious quality on the ball to come on in the middle, bring the ball down and make use of the wingers and front runners but yet again we just resorted to thumping the ball into the clouds, not a single person I sat around on Saturday looks forward to watching us play with most only coming sporadically now due to the god awful nature of our tactic, yes it wins games but people want to be entertained and not feel like they are suffering from whiplash when they leave the ground.

We'll see, I can see strengths for us over them.

Plus they may be focused more on their league position, there's no doubt in my mind that they're a decent outfit but one could argue they are punching above their own weight at the moment. If we focus on disrupting their style of play, we would stand every chance in getting a good result.

I agree whole heartedly the Oxford result exposed all our weeknesses ie desperate need for a quality striker and players that can defend

Cecil, so did Coventry but we've been alright since.

We have been shouting out for a quality striker ever since we released Lee Hughes, but despite the weaker performance and there has been a fair few - we have also played quite well. I am encourage to see this 'complete' performance that Kevin Nolan has spoke about at times.

Yet it's a cup draw, any team stands a chance of winning - more so than if we was draw a bigger club.

A new centre forward isn't going to stop the defenders just humping the ball forward at every opportunity.

Whilst I understand we are league 2 and our play reflects this we have players capable of much much more and we aren't utilising the wingers we do have effectively as we are not playing to their strengths.

Oxford caused us problems mainly by cheating, by that I mean several of their players didn't follow our midfield when we went forward as they knew that we would be bypassing them, better teams will punish us big time because of this

If we defend as we did against Oxford we've had it. On the plus side, Noble will be fit and ready to go from 1st of January. So the midfield will be beefed up.

Not quite bud, I said it would be tight if you've seen much of what I've written about the tie but I honestly did feel the game was winnable. ;)
