Charlie Slater leaves Notts County commentary with heartfelt message

PON_News

Charlie Slater, the well-known commentator for BBC Radio Nottingham, has announced his departure from his role as Notts County commentator via Twitter. Charlie, who took over the role on 5th August 2017 following the semi-retirement of the legendary Colin Slater, expressed his gratitude and honour in being Notts' new commentator.

In a series of tweets, Charlie thanked his colleagues at BBC Radio Nottingham and reflected on his time with the station. He wrote, "I’ve worked for BBC RNS for over a decade & covered more than 500 games for them. None of that happens without Colin Fray, who took a chance on me & to who I’ll be eternally grateful." He also shared a text graphic in which he expressed his affection for the football club and its supporters.

Charlie went on to say, "After six years and almost 350 games I've been at a crossroads, needing to make a decision whether to carry on or to pursue other opportunities. It's the most difficult career decision I've ever had to make, made more so by the affection I have for the football club and of course the bond I have with you, the supporters."

He continued, "The way that you have taken to me will never leave me. I can't begin to express my gratitude to each and every one of you for listening and for your kind comments. A special fan base for a special football club, I hope you'll always consider me 'one of your own'."

Charlie also reflected on the future of Notts County, writing, "Watching Notts get promoted at Wembley is a good way to go out, but I also know there's more to come. With great owners, the legacy of Jason Turner, the brilliant Luke Williams and his coaching staff and the off the pitch excellence of Richard Montague, Nick Richardson and Steven Carter, to name just a few, Notts County are only going one way."

He concluded by expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to follow in Colin Slater's footsteps. "Finally, Notts County has always had 'one voice' and to be given the chance to follow Colin Slater will forever be one of the greatest honours of my professional career. I hope I did his legacy justice. Thank you for listening. You pies! Charlie"

As Notts County prepare for their first match of the 2023-24 season, Charlie's departure marks the end of an era for BBC Radio Nottingham and Notts County. His contributions to the station and to the local football community will be greatly missed. Charlie's heartfelt words on Twitter have touched many fans and colleagues alike, and his legacy as a commentator will live on.

it will be hard to hear someone connect with mark stallard in the way that charlie did, charlie and stall were great together but i do feel the commentator role needs to have someone who is always there, so i thought this would happen with us making our way back to the football league.

charlie always did his best, i wish him well.

In all these years of listening to Charlie commentate Notts County games, I’ve come to appreciate the depth of his understanding of football and his connection with the club. It's not often that one finds a narrator who has such a bond with the fans. He filled the shoes of Colin Slater remarkably well, which is no easy feat. Charlie, you may be leaving the commentator's box, but you will always be 'one of our own'!

Few things made match days special like a solid line of commentary from Charlie and Stall. His affection for the club and the fans was always evident – it went far beyond just calling the action on the pitch. Who's going to fill this void now? I wish him all the best as he looks to broaden his horizons. He leaves some big shoes to fill, but here's hoping Notts County will continue to find voices just as impassioned!

Charlie’s departure is truly disheartening, as his commentary breathed life into every game, providing an inclusive and immersive experience for those of us who couldn't be on the stands. His passion and dedication to Notts County were unquestionable and his ability to connect with us, the fans, was remarkable.

Best wishes for your future career, Charlie!

It’s sad to see the duo of Charlie and Stall come to an end, but hopefully they can bring someone in who can connect with the fans on a similar level. I think we’ve been lucky to have Charlie, after the sad loss of Uncle Colin.

It took a bit of getting used to Charlie after all the years we had with Uncle Colin. I thought Charlie continued that torch and connected well with the fans. It was nice to hear how he would speak about things ahead of games, mentioning things within the community.

It broadened that connection, and with his bond with Mark Stallard, they have made it enjoyable to listen to the commentary, especially when looking back at their celebrations. GET IN! It won’t be the same without Charlie Slater.

This was always going to happen he is very talented and has been a commentary on some much more high profile games than Notts, he is also active on local television. I will definitely miss the banter he had with Stall they obviously had a genuine friendship which came across on the radio. Good luck Charlie you will do well in whatever you move on to.

Charlie was the ‘voice’ that we associated with Notts County. His warm and engaging commentary, coupled with his palpable affection for the club, truly endeared him to the fans. It's indeed a sad day knowing he won’t be there to narrate our victories and losses, but I am certain that wherever he goes next, he’ll be a smashing success. Good luck, Charlie!

It's sad to see Charlie leave Notts County's commentary booth. His voice, full of passion and apparent love for the club, has been part of every win and loss, every joyous cheer and painful sigh. It's hard to imagine the commentary without him, it was always so apparent that he really cared about Notts.

Now that he's decided to leave to pursue other opportunities, it feels like we're losing a part of the club's spirit. But, Notts County supporters understand that such a talented person like Charlie can't be confined to a single role forever. We'll miss you, Charlie, but we all know you have a bright future ahead of you, and we can't wait to see where it leads you.

Charlie has great talent and we knew he would move on one day, but it was sad to see him go. What entertainment he gave us on air with his partner Stal..
