Stuart Maynard: Notts County Must Be Ready for Tough FA Cup Challenge Against Peterborough United

PON_News

As Notts County prepare to face Peterborough United in the second round of the FA Cup, head coach Stuart Maynard has shared his thoughts on the challenge ahead, updates on player fitness, and the magic of the competition.

The Magpies are eager to secure a place in the third-round draw, but Maynard acknowledges the difficulty of the task at The Weston Homes Stadium.

“It’s everyone’s dream, isn’t it, to dream about playing against that big club at home, one of the Premier League big boys,” Maynard said, reflecting on the excitement of the FA Cup. “That’s what the cup’s about and this is why it’s one of the greatest cup competitions in the world. Everyone wants to be involved in it.”

While Maynard embraces the romance of the competition, he remains focused on the challenge ahead, describing Peterborough as “a very good team with lots of pace that can hurt you at any given time on a counter or through possession.”

Notts County will be without several key players due to injuries, but there is positive news on the recovery front. Maynard highlighted the progress of Jodi Jones, who has been sidelined after an impressive start to the season. “He’s back on the grass running, doing different movements and stuff, and he’s come through it all with good health. There’s no reactions, which is brilliant,” he said. “It makes us smile a lot every day when we see him back out running on the grass.”

Maynard also provided updates on Curtis Edwards, Connor Grant, Scott Robertson, and Dan Crowley. “Scott Robinson is back on the grass, he’s part-trained with us and getting closer and closer now to being back involved,” he said. Regarding Crowley, Maynard explained, “We scanned his groin again, and it’s still showing a slight tear, but he’s healing nicely. He’s probably a little bit longer than Robbo, but he’s getting there as well.”

The significance of the FA Cup is not lost on Maynard, who emphasised the unique excitement of the third round. “It’s kind of like the first round to the non-league teams,” he said, referencing the allure of testing oneself against elite players. “It gives that real opportunity of going to test yourselves against the best, but you have to get there.”

Despite the removal of replays, Maynard recognises the impact this has on non-league clubs. “I think it really harms them,” he said. “When they fight that hard against a league club and get an amazing draw away, then they can bring them home and have that dream again... It can set some clubs up financially for two to three years.”

Notts County’s preparation includes practising penalties, with Maynard acknowledging the pressure that comes with stepping up in such moments. “It’s easy to go in training and practise, but to actually go up in a big game when it really, really matters, it takes a lot of strength and courage.”

Saturday’s clash will be the third meeting between the two sides this season, following their pre-season encounters. However, Maynard believes both teams have evolved since then. “We’re in totally different places to where we were in the summer,” he said. “We’re ahead in how fluent we are in the way that we play, our fitness levels and intensity levels.”

With a tough challenge ahead, Maynard remains optimistic about his team’s chances. “We want to make sure that we’re in the hat come Monday,” he said, reflecting the determination within the squad to keep their FA Cup journey alive.

Stuart needs to select a very strong side for today's match. Notts need to try to get a positive result today.

The promise of a potential draw against one of the top six PL sides in England in the third round has to be a top priority today.

its going to be a tough game but i think we should be able to give a good account of ourselves, i dont expect any of the returning players from injury to start and i hope we play a first 11 that is competitively strong. it sounds like stuart maynard wants to make it to the 3rd round, so hopefully we can just try our best to cause a cup upset.

I love the FA Cup and all the stories that come with it, but this match against Peterborough United will really test us. It’s great to hear about players like Jodi Jones making progress, we’ve missed his spark on the pitch. The update on Dan Crowley and Scott Robertson is promising too, but it sounds like it’ll take time. Stuart Maynard’s focus on preparation, especially practising penalties, shows he’s leaving no stone unturned.

It's a good game to be playing, the insight to see how we have come since the pre-season. I know those games mean little, and it's all about fitness, but it does give some indication. We have a good side, and it will be good to see how we compare against a top League One team. Peterborough United might be the favourites, but in cup games you can't underestimate anyone and I think to a certain degree the pressure will be on them being at home.

Our crowd going and making the usual noise will be of great encouragement, and I am very much looking forward to seeing how the game does unfold. I place my trust in Stuart Maynard!

Hearing Maynard talk about the FA Cup made me nostalgic for some of our classic games. It’s a special competition, and every fan dreams of drawing a Premier League giant. However, Peterborough United is a big challenge.

Their pace could be a real problem if we’re not careful. I appreciate how realistic Maynard is about our strengths and weaknesses. The updates on players like Jodi Jones are encouraging, but I hope we don’t rush anyone back too soon. Here’s hoping for a strong performance and a place in the third round!

Feeling excited about today's game! Peterborough will be wanting to please their home support and Notts can make that an advantage by controlling the midfield, staying tight and passing the ball carefully. We have a lot of positives going into the game and a good cup run would be great, but first we have to prove ourselves worthy of being in the 3rd round. Their manager has made comments about us being a good team, but already seems to think they have progressed before the game has played. We have to show them that we can't be underestimated.

The FA Cup really does bring something special, doesn’t it?

Stuart Maynard's remarks about dreaming of playing a Premier League team at home capture the excitement perfectly. Peterborough will be a challenging opponent, especially with their pace, but it’s reassuring to see how focused the team is. The updates on injuries are a boost too!

It's good to hear that players like Jodi Jones are making progress. Practising penalties is a smart move; you never know when that’ll come in handy. Fingers crossed we get a result and make it to the third round.

I would like to think we are a lot more settled in defence and can make Peterborough United work hard to get anything from the game, yes they are a good team but on cup day we are equal to them. The winners will be whoever wants it more, or who plays the best defensively. I am sure Stuart Maynard will have the team well drilled and prepared for the match. We have a good following, so I am sure that will help us get into things.

The updates on Jodi Jones and the other injured players are encouraging, but I’m glad Maynard isn’t rushing anyone back. It’s smart to focus on long-term fitness. His mention of practising penalties stood out, it shows he’s preparing for all scenarios. Notts will have to defend bravely and make sure they protect Bass to the best of their ability.

I love the detail Maynard gave in this interview. It’s clear he respects The Posh’s abilities but also believes in our progress since the summer. Knowing that the team is practising penalties and focusing on preparation shows we’re taking this seriously. The injury updates are a mixed bag, great to hear about Jodi Jones’ recovery, but it’s clear we’ll have to wait a bit longer for Crowley. Regardless, the focus has to be on playing to our strengths. I’m excited about this match, let’s hope we get a result.

Maynard’s got the team focused, and that’s what matters most. Notts just has to be prepared and concentrate on the game throughout, it will be a good test.

The FA Cup is such an exciting competition, and I like how Stuart Maynard highlights its importance. He’s absolutely right about the thrill of reaching the third round and facing a big club. That said, Peterborough are no pushovers, and this will be a real test of our squad.

It’s brilliant to hear about Jodi Jones making progress; we’ve definitely missed him. Dan Crowley’s situation sounds frustrating, but at least he’s on the mend. Practising penalties is a smart move, I wouldn’t be surprised if the game came down to that. Let’s hope the lads can give us something to cheer about.

Reading Maynard’s comments about the FA Cup reminded me why this competition is so special. It’s not just about the big wins, it’s about the dreams of going up against the best and showing what we’re capable of. Peterborough United will be a difficult test, their pace and counter-attacking ability could hurt us if we’re not careful. However, I believe in the progress we’ve made since the summer.
