Kion Etete pens Notts County professional contract on 17th birthday

Notts County have announced that teenage forward Kion Etete has signed professional terms at Meadow Lane.
The 17-year-old, who celebrated his birthday today, made his senior debut against Newcastle United’s Under 21s in October’s EFL Trophy game.
Etete has since come off the bench in away games at Port Vale, Barnsley and Morecambe and is now looking forward to playing under new boss Neal Ardley.
“Being around the first team has been a great experience for me and now I’m just going to be doing all I can to show the new manager what I can do,” Etete told the official website.
“Under 23s matches will give me the chance to prove myself against older players from a higher level and I can still play for the Under 18s, which will keep me up to speed.
“It feels quite surreal as this is just the start of my day. I’ve got my first driving lesson and a Premier League Cup fixture against Southampton coming up later!”

"The main goal is to support PON financially but I have hopes of improving the site further with custom work, so the sale of prints would help secure the sites future but also make it better."

Steve Chettle admits Notts County players gutted after point at Morecambe

Caretaker manager Steve Chettle has admitted that Notts County's players were "gutted" after being pegged back late on against Morecambe.
The Magpies took the lead early in the second half when a cross from the right was nodded beyond Mark Halstead's reach by Kristian Dennis on 52 minutes.
However, a late scramble in the box culminated in Kevin Ellison turning the ball home after a goalmouth scramble following a corner and a final result of 1-1.
“The lads are gutted and I told them that I was disappointed for them,” Chettle told the Nottingham Post. “Being that way after only getting a point is good.
“Being disappointed when you know you can do better is not acceptable and we said that after the Cheltenham game. It is a step in the right direction, but it’s still only a point.
“Cheltenham winning means we are still playing catch-up so we need to win game after game. But a point is a small step and I will take small steps until we get to the big step at the end.”

Match Report: Notts County pegged back late on at Morecambe

Not great, but much better. Notts County put in a much improved performance against Morecambe at the Globe Arena today, but they relinquished a one-goal lead late on for a 1-1 final score.
The first half was pretty dour and with little to write home about, save for a good Kristian Dennis one-on-one chance which Mark Halstead skilfully kept out.
In the second period, Morecambe stepped up and Ajay Leitch-Smith threatened, while Liam Mandeville having an effort tipped behind inside the first five minutes.
Notts went on to take the lead, however, a cross from the right being nodded beyond Halstead's reach by Kristian Dennis on 52 minutes.
Nathan Thomas almost doubled County's lead when he saw a fierce drive parried to safety by the opposition goalkeeper, while Morecambe stepped up in a bid to salvage something from the game.
And salvage something they did, when a scramble in the box culminated in Kevin Ellison turning the ball home after a goalmouth scramble following a corner.
Five minutes of injury time were played out, during which Jamie Turley was called out by the opposition players for an alleged handball, but nothing was given as the spoils ended up being shared.

Neal Ardley appointed Notts County manager

Notts County have appointed former AFC Wimbledon boss Neal Ardley as their new manager.
The 46-year-old becomes the Magpies' third manager of the season, following the sackings of Kevin Nolan in August and Harry Kewell earlier this month.
Ardley saved the Dons from relegation to the National League on the final day of the 2012-13 season before taking them into League One via the playoffs three years later.
"Having enjoyed very productive discussions with Neal and following close consultation with the board and key staff, I am very confident we have selected the right man to deliver our short and long-term targets," Hardy told the official website.
"Our biggest priority is preserving our proud status as the world's oldest Football League club and in Neal we have someone who knows what it takes to survive.
"Neither he nor I are under any illusions it's going to be easy but we are both confident of achieving this very important aim.
"Beyond that, Neal has demonstrated an ability to win promotion from League Two and sustain a club at a higher level. I hope, in time, he will be able to deliver the same for us."
Ardley, who left Wimbledon earlier this month and will be assisted by Neil Cox, added: "I would like to say a huge thank you to the chairman for giving me the opportunity to manage such a magnificent club.
"There are few clubs who could have tempted me into such a quick return to management following what was obviously an emotional departure from Wimbledon, a club I love dearly.
"But the chance to manage Notts County is one I couldn't let pass and I will come back from my break fully refreshed and determined to drive us up the table."

Declan Dunn pens Notts County contract

Teenage defender Declan Dunn has signed his first professional contract with Notts County.
The 18-year-old made his senior debut for the Magpies in the 4-0 FA Cup first round defeat away at Barnsley and has been a regular in reserve fixtures this term.
Dunn joined the Notts academy at Under-10s level and spoke proudly of the latest development in his fledgling career.
“I came in after the Barnsley match and Paul asked me to come into the office and told me I was being offered a contract,” Dunn told the club website.
“It’s a massive weight lifted off my shoulders because it’s something I’ve wanted for a long time and I’ve worked hard for it.
“I’m happy that I’ve been showing enough and now I need to keep pushing in reserve games and getting as much first team-action as I can.
“It’s a really good thing for myself and my family.
“I’ve been here for eight or nine years so I’ve seen a lot of coaches come and go but the staff and the players around me have always made me want to push hard to improve.
“I’ve played at Meadow Lane in the FA Youth Cup but not for the first team so that’s my aim for the rest of this season.”

ARLukomski: Cheltenham Town loss shows Notts County at crisis point

Notts County's season continues to lurch from crisis to crisis with arguably the worst performance of the season - if not in recent years - against Cheltenham Town at Meadow Lane on Saturday.
Following the impressive 4-2 win against Doncaster Rovers in the EFL Trophy, there was some scope for optimism as Steve Chettle took over as interim boss after Harry Kewell's sacking.
But against the struggling Robins, it was anything but, as a dour first-half performance for both sides nevertheless saw the visitors lead at the break from Luke Varney's simple goal.
The Notts defence, time and time again not fit for purpose, was at fault for all of the three goals shipped against Cheltenham, a performance that led to fans literally queuing to leave well before full time.
You've got to feel sorry for ARLukomski, still a teenager and subject to this psychological torture from watching the Magpies perform as they're doing - then again, that seems to be the fate of all us Notts fans.

Match Report: Notts County useless in three-goal loss to Cheltenham Town

Notts County fans have seen a lot of displays over the last few years that can be described as "the worst performance" they've ever seen and on Saturday there was another contender.
The day's opponents, Cheltenham Town, were hardly setting League Two alight prior to kickoff but they ended up securing a 3-0 victory against a Notts side that was frankly diabolical.
Steve Chettle had masterminded a decent 4-2 win over Doncaster Rovers in midweek and the hope was that something similar could have been conjured up against a not-particularly-good opponent.
But with Notts fans having had more false dawns than a picture book of sunrises in recent years, it was no surprise that the Magpies would find themselves trailing at the break.
Prior to the half-time whistle it wasn't a particularly exciting game - frankly it was like watching Sunday league - but as poor as the Robins were, they still ended up taking the lead in a way we've all seen before.
Ryan Broom's cross was met by the unmarked Luke Varney, who headed home the opener on 35 minutes with the Notts defence's one job - defending - clearly not done.
Ross Fitzsimons arguably emerged with credit as Chris Hussey was denied by the stopper after yet another defensive botch job.
County made a tactical switch at half-time as they changed from three at the back to 4-4-2 but things only went worse from then on as Varney claimed a second with a corner that, once again, bamboozled the Notts back line.
Tyrone Barnett eventually wrapped things up late on with a scuffed finish from close range which, not for the first time this season, led to a premature Black & White Army exodus.

Steve Chettle hoping Notts County can carry momentum into Cheltenham Town clash

Steve Chettle has called on Notts County's players to carry their momentum from their 4-2 win over Doncaster Rovers into the weekend League Two encounter against Cheltenham Town.
Wednesday night saw the Magpies produce somewhat of a shock result in the EFL Trophy as they surged into a 3-0 half-time lead against Rovers and, despite shipping two goals, they added one more for the solid win.
Chettle was pleased to see Notts get through into the second round after finishing second in Group G behind Newcastle United's reserve/youth side but was equally eager to claim a much-needed win in terms of going into league action.
“I was very pleased to get through,” he told the Nottingham Post.
“We need to win football matches, we need to get momentum and need to get into good habits and break the habit of losing games.
“Winning will hopefully kickstart us when we get to the Cheltenham game at the weekend.”

Notts County part company with Harry Kewell after just 14 games in charge

Notts County have confirmed the departure of Harry Kewell after just 14 matches in charge.
The Australia legend signed a three-year contract to replace Kevin Nolan at Meadow Lane in early September.
Despite a bright run early on in his tenure, performances and results have since slumped, and the Magpies sit 22nd in the table.
“Results have not been good enough and performance levels are a continuing concern,” chairman Alan Hardy told the club website.
“We see no reason to continue with something we don’t think can work.”
Steve Chettle will take temporary control of County’s first team, with the club hoping to announce a permanent replacement ahead of Saturday’s game with Cheltenham.
Kewell, who left Crawley to join the Magpies, departs alongside assistant manager Warren Feeney and first-team analyst Paul Murphy.

Harry Kewell opens up on Kristian Dennis struggles at Notts County

Notts County boss Harry Kewell has claimed that Kristian Dennis is "100 percent capable" of reaching double figures and most likely just needs to up his match fitness.
The Magpies forward has been drafted into the starting XI following injuries to Jon Stead and Kane Hemmings, but has found the going tough against Port Vale and Oldham Athletic.
“I do have sympathy with him,” Kewell told the Nottingham Post. “But he is a fantastic player and he knows the role.
“He’s come up against three centre-backs or two, but he knows what he’s got to do.
“He’s probably just missing that little bit of match fitness. If he can get that, then fantastic. We’ve just got to keep going, keep giving him confidence and keep giving him chances.
“He’s a great player and a great lad. He wants to score goals so let’s see if we can deliver that to him.
“He is 100 percent capable of [reaching double figures], but I suppose we are all shy of a little bit of confidence.”

ARLukomski: Barnsley loss shows Notts County are on borrowed time

Notts County's season continues to lurch from one crisis to another as the Magpies were humbled in a 4-0 loss at Barnsley in the first round of the FA Cup.
Harry Kewell's side wasn't bad in the first half, hanging on to their clean sheet until the break.
In the second minute they even got the ball into the back of the net, only for Rob Milsom's free kick to be chalked off for offside.
However, it all went pear-shaped after the restart as Cauley Woodrow opened the scoring for the Tykes.

Match Report: Notts County humbled in FA Cup by rampant Barnsley

Another weekend, another completely dispiriting Notts County performance that leaves you feeling deflated.
Although the Magpies were not expected to win against Barnsley - a team currently sitting fourth in the League One table - in the FA Cup, they were at least expected to put up a fight.
And to a degree they did, as they hung on to their clean sheet until the break, and in the second minute they even got the ball into the back of the net, only for Rob Milsom's free kick to be chalked off for offside.
But the Tykes did begin getting into their stride during the first half and, shortly after the restart, they managed to break the deadlock.
On 48 minutes, Fulham loanee Cauley Woodrow latched onto Cameron McGeehan's through ball - Elliott Ward effectively helped the ball on its way - and volleyed home after getting beyond Jamie Turley.
It was 2-0 five minutes later in the 53rd minute when the hosts efficiently switched the ball from left to right and a low cross from Brad Potts was slotted home from inside the area by full-back Zeki Fryers.
Brad Potts went close to converting Kieffer Moore's low cross in a let-off for Notts before the pair combined again and this time the former tapped home from inside the six-yard area for game, set and match.
By this point the Black and White Army had all but given up hope of even forcing a replay and the final nail in the coffin came on 81 minutes as Moore added a fourth, nodding home a left-wing cross from two yards out.
But hey, at least we can concentrate on the league, right?!

Harry Kewell: 'Jon Stead, Kane Hemmings likely to miss out in FA Cup Barnsley trip'

Harry Kewell has revealed that Jon Stead and Kane Hemmings are unlikely to play a part in Saturday's FA Cup game at Barnsley.
Stead has a leg injury which has caused him to miss the last two games, while Hemmings picked up a hamstring problem which forced him to sit out Tuesday’s goalless draw against Oldham Athletic.
“They are going well and their fitness is good,” Kewell told the Nottingham Post on Friday.
“Their injuries are getting better but unfortunately I don’t think they are going to be right for this game.
“We will take it to the wire to see if they have a chance, but we feel like they will not take part in the game.
“It’s a big loss because they are good players, but I am confident about the players who have come in for them.
“For me, it’s an opportunity for others to show their worth and try to give me a problem.”

For Club and Country: Southwell City FC, 1914-18

Sam, Tom, George, William - some familiar names now as then, the boys that made up Southwell City Football Club in 1911.
The team photo below was to mark their win in the final of the Newark and District League Challenge Cup.
None of them could have foreseen the events to follow, four years of what became to be known as the Great War that would leave 16 million dead across the globe.
A postmaster’s son, a baker, a lace maker, a solicitor’s clerk, a professional soldier and a silk worker from Maythorne - a century on it is known that, of those who served in the First World War, almost half would be dead before the end of the conflict.
Some families would lose more than one son. Sam and Arthur Humberstone both played for the team and worked at Carey & Sons lace factory. Sam lived on Westgate with his wife and two young sons.
Like most of the team the brother enlisted with the 1/8th Sherwood Foresters and would leave Southwell with the Battalion in August 1914. Both were promoted to Corporal whist in France.
Sam was killed in action in June 1915, his younger brother Arthur two years later.
Several other members of the team worked at Carey & Sons and are remembered on the Memorial at the bottom of the Burgage, the former site of this factory.
These included Herbert Kirk, the team’s striker of Burgage Lane, and Edwin Gilbert, both killed in action in France in the third year of the war.
The Gilbert family would also suffer the loss of Edwin’s younger brother Jack who, having survived 4 years on the battlefields of France, died of his wounds just a week before the end of the war in November 1918.
The team’s goalkeeper John Watson, formally of Sheppards Row and employee of the Southwell Co-op store, would also be killed in action and is buried in France along with many of his comrades.

Whilst we tend to remember those who died, we should not forget those of the team who returned home many wounded and suffering from the effects of war.
Oscar Longmore, who lived at the Post Office on Queen Street, Southwell was shot and wounded in September 1916 and after recovering at home was posted back to France in early 1917. He survived the war having spent several months as a prisoner of war in Germany.
Richard Revill also survived the war returning to his home on Chatham Street in Southwell after being wounded in August 1915.
All who returned had to deal with tragedy and loss perhaps none more so than Alfred Townsend. He survived but returned home to what must have been a very different world.
He and his siblings had lost both their parents by 1910 and, at the time of the Census in 1911, Alfred was living with the Hazelwood family on Private Road Southwell whilst his siblings were boarding with other families across the town.
Whilst Alfred survived the war it claimed the lives of both of his younger brothers, Walter and Robert and also Arthur the only son of the Hazelwood family.
In this, the centenary year of World War One, we remember them all.

Harry Kewell happy with how Notts County are progressing

Harry Kewell has claimed that Notts County need more time to click to his methods but insists he is "happy with the way the team is going".
The Magpies are back in a poor run of form following the bright spell just before the international break, but on the plus side they are unbeaten in their last two.
That said, Port Vale really should have been beaten last weekend, while a lacklustre Oldham Athletic threatened to take all three points at Meadow Lane in midweek.
“I am happy with the way the team is going,” Kewell told the Nottingham Post in his pre-match presser ahead of the FA Cup trip to Barnsley.
“We just need to take some care with our passes. We maybe need to play that little bit quicker instead of inviting challenges.
“We get into some good positions but take three or four touches when it should be one and two then a pass.
“It just allows the opposition to get a little bit closer to make a challenge and then we make a mistake.
“It’s just practice and the great thing about this squad is they love the challenges I throw at them. I put them under pressure but again it just takes time.”

ARLukomski: Solihull Moors, Notts County are coming for you

Notts County stunk out the whole of Meadow Lane on Tuesday with a dour performance against fellow League Two strugglers Oldham Athletic which was lucky to yield a point in a 0-0 draw.
The visitors, who themselves are hardly impressing at the minute, weighed in with 19 efforts against Notts, six of which were on target, won nine corners and were overall dominant in the game.
Indeed, County had Ross Fitzsimons to thank for keeping the Latics at bay, while Jamie Turley once again bailed his side out with a goalline clearance and a superb tackle on Ishmael Miller.
At the end, the hosts could very well have clinched all three points at the death when Enzio Boldewijn hit the foot of the post, but in the end the result was a stalemate which does little for both sides.

Notts County once again failed to impress on the pitch as they could only play out a 0-0 draw against fellow League Two strugglers Oldham Athletic at Meadow Lane on Tuesday night.
Sure, Harry Kewell's side claimed their first clean sheet in a month and now have two points from their last two games.
But really, they should have beaten Port Vale at the weekend and they were truly lacklustre against the Latics, another side they should have put away.
As it turned out, Oldham let rip with 19 efforts against Notts, six of which were on target, won nine corners and were generally dominant in the game.

Harry Kewell previews Oldham Athletic clash and discusses Jon Stead fitness

Harry Kewell has admitted that Oldham Athletic's forward line will be a "challenge" for Notts County's defence.
The two sides meet up on Tuesday night in a League Two game rescheduled due to international commitments on the Latics' part.
In his press conference, Kewell also spoke about individual players such as Richard Duffy, Jon Stead and Ben Hall.
“It’s going to be a challenge for my back four,” the Australian told the official Notts site.
“They have two big, aggressive strikers and tricky wingers who cross the ball well but aren’t scared to cut inside for a shot at goal.
“They aren’t in the best form but they’re strong in a 4-4-2 or a 4-2-3-1 so it’s important we win the midfield battle and create - and take - chances.”
On the players, Kewell said: “Duffy is a player with great experience and he’s a big character at this club so it’s great to have him in contention again.
“We have to be patient with him so we can't rush him back, and the same goes for Steady who missed Saturday’s match as a precautionary measure.
“Jon faces a fitness test ahead of Oldham so we’ll wait and see if he’s available, while we should have Ben Hall back in training next week which is excellent news.”
