League Two strugglers York City edge past Notts County

Joe Jones

Struggling York City have secured a 2-1 against Notts County in today's League Two match at Bootham Crescent.

The Magpies, buoyed from having won both away games under new manager Jamie Fullarton and with new man Jason Banton in their starting XI ahead of the game, started brightly and notched up eight corners in the first 20 minutes alone.

York, however, struck unexpectedly midway through the first half when Michael Coulson caught Roy Carroll off his line and struck a ball goalwards which looped over the stranded Notts keeper and into the net.

Fullarton's charges set about trying to get back into the game and forced another corner as the Minstermen continued being under the cosh, but the hosts grew with confidence and struck again seven minutes before the break, a well-worked move finished off by Bradley Fewster from three yards out.

The second half began in a sloppy manner, with York winning their first corner of the game 48 minutes in, but Jon Stead came close two minutes later with a turn and shot on the edge of the box that whistled past the far post.

Notts laboured against their opponents without really making any breakthrough, but just after the hour they were given a lifeline when, under pressure from Stead, Lubo Satka looped a header over Scott Flinders and into the Minstermen net.

The hosts, however, were able to weather the storm without too much difficulty, despite Notts’s continued accruing of corners, and so the full time whistle saw York clinch all three points.

Bound to lose at some stage but this is disappointing. Bottom of the table and takes a 2-0 lead? Having struggled to score in previous games. Who said Notts had sorted the defence out!!

Good luck to them if it does Liam.
