Slater - "Cooper has been given an unspecified points target, and if he reaches that, he'll be given a deal for longer term"

Oh God, who's setting these targets? Ray 'playoffs' Trew?

Mark Cooper has been appointed the new manager of Notts County.

The Post understands he has been given the job until the end of the season.

Cooper will succeed Jamie Fullarton, who was sacked from his post after Saturday's defeat against Exeter City.

It is Cooper's first job since he was sacked by Swindon last October just months after he had led the club to the League One play-off final.

He had been linked with a job at Stevenage but was understood to be keeping his options open as to his next destination.

Cooper was credited with turning Swindon into a dominant force in League One and also made the club more than £5m from his signings.

He worked with one of the lowest budgets in League One, but despite his achievements at the County Ground he was sacked by chariman Lee Power.

Cooper has also managed Peterborough United and Kettering, where he rose to prominence by leading them to the Conference North title and to the fourth round of the FA Cup in 2009.

It is understood he will be unveiled as Notts manager officially on Monday morning.

by Notts Media Team

Notts County have appointed Mark Cooper as the club’s new Manager on an incentivised deal until the end of the season.

Following the departure of Jamie Fullarton after Saturday’s 4-1 defeat at home to Exeter City in Sky Bet League 2, Notts owner Ray Trew has moved swiftly to bring in Cooper to oversee matters until the end of the current campaign.

However, as part of the deal, it has been agreed that, should the new Manager reach an agreed points total, it would trigger a permanent contract for Cooper at Meadow Lane.

Announcing the deal, Mr Trew explained: “I said on Saturday that what we need now, as a club, is stability, as we look to resolve the change of ownership and that is why I have turned to Mark to bring his experience and knowledge to the club to help turn things around on the pitch.

“To be fair to Mark and to reward him, should he manage to get things moving in the right direction, I have agreed a points total with him, which will remain confidential, at which point his deal will become permanent,” he added.

“I think what we all want is for Notts to be successful and if Mark can bring that then it is only right that he is given the role full-time, which I think any new owner would agree with.

“The challenge has been set and I look forward to seeing what he can bring to the role.”

Well done Mr Trew.......there will be some that might disagree with MC, ignore them.

Proper manager with success at this level.......time for all fans to bury the hatchet and support the club.

Key for me is that when he has had time at a club, he gets a win % of above 40%. Happy enough with that.

Attacking coach and he has an attacking squad there, excited to see his first line-up. COYP

Even with the poor start to his managerial career at Tamworth............his career average is 1.5 points per game.....or 70 points a season!!

This guy is a footballing God compared to JF.......how the hell did JF get the nod last time?

I remember posting at the time of JFs appointment that the only possible thing that made sense....was a tie-in with Fawaz/DF...and the Forest Youth team ie they were going to loan us their budding talent with their previous coach as our new manager......nothing else made any sense to me.

Well finally some good news for us to smile about! He's only been appointed two months too late, and had we got him in the first time we had the chance I bet we'd still have a shot at promotion, but hey we can't dwell on that now. Mark Cooper's Swindon side were the best team I watched last season,  joy to watch. The fans will get behind him straight away. Let's try and end this major dissapointment of a season on a bit of a high at least.

As far as Fullarton's sacking is concerned, nobody was surprised, and I have no sympathy for him unlike some. He made his own life even harder by alienating fans from day 1 and just generally coming across really poorly. It's quite remarkable how much damage one man did in two months in the job. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

It's a start. The first step on the road to redemption

I don't think we'll see anymore of the 8-0-2 formation....

Managerial career

At the start of the 2003–04 season Mark was appointed player/assistant manager at Tamworth and moved up to manager following the departure of Darron Gee for the 2004–05 season.[2]

During his time as Tamworth manager, Cooper managed to get them into the third round of the FA Cup in two consecutive seasons. The first time they played against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium and they managed to force a replay at their own ground, where the game was decided on penalties. The following season they played against Norwich City and lost 4–1.

Tamworth's league form did not match their cup exploits, however. In the 2005–06 season Tamworth finished second-bottom of the Conference, and only survived when Canvey Island resigned from the league. The following season went little better, and on 24 January 2007, he left Tamworth by mutual consent, with the club bottom of the Conference table.[3]

On 16 May 2007, Cooper was appointed manager of Kettering Town.[4] He had a successful first season with the Poppies, winning the Conference North title with a margin of 17 points. In the 2008–09 season, he guided Kettering to the FA Cup fourth round, a joint record for the furthest the club have been in the competition, where they faced Premier League team Fulham. He also guided the Poppies to eight place in the Conference National, completing a successful return to that division.

After days of speculation, on 13 November 2009, Cooper agreed in principle to a three-and-a-half-year contract to become Darren Ferguson's successor as manager of Championship side Peterborough United.[5] He was appointed as manager the following day.[6] He left Kettering second in the table and on a twelve-game unbeaten run. The Poppies were also in the Second Round of the FA Cup, and had been handed a dream tie against Leeds United. Cooper managed his last game as a Poppy away at Cambridge United where his side won 2–0, Cooper was applauded off the pitch by the Kettering Town faithful and had tears running down his cheeks.

On 25 November, he made his first signing as Peterborough manager, signing Exodus Geohaghon from former club Kettering Town. On 19 December, Peterborough won their first game with Cooper in charge, a 2–1 home win against Watford. Later that month, they recovered from a 0–4 home deficit to Cardiff City to claim a 4–4 draw. Cooper was sacked just 13 games into his tenure as The Posh manager on 1 February 2010 with only 1 win in those 13 games.[7]

Cooper was named Darlington manager on 29 June 2010, where he signed a two-year contract.[8] Chairman Raj Singh turned down official approaches from Lincoln City and York City for Cooper in October.[9] Cooper's first season with Darlington in 2010–11 was deemed a success. After a rocky start to the season the team recovered, going on a run of only one defeat in 20 league and cup matches from January 2011, eventually finishing in a creditable league position of 7th. Darlington under Cooper's guidance also reached the second round of the FA Cup, and beat Mansfield Town 1–0 at Wembley to win 2011 FA Trophy Final. Following what the chairman described as "recent results ... closer to relegation form than promotion form", Cooper was dismissed as Darlington manager on 24 October 2011.[10]

On 4 January 2012, Cooper was appointed caretaker manager of Kettering Town,[11] but withdrew from the role after only one match citing the club's off-field issues.[12]

Cooper was appointed manager at AFC Telford United on 31 January 2013 after Andy Sinton was sacked.[13] After just five games in charge – one draw and four defeats – he was appointed assistant to new Swindon Town manager Kevin MacDonald.[14]

On 20 August 2013 Mark Cooper was appointed manager of Swindon Town, after taking over as assistant manager from when MacDonald resigned on 13 July 2013.

On 17 October 2015, following a 2–0 defeat to Millwall, it was announced that Mark Cooper had parted company with Swindon Town.[15]

On 20th March 2016, he was appointed as manager of Notts County.

The first day of Spring and a new start for Notts...COYP!

I am literally buzzing with excitement.....I just hope the points target that Ray has given him isn't too onerous, we have some tough games coming up for a "new boy"

Maybe 10 points.....anything over that would be awesome

I think in the current situation 10 points it is, maybe 12. IE safety in a normal season if York and the Daggers weren't so poor.

I bought a ticket on Saturday before the game, for the Mansfield match. To support Notts in the local derby, rather than any expectation for a win. Now I am more confident.

I think given the current situation 10 points would be fair, we need to be looking at sides like Barnet, Newport, Hartlepool and Stevenage as teams we can pick up the points from, but as long as we are safe I don't think it really matters who we take points off, Cooper really should have been appointed instead of JF but better late than never
