Going into the tournament I myself felt very optimistic and whilst the majority seemed to believe we shouldn't expect anything - I reflected on our team and the potential we have as an attacking outlet, as prior years we have been quite defensive despite being blessed with world class offensive players (all of which could score).

For me, I can compare Russia to Slovakia and I'm seeing a pattern with how we play against the 'gritty' teams.

Now whilst the media was banging on about us fearing 'Wales' and even the likes of TalkSport ranting about us ending up with either Italy or Spain in the final 16 (yes, they mentioned this very frequently) - England have played better, performed well and got a result in the only match we have been written off in.

Now something tells me we have a set of players who like having the 'underdog' tag applied, or when there's a requirement of pride - that is enough for us to get a result.

I'm wary of the fact we seem to struggle to score but optimistic about the next round, the pressure will either take this set of players to the next level and provide that surge required to go on and win games - or they'll struggle as we have seen but it's not looking gloomy.

I'm annoyed that if Roy had actually played his best side and beaten Slovakia, we would now be looking at aΒ golden opportunity to get to the final! Belgium (definitely), CroatiaΒ and Portugal (less so) must be laughing at the prospect that there are non of the traditional big guns in their side of the draw, whilst England now have the root of having to beat France (most likely) and one of Italy, Germany, or Spain in order to get there.

I think that Roy may well have chucked his chances of getting a new contract down the drain.

I'm not sure it would have made a difference @Fozzy, our chances dried up even afterΒ Rooney, Kane and Alli had been introduced. I'm massively frustrated that we didn'tΒ beat at least one of Slovakia and Russia mind, we certainly deserved to. In a way Wales probably had it easier, as the other two teams in the group approached their match with Wales differently and left more space for Bale & co. to exploit.

I'm not fussed about who we play in the quarter finals, at that stage in a major tournament you can expect to meet someone decent. We might do better against an opponent willing to play a bit. But if we don't break Iceland down this is all moot anyway.

Personally I was disappointed that Turkey were knocked out (3 minutes from time!), but you'd need a heart of stone to begrudge those Irish fans theirΒ taste of glory.

Good grief. Is anyone else watching Croatia v Portugal and trying to stay awake?

I probably should have watched it instead of tuning into TalkSport.

So it's France v Portugal in the final. I'm hearing a lot of talk about how dominant Germany were and how they should have taken their chances, but when you concede an unnecessary penalty for the second match running by throwing your arms in the air, coupled with the omnishambles for the second goal, you really can't complain. Good luck to France in the final!

I have a horrible feeling that Portugal may win, and that Ronaldo will be the player to seal the game.

Portugal haven't deserved to make it this far, I don't think they should have gotten out of the group but they have and the final is all set. Germany failed to turn up against France, they played vastly disappointing and France also only shine in spells. This said, the final should be lively but I do feel it will result in heartbreak for the host nation.
