I am born & bred where I live now, although I have picked up a few words and pronunciations from my parents that a few have noticed.

On the topic of local language though we have quite a few local descriptive terms that have over the last 5 years made there way onto television etc, this is most probably due to the influx of Londoners into my area, at first though it was quite funny as they were being used in the completely the wrong context.

I had a big problem in New Zealand and Australia with my accent not being understood. More so New Zealand.

It doesn't help that my name is Ben, and they pronounce it 'Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaan', and would never understand when I said Ben. I just reverted to Benjamin to save confusion.

Thanks for digging up this thread, a great read! A lot of my relatives are from near Barnsley and I recognised a lot of the Derbyshire words from there. But even among ourselves I hear words like britchers, tabs and snap less and less often. Maybe it's the influence of TV?

Most people here don't like talking to me in English as they struggle to understand me ...
