Former Notts County defender Haydn Hollis has warned his Forest Green Rovers teammates not to switch off for a second in Saturday's League Two clash at the New Lawn as the Magpies "always score late goals". The 25-year-old came through the ranks at Meadow Lane and made upwards of 100 appearances for Notts between 2011 and 2018, but was moved on by Kevin Nolan in January as he linked up with former boss Mark Cooper in Nailsworth. Hollis was an unused substitute in the reverse fixture back in October as Notts fought back from a goal down to claim a last-gasp 1-1 draw thanks to Rob Milsom's 96th-minute leveller. "I was on the bench that day and I thought Forest Green were probably one of the best teams I'd seen at Meadow Lane this season,” he told the official FGR website. "From what I saw before to what I see now, we look a lot more solid and organised. We've brought players in that are a little bit different to what was here before. "I think we can get something out of the game. I think we've proven that playing Coventry, Crawley, teams that are up and around them and we've been better than them. "That comes down to us executing the job the manager puts out there so as players we can take a little bit of credit for that but the manager as well put a great game plan together against Crawley. "[Notts] always score late goals. They've got a good set of lads there and a good self-belief. If you look back, they score lots of late goals and keep going and are mentally very good. "Their strike force probably has 200 Premier league games each, they are very experienced and know how to play the game." Head to head Notts County and Forest Green Rovers have met just twice in competitive action and the Green Devils have not beaten the Magpies yet. The first game came in the third round of the FA Cup on 19 January 2010, and it ended in a 2-1 win for the Magpies at Meadow Lane. This season is the first that both teams share the same league, and the reverse fixture - also at the Lane - ended 1-1 with Rob Milsom scoring an injury-time leveller. Saturday's game marks the first time that the Magpies head to FGR's home, the New Lawn Stadium. In 1982, Rovers achieved fame at Wembley winning the FA Vase 3-1 and at the same time winning the Hellenic League and moving into the Southern League Midland Division. Seven years later a struggling Rovers outfit was renamed Stroud FC but this alienated a lot of people connected with the club, until the arrival of Trevor Horsley in 1992 saw the name changed back to Forest Green Rovers. After finishing eighth in the Southern Division under Frank Gregan in 1995–96, they won the division the following season, earning promotion to the Premier Division of the Southern League. The 1997–98 season then saw FGR them win the Southern League Premier Division, securing a second successive promotion and entry to the Football Conference. FGR finished in the relegation zone in 2005 and 2010, but both times were handed a reprieve when Northwich Victoria and then Salisbury City were demoted for non-footballing reasons. The club was then taken over by Ecotricity owner Dale Vince, at which point the team improved until finally sealing promotion into the Football League last season. Alan Hardy has revealed that he is looking into the possibility of building a hotel or apartment block next to Meadow Lane. The Notts County chairman has identified wasteland next to the Kop end as a potential spot upon which to build property and in turn reinvest in the club. One potential source of inspiration is the apartment block next to Leyton Orient’s Matchroom Stadium, where residents have a balcony with a view overlooking the pitch. Another option which has been mentioned is that of redeveloping the entire Kop stand to incorporate flats or hotel rooms - any plans would need to be submitted to Nottingham City Council before any work could happen. “We’re talking about how best to leverage that area, whether it’s a hotel, residential or retail, and working with some architects on a masterplan," Hardy told the Nottingham Post. “We’ll use that money to help fund a new training ground complex, which we’re in negotiations about at the moment. “We’re talking to a couple of hotel chains and seeing what could be possible. Terry Hawkridge has admitted that he would not accept a League Two playoff spot now were he offered it and would rather go all out for automatic promotion. Notts County were in the top three of the division for a large chunk of the season and, even though they slipped out, they sit third going into Saturday's game at Forest Green Rovers. There are 10 games left for the Magpies to re-cement their position in the top three and Hawkridge is eager for his side to come out on top in the games against several of their fellow promotion chasers. “If you offered me a playoff spot now I wouldn’t take it,” he told the Nottingham Post. “The lads were saying that we have worked so hard this year, we don’t want to let it slip at the last hurdle. “We all still think we can get in there (top three) as it’s still very tight. We’ve got to keep winning and hope that other teams fall away I guess. “We’ve got Wycombe, Mansfield, Accrington and Luton all to come which are big games. But it is the likes of Forest Green away that are just as important. “It’s so tight and that’s the good thing. Kevin Nolan has expressed his displeasure with the number of key refereeing decisions that have gone against Notts County this season. The Magpies boss was angry after Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at Cheltenham Town when Jon Stead was clearly brought down by goalkeeper Scott Flinders but not awarded a penalty. Kevin Nolan has stressed that Notts County must respect a Forest Green Rovers side who can "beat anyone on their day" ahead of their League Two encounter this weekend. Legendary Notts County goalkeeper Steve Cherry has announced that he is currently in the process of writing his autobiography and has asked fans to send in pictures of him in action on the pitch. The 57-year-old, who played for the Magpies between 1988 and 1995, made more than 500 professional appearances during an illustrious career which spanned four decades. Cherry was part of the Notts team which rose from the Third Division to the First in just three years and starred in both successful playoffs to get there, as well as the superb FA Cup win over Manchester City. Speaking exclusively to Pride of Nottingham, Cherry confirmed that the title of the book will be Cherry Picking: Life between the Sticks. Cherry, who will be writing the book alongside writer Jonathan Nicholas, said: "I've had my thoughts on writing a book for years. "I've had ups and down and travelled the world - too many memories not to share. There are things in my career that people don't know about and might shock a few!" Notts County boss Kevin Nolan has hailed Michael O'Connor's attitude in his rehabilitation and comeback from a serious knee injury. The club captain needed surgery to repair his cruciate ligament and his meniscus following a blow suffered in last April's 3-1 defeat to Portsmouth at Meadow Lane. Alan Hardy has revealed that Notts County will subsidise coach travel for the club's fans making the trip to watch the game at Chesterfield later this month. The Magpies owner says it is a way of “showing our gratitude for those who follow us up and down the land”, with official club travel being priced at £5 for the match on Sunday, March 25. Kevin Nolan has rubbished suggestions of the wheels having fallen off Notts County's League Two promotion campaign and stressed that they are in a very good place at the minute. Just 12 points separate second-placed Accrington Stanley and 10th-placed Lincoln City and, with 10-12 games left of the season depending on the team, the stage is set for a gripping promotion race. “There will be a lot of expectation and you just hope that does not transmit itself onto the pitch,” he told the Nottingham Post. “You don’t want people getting anxious because you can sense it in your players then too. “You don’t want them to go in their shell and we’ve already had a bit of that this season because of the success we have had. “I am hoping we have learned from that. But I’ve said to the players that we’ve had a fantastic season regardless because nobody expected us to be here. “Nobody thought we’d be where we are in July or August, not in September and even October. “It was only in November when everybody started saying ‘you are going to be allright’. “In December everybody said we were spot on for promotion and that we should go up, and January it was the same. “In February though, all of a sudden people believe the wheels have come off. “That goes to show how much it changes on a month-to-month basis. But why should we worry now? We’ve got to embrace it and enjoy it. “Everybody else up there and around us are expected to be there because they are teams who have built to have success this season. “We haven’t. We are building to get there. Former Cheltenham Town captain John Finnigan has made the astonishing claim that Notts County youth players would eat pieces of paper with their Nottingham Forest counterparts' names on them. The 41-year-old made the claim in a column for Gloucestershire Live ahead of Tuesday night's rescheduled League Two clash between the Magpies and Cheltenham Town at Whaddon Road. Jorge Grant has claimed that his season at Notts County has gone better than expected and insists he is close to reaching his individual targets. The Magpies midfielder, on loan from Nottingham Forest, scored his 18th goal of the season last weekend as he came off the bench to help inspire a 2-0 win over Stevenage. Grant scored 16 goals before Christmas but then experienced a barren run in front of goal which now seems to have been put to bed, but he still feels he can improve. “It (the season) has gone better than I expected,” Grant told the Nottingham Post. “I set myself targets and I’ve nearly reached both of them in terms of goals and assists. “That’s a good thing when you set targets high and hit them. “I still think I can improve. I’ve been inconsistent recently, but before that I was happy with my performances and they were up there most week. “When the goals aren’t coming people think you have not played well, but I’ve had the odd game where I’ve played well and not scored. “I’ve developed here massively. Kevin Nolan has claimed that Matty Virtue should return to Notts County “full of confidence” after scoring for Liverpool Under-23s and believes the Reds youth captain will make successful contributions for his loan club. Virtue bagged the first goal for Neil Critchley’s team which lost 2-1 to Porto B in the Premier League International Cup last Wednesday. The 20-year-old, who is eligible to play games for his parent club's youth side despite being on loan, is now back at Meadow Lane. He will be in contention for a place in the squad which faces Cheltenham in League Two on Tuesday night. “It’s perfect and we had the same scenario with Tahvon Campbell last season in which he could also play for West Brom’s under-23s team while on loan for us,” Nolan told the Nottingham Post. “We are hoping to build a good rapport with Liverpool so we are not going to stop him when he has a fantastic game to play in especially when he has not had 90 minutes with us. He will get minutes in his legs and we are always going to encourage that. “Matty will be back with us and he scored a good goal. A lot of my mates are Liverpool fans and he took his goal very nicely. He will come back full of confidence and hopefully we can keep adding to that. “People just expected Matty to come in because he was a Liverpool player and take the mantle left by Ryan Yates. It didn’t help that we weren’t going through a great patch at the time. “Had we been winning games then it would have been seen as seamless. Born in Sheffield on 12 February 1962, Phil Turner began his career at Lincoln City, making his first-team debut for the Imps in 1979. A combative central midfielder, Turner won promotion to the Third Division in 1981 under Colin Murphy, and formed midfield partnerships with Glenn Cockerill and then Neil Redfearn during his time at the club. In May 1985, Turner was in the Lincoln team that faced Bradford City in a Third Division clash at Valley Parade and witnessed the horrendous events of the stadium fire which tragically claimed 56 lives. In 1986, his spell at Sincil Bank would come to an end as he joined Grimsby Town, for whom he would make 62 appearances, but he left in 1988 for Leicester City, and then only spent one season at Filbert Street. Turner's subsequent move was the one that would yield the most glory as, in March 1989, he moved up the East Midlands to Notts County in a £125,000 deal which also saw Gary Mills move the other way. The then 26-year-old hit the ground running as he made 16 appearances for the Magpies as they finished ninth in Division Three under Neil Warnock, who had taken over earlier in the year. It wouldn't be long before Warnock gave Turner the captain's armband and, under his leadership, Notts would embark on a magical rise up the leagues. In 1989-90, Turner made 47 appearances as the Magpies finished third in the table and subsequently navigated the playoffs, captaining the side in their Wembley final win over Tranmere Rovers, and Turner was awarded Player of the Season for his contributions. And the heroics from both player and club continued the following season as Notts cruised to a fourth-placed finish in Division Two and subsequently did it again in the playoffs, beating Brighton & Hove Albion in the final to reach the hallowed top flight - Turner did his bit with the opening goal in the semi-final first leg against Middlesbrough. Turner had two more Wembley captaincies in him as he twice skippered Notts in two consecutive Anglo-Italian Cup finals, and by the time he departed Meadow Lane in 1996, he had made 284 appearances for the Magpies, scoring 29 goals, and was POTY once again, in 1994. County was the last club that Turner turned out for, subsequently taking on the job of assistant manager at Grantham Town, and according to The League Paper, he also worked in community care in Derbyshire. Notts County have been linked with a move for former Spain and Sevilla winger Diego Capel. Alan Hardy had previously spoken about having pursued an unnamed Spanish player, but added that the move fell through due to wages and the player picked a switch to an Italian club. Notts County attacker Jorge Grant has hit out at the fans who have criticised his performances in recent weeks and insists that he thrives on pressure in terms of performances and scoring goals. The 23-year-old came off the bench against Stevenage last week to net the opening goal in what ended as a 2-0 win. The goal was his first since his all-important equaliser at Lincoln City in mid-January, a long wait for his 18th of the season, and he celebrated by putting his fingers in his ears. “I was just blocking out the haters with the celebrations,” Grant told the Nottingham Post. “Me and the missus were watching some Vines and there was a lad who put spoons on his eyes to show that he wasn’t paying them attention. This was my way of just saying I am just getting on with the job in hand. “Sometimes what people says does affect you. When you are not doing well and you know you’re not doing well, then when people tell you, that’s when it does affect you a bit more. “I just try to get on with it, but it’s hard when your mate says ‘have you seen this?’. Some of the comments are quite funny actually so I do laugh. “But there are some when you think 'I’ve got to prove him wrong or him wrong'. That’s life I think. Everybody doubts you in a way, so you’ve just got to go out there and prove it.” “I think with the start I had everybody expects me to score goals. From a winger’s perspective, it’s not often they score as many as I have already this season. In that way it’s very pleasing, but I like pressure. “I want people to be on at me and wanting me to do things more and more. I'd rather it be that way than people say 'he’s not scored that many, so it’s okay’.
