Luke Williams on Notts County’s Win: ‘Energy and Aggression Were Back’

PON_News

Notts County celebrated a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Crawley Town at Meadow Lane, with head coach Luke Williams expressing his thoughts on the intense match.

"Yeah, absolutely. Both teams approached the game with a lot of energy, a really modern style of play. The high tempo led to mistakes, but it was exciting for everyone. Love the approach from both teams, and that's why there were a lot of tired bodies at the end," Williams said.

Reflecting on the match, Williams acknowledged Crawley's early advantage. "They hit us with their first shot on target, a really good move. I was worried we might feel tired quicker, but we managed to get back on terms quickly enough to give us belief."

Aaron Nemane’s goal against Taye Ashby-Hammond from a season earlier certainly jogged Williams’ memory. "He's a very good goalkeeper with a big character. He'll get more right than wrong, but he got caught out this time. Last season's chip from Aaron Nemane was shocking for everyone, especially Aaron. But he's a very, very good goalkeeper."

When asked about what he enjoyed seeing compared to the previous game, Williams emphasised the importance of energy. "Energy and aggression were back. There was a period where we didn't make enough tackles in the middle due to fatigue, but the substitutes brought more bite. Junior's pressing was fantastic, giving everyone a lift."

Williams explained the first substitution, stating, "It was a problem with Sam Slocombe. I'm happy for Stony (Aidan Stone) to have an opportunity he's been waiting for. Disappointed for Sam, but Stone is ready to go back in."

The coach expressed satisfaction with goals from various players. "Jim O'Brien's first of the year and Junior's smart goal were brilliant. I love Junior's performance; he gave us loads of energy. It's important when all the guys celebrate together."

Commenting on the end of the game, Williams highlighted the toll on players. "David McGoldrick got a knock, and Jodi Jones had cramps. It says a lot about the high tempo of the game and the relentless pressing. Macca [Macaulay Langstaff] was incredible, at times he's playing left back and then attacking the box."

Looking ahead to the upcoming cup tie, Williams explained the absence of Tobi Adebayo-Rowling and Dan Gosling. "They need more training to improve conditioning. Being on the bench limits high-intensity training. Tobi wasn't ready after a hamstring problem, so they trained well today."

As Notts County savoured their victory, Williams recognised the challenges ahead with games coming thick and fast, emphasising the need for continued energy and performance on tough pitches.

we need to compose ourselves a little better to begin with, crawley chased everything and made it hard but a good team might have scored a second before we had even equalised. i am very happy with the overall performance, the second half we were superb and i always felt confident knowing we would be attacking the kop. i think every player who covered did a very reliable role and helped not to miss anyone majorly but we can see the difference the likes of matt palmer makes. yet sam austin coming in and doing what he can certainly helped.

We can handle injuries, but we must keep in mind that our performance might drop. When we’re away from home, it’s fair to ask for a change in tactics, as we’re more comfortable at Meadow Lane. The lads did a great job to turn the game around and win.

As for Sam Slocombe, I hope he’s not seriously injured. I’m fond of both him and Aidan Stone, so it would be worrying if Slocombe was out for a long time. But Stone is fully capable of stepping back into the team. We were fantastic in the second half, everything just fell into place and we turned the tables on Crawley. Our pressure on them really paid off. It was a brilliant win.

Dan Crowley played a crucial role, and David McGoldrick also deserves a lot of credit for his tireless work to overcome the early setback. I don’t think Sam Slocombe or many other goalkeepers could have done anything about Adam Campbell’s well-aimed shot. It was just too well hit, but our goals were just as impressive, I believe.

This match truly highlighted the robustness of our team and coach Williams' tactical brilliance. His emphasis on energy and aggression blended perfectly to outshine Crawley's modern style of play. Special mention to McGoldrick and Jones despite their physical setback. They fought till the end - a true mark of sportsmanship and dedication!

Got to agree with Lukey Boy, I love it when Notts play with energy and aggression this is what fans want to see as long as it’s controlled aggression of course.

This was a match that truly showcased Notts County’s grit, commitment, and spirit. It was heartening to see every player stepping up, taking responsibility, and playing their part in securing the win. Williams’ management of the substitutes, especially considering the physical strain on the players, was particularly commendable. Junior’s pressing was of the highest quality, and his energy seemed to lift everyone around him!

Watching the match, I was particularly impressed with how Notts County handled the dual threats of fatigue and an energetic opposition. Initially, it looked like fatigue might cost us the game, but when the substitutes came on, they added a new layer of aggression and dynamism.

Full credit to Williams for his smart substitutions! The match had a high tempo throughout, resulting in a few casualties on our end, but the lads managed to push through and clinch a win. It's clear to see how much this victory meant to everyone, not just for the morale, but also for the solidarity it fostered.

What a cracking match that was! Our Notts County lads really showed what they’re made of, didn’t they? Despite Crawley’s aggressive tactics, our boys didn’t back down. Instead, they stepped up their game, showcasing a strategy full of energy and determination.

And let’s not forget those spectacular goals from Jim O’Brien and Junior, absolutely top-notch! You could really feel the team’s enthusiasm and joy, which only added to the delight of the win. All in all, it was a brilliant display of football. Well done, lads!
