Martin Allen favourite to take over at Notts after Paul Hurst pledges future to Grimsby

Joe Jones

Grimsby Town manager Paul Hurst has ruled out a move to Notts County by pledging his future to the Blundell Park outfit.

The 41-year-old was second-favourite among the bookies to take on the reins at Meadow Lane behind ex-Magpies boss Martin Allen.

Following Hurst's criticism of some Mariners supporters after their National League play-off final win over Forest Green Rovers, it was thought that he would be departing Humberside sooner rather than later.

The latest development, however, saw him pledge his future to Grimsby.

"I genuinely haven't got any other offers to be a consideration," he said.

"There's nothing to tempt me. My plan now is to look to next season with Grimsby Town and building a squad that we can be proud of."

That leaves Allen as clear favourite to become Notts boss with the current Barnet manager now 1/1 to return to Meadow Lane.

Personally, I'd be delighted if Martin Allen was reappointed at The Lane.

Granted, he's not everyone's cuppa tea but I dig his style. Unorthodox, bit of a maverick, misunderstood bohemian tendencies but intensely focused and strongly determined.

I'm unsure of MA's current contract with Barnet. Though, I don't quite get the footballing sensitivities of making approaches for other clubs' managers. When does tapping up become poaching?

I do not think Notts will go for someone else in contract.

If Martin Allen was unattached he would be ideal to steady the reigns. I just do not see the club paying compensation for a manager, I have money on another unknown manager with no experience.

I would welcome Martin Allen back definitely what we need to steady things down and make sure next season can still be looked forward to .
