Martin Paterson on Newport County Test: “We’re Ready, But It’s About Performance, Not Hype”

Martin Paterson insists that the hard work must continue as Notts County prepare for their League Two opener away at Newport County.

The new head coach, who replaced Stuart Maynard following last season’s play-off semi-final defeat, spoke candidly ahead of his first competitive game in charge.

While the atmosphere around the club has been buoyant, Paterson admitted his own focus remains firmly on preparation rather than emotion. “Yes, I think I'd be a liar if I get as excited as everybody else does,” he said. “At this moment, as a head coach, it's not excitement. It's almost a double checking of everything that you've done.”

He acknowledged the excitement within the squad, however. “They’re ready now,” he said. “I think they just want the game to come around as quickly as possible.”

Reflecting on pre-season, Paterson said he felt “very settled” at the club and in the area, but admitted that assessing the squad was initially difficult due to the unfamiliar opposition faced during the friendlies. “Over the last two games, I've seen enough to know that, okay, I think I'm pleased with the group at this moment.”

This summer has seen ten new arrivals at Meadow Lane, including trialist Keanan Bennetts and loanee Jayden Luker. On Bennetts, Paterson said, “He's come in on trial and deserved a contract… that aligns with the kind of characters I want, people that earn the right to play for Notts County.”

Luker’s arrival followed a longer period of tracking. “Monitoring him for a while, that's been ongoing… delighted to get it done before the season starts.”

Though pleased with the current group, Paterson confirmed the club is still active in the market. “We're still working and actively collaborating as a recruitment team to get some targets over the line in the next few weeks.”

Looking ahead to the clash with Newport, Paterson said that early season analysis can be tricky but took steps to minimise that. “I actually went to \[their] game in person… so I'm aware of Newport.”

He admitted the nature of an opening day fixture makes it unpredictable. “I'd be a liar to say I know exactly what's going to conspire, but we're ready.”

On the subject of pressure and expectations, he was clear-eyed. “If you play for Notts County, you've got to be at peace with that and it should be a challenge that you're ready to get your teeth into.”

While he acknowledged the importance of a good start, Paterson struck a note of caution. “One swallow doesn't mean a summer… it’s being emotionally balanced to understand that.”

Asked what success looks like, Paterson avoided bold predictions. “We want to get into the highest position, highest league we can… but if you look too far ahead, you trip up over your feet.”

He also spoke about the club’s much-discussed collaborative structure, insisting that the decision-making process remains clear. “I make all decisions on the team, substitutions and how we go about it… but I'm not above being humble enough to discuss after, can we improve?”

When asked directly whether he sees Notts as promotion contenders, Paterson didn’t hesitate. “I do. Strongly do. But… if we don't perform in the first five games to those levels that we should do, then we're not going to be. Talk is cheap.”

As the Magpies prepare to begin their campaign in Wales, Paterson’s message is simple: focus, honesty and hard work.

There’s a lot to take from this. Paterson comes across as very grounded, which is exactly what we need after the ups and downs of last season. He’s clearly put the work in to understand the squad, and it’s encouraging to hear how much thought has gone into recruitment. I also liked what he said about being emotionally balanced, you can tell he’s focused on the long haul, not just short-term hype. Feels like a fresh but sensible approach.

“Talk is cheap” - proper mentality that. Let the football do the talking.

very pleased with how martin paterson has approached the season, i think he makes some good points and i am happy with how he is leading the players. some managers get ahead of themselves and whilst i do think paterson is sending messages to us fans. they are encouraging and focused, which seems to be much like his vision as the head coach.

Think it’s brilliant that Paterson values the collaborative setup but also takes full responsibility for football decisions. Shows he’s confident in his own thinking while being open-minded enough to reflect and improve. That’ll only help the team. Also, liking how much detail he gives, feels like he’s already got a good grip of what the club’s about.

Liking the honesty. No false promises, just hard graft and focus.

You can tell Paterson isn’t getting carried away. No bold claims, just straight talk. The line about “one swallow doesn’t make a summer” is exactly what some fans need to hear too.

We’ve had good starts before that didn’t last, this time, it needs to be built on something more solid. Let’s give him time and see where this leads. Good start, though.

Luke Williams was praised for giving a good insight into football. People liked hearing his views on Notts and how he explained things clearly.

Martin Paterson seems very focused. He looks like someone who wants to use his experience as a player to help the team do well. He talks a lot about results and performances, which shows he means business.

There are plenty of positives to take, but I really hope we can start the season well.

He speaks honestly, and I like that. He seems to want some control over the questions he answers, which makes sense. It can be annoying when the media keep asking about promotion. If he thinks the squad is capable, he’s unlikely to say no.

No manager would want to deny their team. But his focus on performances shows he believes the players can do well. We’re capable of putting in good displays. Results might not always go our way, but if we work hard and defend properly, the good results should follow.

Feels like the right mix of calm confidence and realism from the gaffer.

I think that the Club has recruited well over the summer & I believe that the players that have come in can bring Notts some success this season.

I think we are just missing a good quality striker that could complete the jigsaw for Notts.

Head Coach Martin Patterson wants some more incomings. I hope he gets his way & the brothers allow at least a good quality striker at this level to complete a good & positive summer of recruiting.

This gives me a lot more confidence heading into the season. I wasn’t sure what to expect after Maynard left, but Paterson seems to have a clear head and a thoughtful approach. He’s not hyping things up but he’s not avoiding pressure either.

That balance is important. The quote about “being at peace with the pressure” stood out, that’s what it takes to be at a club like Notts. You’ve got to want it.

He’s very down to earth isn’t he, he appears to be very honest and genuine, I wish him luck I really hope it works out for him and for us.

Some managers say all the right things, but then things don’t go well and they make excuses. It happens a lot.

I don’t think Martin Paterson will be like that. He talks clearly and seems to know what he’s doing.

I just hope he gets the best out of the players. I also hope fans give him time and don’t turn on him too fast.
