When the chips are down

Featured Replies

Yes we had one of those, the chips seemed to taste better too. Happy memories of home made chips cooked in a chip pan on the gas cooker.

My mam also used to buy peas in the pod from the greengrocer, I used to love getting the peas out and eating a few raw ones as I went along. I bet kids today have never seen fresh peas in the pod.

We don't usually buy them any more - we just cut potatos into wedges or chips, sprinkle some oil on them and put them in the air fryer. Hardly takes any longer and you know exactly what's in them.

I still peel my own potatoes for chips and mash. I don’t like that instant stuff, it just doesn’t taste the same. Oven chips aren’t as bad as some people say. If you’re not sure, try ones that can be microwaved and compare. Even fries from the microwave leave me feeling disappointed.

It’s a shame how many people have swapped effort for convenience. I’d rather do things properly, enjoy the better taste, and get a bit of exercise while I’m at it.

My mum would always cook fish and chips on a Friday. I didn't like fish as a boy because of the bones, but my mum would bake a steak pie, so I would have my chips, pie & mushy peas ( home made mushy peas), every Friday or alternatively fish fingers

@Robbie as a boy did you call your mother mum or mam, mine was always mam, I thought mam was common locally or perhaps it was just me.

It seems to have gone out of favour now.
