Getting your best players on the pitch

Featured Replies

Switching formations or systems mid season is a bigger deal than it was in decades past, and needs a strong motivating reason.

We actually have one right now, the title of the post 'Getting your best players on the pitch'

Under LW, our best performers were attackers. That hasn't been the case this season (the last one too, although there was a fair bit balance Bass/ Platt/Bedeau v Didzy/Jatta)

This season though? Haven't our better players been McDonald, Platt since he came back, Macari's been super-steady and Bedeau is one of our best players period?

A back 4 of Macari-Platt-McDonald-Bedeau looks pretty strong to me. Palmer and Robbo in front of them is fine. We could surprise teams with 3 behind Jatta.

Can't believe I'm suggesting going from 3 to 4 defenders when chasing promotion but there is a justification based on performance quality of the players I think.

I think it's all about creativity. I've mentioned previously that our main creative outlets as a team lie in our attacking midfielder and wing backs. With our wing backs, I've found myself wanting to change style because we've not seen that consistency like we did with Nemane and Jones previously. Playing WB's also leaves us more vulnerable and exposed to threaded passes around the back. Our WB's, and this might be a tad harsh, have all shown that they are more squad players at this level and nothing short of the occasional 7 out of 10 performance. It’s also slightly odd we’re putting so much pressure on this working as everyone and their dog knows that Dennis, Jatta and Grant aren’t gonna get to the ball first on any cross, inverted wing back or not.

I think it’d take less weight and probably criticism of Grant as well if we played a 4-2-3-1, because he can press while (both normal and inverted) wingers can be more creative and attacking. I’d really like us to mix it up, because I could literally write a scouting report for the next 20 teams we face as it’s blindingly obvious.
