Alan Smith

I have found a few who see it my way, but most seem to think he was hot headed yesterday.

Let me explain my belief of what I saw.

The team struggled to get into the first 20 minutes.

All the clapping in the world on the pitch wasn't lifting the players, nor was "come on lads".

I give Smith the benefit of the doubt in the fact that he MAY have decided the team a firecracker up its %$£" so he decided to start putting the boot in and get a few players riled up on both sides. I'm not saying his challenges were fair and didn't deserve his booking, but maybe, just maybe it was an old head reading the game and trying to fire up the team? Meaning he didn't need subbing at half time and let Jones take over? Who I normally rate, but yesterday was a passenger.

Obviously SD saw it the same as most and I am happy to accept he was just being bloody minded and stupid, but I think there may have been a calculated decision by an old pro.

I wouldn't play Alan Smith against sides we expect to beat us, I'd save him for the physical ones from the lower part of our league. He isn't 'useless' but his age is showing and his legs have gone. I don't really think it's fair the amount of bad comments which gets directed towards him at games, he can pass the ball brilliantly and still receive abuse.

I'd probably not start him either, use him as a sub when the opposition gets tired.

That said I don't blame him for getting carded or not being able to play as some might have hoped.

I think whether you call it hot headed or "trying to fire up the team" he would definitely have got a 2nd yellow had he remained on the field.

I certainly don't blame him for the fact the years are catching up with him. Jeepers the injury he got at Man Utd could and would have finished off some people.

I still think the tackles were reckless...

For a player with his background and experience - coupled with the role he has here - he is indisciplined and reckless.

What with the manager spending most the game berating officials & Smith on the field behaving like an idiot, no wonder we have problems. What an example to set. Derry needs to curb his indiscretions but I'd get rid of Smith asap, he is an utter liability tbh.

@Pies4u Supposedly Derry will be 'having a chat' with the players, I do hope he tells everyone to calm down including himself in the mirror. ;)

Mind you, at Doncaster I would have been much worse.

at least hes willing to ruffle feathers and actually try to win the ball, he just needs to calm down like many others.

He is a pillock. Always has been - he's never learned to control his temper. He must be pretty dim too, commits crude fouls under the ref's nose and argues the toss when he's already been carded. I have no idea what he is supposed to contribute but selecting him ahead of Jones is pure madness tbh. I'd save the salary and sign domeone with a brain.

As for Derry, well he just has to stop shouting the odds at officials all game. Reckon they will go for him, big style, he has form for it now.

I watched him develop and was an exciting prospect. Loved him at Leeds then United, but for me the nasty leg break signalled his demise. He was never the same player again.

I know he's dropped down the leagues over recent years but when Notts signed him I was ecstatic. A selfie with him at Nuneaton made my summer.

Unfortunately he is not the player he was not even close. Occasional flashes put a smile on my face but overall it pains me to watch someone I held in high regard. He's always been a battler who played with his heart on his sleeve but sometimes he goes missing, I'd rather see him getting stuck in than coasting so I look at this from a slightly different angle. I hope he serves the team well, doesn't do anything silly and works well with/for the team in whatever capacity and wish him well for the season.

Love Smudger to hit a game winning screamer it would make me one happy pie.

COYP!

Regards Allen. You Pies!

Perhaps, he can focus on his other Job, Coaching. Playing the odd Game till the end of the season.

Bout time we saw a bit of Fire at Notts, on and off the pitch. Just my opinion of course.

Some fans actually wanted us to start him up front, I didn't think that would work myself. He would probably miss more, though I am the same with that regards. I don't have the legs!

Coaching will be the way on from here, he could help bring players through.

His passing when not under pressure is amazing!

He's got a lot he can pass onto our players, even the likes of Noble.
