I think our central defenders got a very rough deal last season, whoever we played there would have struggled due to the other two weaknesses I mentioned.  They got no protection at all from midfield, it was a regular sight to see two opposing midfielders running at them with the option of two strikers to pass to or a shot on goal.  Likewise, our full backs were useless at preventing crosses into the box.  I think the central defenders were the victims of being left exposed by the shortcomings in other areas.

Whilst I normally agree with @Elite_pie, lack of close marking by central defenders away from home especially, cost us dear last season.
