GCSE/A-Level results

Today is that old notorious chestnut, GCSE results day, so I hope all our fans who sat them this year have done well! Likewise for A-level results earlier this month.

Anybody want to talk about their results, or those of a younger relative who got them this month, let's hear how you did!

Also, those whose results came some years ago, share your stories about what you remember from the day and how you got on post-results!

If any members, or visitors received their results I hope you achieved your targets - if you haven't, don't be discouraged because the path in life is never straight forward and if you truly want to do something you will find a way to make it happen.

All the best!

My lad got his today and did OK in them, which was what we as parents expected. He hasn't quite got the grades needed for his college course, so will wait and see what they say tomorrow, but then again they wanted him to do this course which was higher than the one he applied for.

All the best to anyone who got their results yesterday. At the time it's drilled into you that your GCSEs are the most important thing ever, but in fact they're just one step in a long journey. If you got what you wanted, congratulations. But if you didn't it's not the end of the world!

Oh yeah. I know a lot of people who failed their GCSEs then knuckled down in the coming years and ended up winning at life.

For me it was the other way round. I did well in mine (8 A*s and As), but then I made big mistakes further down the line, choosing A-Level subjects which didn't really matter, studying a generic humanities degree at a former polytechnic, and then spending the following 5 years of my life after university working in call centres. I then took what I thought was a big upwards step in my career when I left one place (where I'd been there 3 years) but had an awful experience and was fired after four weeks, which ended up triggering depression in me as I felt like I was on the "professional scrapheap" - and having that earlier point of reference which suggested that I was going to do well in life compared to the reality, well it f***ed me up big time.

Luckily that was the kick up the ass which then led me to pursue my career as a writer and journalist, and now at 29 years of age I feel I have rectified my earlier mistakes, but it took a lot of muddling through, soul searching and agony.

If I could have one thing to say to any young people who have just done their GCSEs, it's this - your immediate post-GCSE options, whether it be A-level, college, apprenticeships - THAT is the most important moment of your young life. So don't just dither and go with the flow because you WILL end up s**t creek without a paddle and it's a huge effort to get back down. So choose wisely - something you're good at, or you genuinely feel you'd be good at, but bearing in mind what the job market is looking for.
