A brand new season is about upon us as Kevin Nolan’s Notts County travels to the Ricoh Area where The Magpies’ will take on Mark Robins' Coventry City. The hosts haven’t been in the bottom tier of English football since the 1958-59 season and will be highly expected to bounce back into League One at the first attempt. Notable summer recruitments for Coventry City consist of Jack Grimmer, Marc McNulty, Michael Doyle and Liam O’Brien. The Sky Blues, much like Notts, will be hoping that the additional strengthening of their defence will be enough to overturn last season’s disappointment (relegation, in their case), and allow the club to return to better times. Run-down of their last five pre-season friendlies Saturday 8th July – Sutton United 0 Coventry City 1 Tuesday 18th July – Barnsley 3 Coventry City 1 Tuesday 25th July – Mickleover Sports 0 Coventry City 1 Saturday 29th July – Coventry City 0 Liverpool XI 0 Sunday 30th July – Nuneaton Town 1 Coventry City 2 The Players – Fact Sheet Former Notts loanee Kwame Thomas features for the Sky Blues as a striker; the 21-year-old has made 14 appearances, netting three goals. The Key Players Marc McNulty will be hoping to impress his new club after leaving Sheffield United in the summer, the striker has tallied up a fair few goals whilst playing for various clubs and will be eager to showcase his talent within League Two. Peter Vincenti will also be a key man for Coventry City come Saturday, his influence and play will be a major asset in midfield. Liam Kelly and Kyel Reid will also offer the hosts a lot of bulk with their attacking phases, so Notts will have to be aware of their runs and prevent any chance of the midfield duo running in behind our defence. Style of Play, Strengths, and Weaknesses I fully expect Mark Robins to be more direct with Coventry City on Saturday, bolstering their attacking options in a formation, which will suit their attempts to retain the ball – as they attempt to dictate the tempo. In pre-season the Sky Blues have been trying to strengthen themselves up at the back and put together a convincing performance to hold out against a very talented Liverpool XI largely made up of under-21 talent. City are known for being a direct club, who patiently build play and use their wide-man to make the difference. However, they have a fairly weak link in goal - the defence can be punished with clever play and from set pieces, with Liam Walker being a noticeable candidate for Notts in order to utilitise free space found at the back. Much of the game will be played within the centre of the park, so it will be vital that we try to use our crossing and chances from distance in order to gain momentum. I think for us to become serious promotion contenders we will have to gain the away form of last season, combined with the home form under Kevin Nolan. First few opening games will be crucial but we will know more after like 10 games. I think the opening run of games is a blessing, it gives us a chance to become consistent after the difficult ties. Coventry should walk the league, yet they did struggle to adapt to League One and they can be a club that is pushed over by the more physical clubs. It should be an interesting season!

He was one of the few players fans really rated in pre-season, albeit against lower opposition teams. I'm not sure we aim to push all the players out on loan, yet I suspect we will see some of ours and these new signings pushed out for 'developmental reasons'. I'd be against seeing Notts used as a barging chip or way to sign better players for Ilkeston Town though.

I suspect Coventry will line-up against us in an attacking formation, so I would naturally expect them to play swift passing and direct football. They have a talented team, one I really don't understand as to why they ended up in League Two but then again they have owner issues. As opening games come, this will beat Stevenage no doubt. We just need to remain organised and move as a unit, Shaun Derry managed to get victories against similar sides when he first took charge of Notts (in his first full season). The key for us will be to avoid hoofing the ball, yet we need to be very careful with how we play the ball on the ground. If we move to fast, Coventry will intercept the ball and pile pressure onto us. If we move too slowly, we'll likely waste what chances we get due to rushing in the final third. I'd suggest playing like we did against Forest in the pre-season friendly, allow them to move the ball around but close them down - then take the chances which come by moving the ball around well.

I think its better than that of what quite a fair portion of fans would have you believe. Every owner makes decisions which we will agree with, I was very disappointed about the ladies team but the reasoning Alan Hardy gave made it very difficult to argue with. He's breeding confidence into the club, albeit some questionable interactions on Twitter but it's certainly more 'rosy' than anything we've had for the past 3 or 4 years. If we do well this season, people will judge him less but if we struggle - he better take cover.

Hopefully Searson can come back stronger and push for the first team, yet I do feel Fitzsimons is required. Adam Collin needs to know he isn't our number one by default, as he did when we had Scott Loach for some bizarre reason. Also, it means nothing where he's played - provided he's moving forward. I have faith in those that have accessed him as good enough. Welcome to Meadow Lane Ross Fitzsimons.

Personally, I would have added Alan Judge myself. It's kinda funny how the majority of good players tend to be in midfield, it would be nice if we managed to locate a good goal scorer who was on loan - but yeah Louis Laing, Callum McGregor, Kevin Grealish, LLoyd Sam and Matt Richie are all good calls.

The first home game for Notts County of the 2017/18 programme was a pre-season friendly against city rivals and cross-river neighbours Nottingham Forest. As all Trentside derbies go, it was a lively, hotly contested occasion, both on the pitch and in the stands among the two sets of supporters. Ultimately the Championship (just about) side got the win, with Ben Brereton and Apostolios Velios grabbing the goals in the second half for Mark Warburton's Reds. Despite the result not being ideal for the Black and White Army, the performance will have given Kevin Nolan plenty of food for thought as he prepares his charges for the upcoming campaign. Pride of Nottingham was at Meadow Lane to watch the game and to take photos of fans in the stands and elsewhere in the ground. Did you spot our photographer? There's some good call player wise, certainly people who could add depth to the ranks. I personally hope if we have the 100k talked about when Notts chased Noble, that we use it to buy-in some solid additions. I know, there are fans who think it's silly money. However, I believe it could be a wise investment. I have no issue with Notts selling and replacing players, I'd rather see them go for a fee than on a free. So certainly having players that are good enough to walk straight into our squad would be a massive thing in terms of depth. Yet I can't see Toni Martinez coming out on loan. Great read mate!

That's pretty fair @Mikkh. During the League Cup game a few years back, there was certainly spells where we was louder - especially when it looked to be all set for us, until Wes Morgan stepped up and placed his thunder bolt. We just want to progress, there's banter from both sides but there's a lot of Forest fans who sadly take rivalry way too far. Provided there's no trouble and we all make the atmosphere decent, I don't care about the score - I just want to see a good game between two decent clubs. Notts always tends to do better when Forest does anyway.

To my knowledge he's always been in the background, but I swear it was him who told me a lot about the failings of certain aspect. I could be muddled mind, I sometimes do but I know during a period we lost players due to them not having contracts. I was told about a lad who was picked up by a Championship side, though I don't remember his name now (not Wes Morgan) - a midfielder. Do you know @Northants Pie?

A few friends have suggested that Montel Gibson had a bad attitude with 'smaller' clubs, it's a shame because footballers should just want to play and gain experience. I think people are less motivated these days when it comes to self-improvements. BTW, I've been told by a few people that Wes Morgan was poached from us and that we lost him due to him not being under contract. I can't recall the full details, I think Charlie Mcparland told me that none of the players had contracts due to cost saving measures.
