David McGoldrick is my Man of the Match. He set Notts up to win and his introduction gave the squad a big lift. There were some good individual performances, but I feel McGoldrick tops them all.

I want to give the referee credit for calling it a foul against Gillingham when McGoldrick got his smart yellow card. That could have sealed the game. Also, the way he ended the match, as our keeper had gone up for it and again we may have been caught short. The rest of his decisions were mostly poor. Notts had an off day on goal and missed some chances that on another day would have been put away. The same can be said about the result; we may have won it on another day. It is what it is. Am I happy? No, but our lads played well.

Footballers have always been known for being a bit short in the brain department, but it’s just how he speaks. Everyone usually repeats one or two words. It’s not enough to hate him, even if it can be annoying. He’s been one of England’s best-ever strikers.

Some fans might come crashing down to earth now that we have experienced our first defeat, but all we can do is keep going. It would be disappointing if tickets started to be sold for the Chesterfield game just because we lost one game. Go there, enjoy it, and back the lads who played so bravely yesterday.

No criticism of Stuart Maynard or the team. Maynard made his points clear and he speaks for us fans. The decisions against Notts were ridiculous, but you have to accept it and move on. I am not bothered that Maynard was issued a yellow card; it shows his frustration and passion.

The comprehensive pitch reconstruction was desperately needed, particularly to tackle the issues with drainage that Matt Hallam highlighted. It’s a relief to know that the new state-of-the-art drainage system will virtually eliminate the threat of waterlogging. Also, the future-proofing with undersoil heating is wise, even if it’s not connected yet. This project was clearly a colossal effort and is a reflection of the club’s ambition and commitment to progress. I’m eagerly anticipating the first match on the new pitch!
