Doncaster got promoted as champions last season with 24 wins & 12 draws. It's always an advantage to beat teams in the top seven, however if you just draw some of those games it can be as good as a win. Notts got 20 wins & 12 draws last season and missed out on the automatics by just two wins because if Notts had achieved those two wins they would have had a superior goal difference over Bradford. If Notts achieve 25 wins, all being equal, they will probably be promoted even if they don't beat any of the current top seven, but it is always a big advantage to beat your nearest rivals as we witnessed last season. I think that Notts under Martin Paterson are in a better place to win these top games now. I think there is a difference in the player mentality this season by having the belief that they can win these top games against their closest rivals. The December fixtures will tell us a lot about whether that question of beating teams in the top seven will be answered or not when Notts meet four of the current top seven & one of them home & away.

Notts have a tough fixture list in December . Five games that could define a season one way or the other. Two of the five are against MK Dons. 9th Dec: MK Dons (H) 13th Dec: Grimsby (A) 20th Dec: Walsall (H) 26th Dec: Chesterfield (A) 29th Dec: MK Dons (A) We meet four of our major rivals for honours all in one month. It's going to be great battle in every match. Can Notts come through it unscathed with plenty of points? I think I would be happy if we could avoid defeat in four of those games. I don't think it is beyond the realms of possibly to achieve that, but Grimsby, Chesterfield & MK Dons away will be very tough. I think that last season, I don't think it would have been possible to be that optimistic. Our record against the top 10 sides wasn't good at all, but this season Notts are made of sterner stuff. Fifteen points are on the table. I think 7 or 8 points from a possible 15 would be ok, anything more would be a bonus. It's certainly going to be an exciting December. Looking forward to it.

I never believe the click bait stories till they actually happen. If it is true, & that's a big if, it will be nice to see Luke back in football management, but it does beg the question, why take a job where a club is rock bottom in League 1, when he could have easily taken a job with a leading league 2 club?
