1971. When your Pound was worth something.
Crisp bags, pop cans, chocolate bars.... At what point will they cost £2 each? Inflation does not make sense in some cases.

The opening of GEM in West Bridgford
This is Asda now, right? I have never heard of this supermarket, but the building looks similar to what I recognise as being Asda. Just with some moderisation. How big of a supermarket chain was GEM?

Hidden history : Escaping from East Berlin
I watched a programme about Anne Frank the other day, it reconstructed what it would have been like at the beginning of the invasion of German troops, going into hiding, and eventually how the Franks were discovered to be hiding. I couldn't imagine fleeing my home, my family and taking a risk to find safety like some of these brave souls.

Leasehold to Freehold, an important read
I have watched a lot of Homes Under the Hammer [don't laugh], and they stress the importance of making sure you check the title. If it's a leasehold, make sure you can extend it, or have enough time to sell it on. I would only look at Freehold properties when I am in a position to buy, I know not everyone can, and that leasing is virtually securing what could be considered a rental for usually your lifetime. Even landlords of rental properties are pulling cons by claiming they are selling their houses in order to vacate legal tenants, and then after a few weeks, they push the property price up.

Roos
We have been blessed in the keeper department for many years, that most haven't been seen as the reason for dropping points. I don't think Kelle Roos is at fault for our poor start, but he certainly contributed towards it and tends to make mistakes most natural keepers wouldn't. I want to see every player succeed, and I don't choose to single out players and that is why I am pleased with the progress he's been making. I would much rather see him being voted for as the Man of the Match for when Notts have played well, than not. However, there's a lot of praise deserved in his direction for the fact we left Barnet with the 3 points. It would have been an achievement had we drawn, considering the treat Barnet displayed and I hope we see more of this. It's unfortunate that Roos hasn't built confidence amongst our supporters, but with more performances of this nature he might just do that. I want to feel like our keeper is protecting games, not ask risk of giving points away and sadly that is how Roos has come across for the most part of his time. Some poor decisions, and erractic behaviour cost us, but he's looking like he is improving which is promising.

Scouting dossier : Barnet v Notts
Ryan Glover would be high on my list of players to watch, with Anthony Hartigan and Nnamdi Ofoborh not far behind. I thought Barnet played very well and stuck to their game plan, which they executed to make us struggle to pick out passes forward. Idris Kanu does look like a good winger, and Barnet does have several very good establishing talents. Adam Senior is another player to watch out for, as he's a good defender.

Who's your Man of the Match v Barnet?
It's hard not to vote for Kelle Roos, he had a big presence in the win yesterday and pulled off some vital saves which only deserves to be recognised. He's had his criticism, but he deserves praise here.

Faroe Islands take another scalp
Wouldn't it be great to see them qualify and have a bloom in the sport, pushing further generations to improve and pick up their reputation, similar to Iceland, who often got overlooked by other Scanianavian countries.

Burton Albion lose £8m last season
Are they still being investigated for dodgy dealings? How does a League One team lose so much money? Burton might have a few more rough seasons ahead of them, and salvaging their place in L1 might not be their biggest battle. It's difficult to feel any sympathy when they broke their transfer record not long ago.

First Eleven Choices. Who's your Choice?
I am going to try to give a different perspective and not name a full squad. I would be a head coach who picked the squad based on who we were playing rather than who I felt should be in the starting eleven, and things would change per game, depending on who we are playing and on individual form. Kelle Roos, for the most part, is guaranteed a start. I would like to see Harry Griffiths pushed more, though I think Roos is the only "experienced" option we have. Rod McDonald is currently the best performing defender, and I would put him in the same bracket as Scott Robertson and Matt Palmer. Additionally, Jatta writes himself into the team, but Matthew Dennis's form does leave questions as to whether he should start or be on the bench. I think I would rotate between starting and bench, considering we lack options in the striker department. Tyrese Hall's form currently deserves him a start, though this could change, and it applies to the rest of the squad, which I haven't named. The bench could look mixed, defensive, or attack-based.

Weekly Chat Monday 13th to Sunday 19th October
Mondays are always the worst day of the week; it's wet and cold. Nobody is in a good mood at work, and I can't wait to get home. Today does not seem to be a productive one, but it's what you make of it. Mid-week, I have an interview with a Stockport County player, which is something I am looking forward to. The rest of the writing I am doing is mostly covering club news; give me a transfer window or something I can stick my teeth into.

Some players don't have what it takes to score
We are built to provide the forwards, and not so much other players, but there's no reason why players like Conor Grant can't improve their finishing. I think Matt Palmer is the more complete player at this stage, but there are positional and some techniques he could try in order to maximise any chances that come his way. He had a superb effort against Crewe saved; I had to double-check that it was Palmer who struck the shot. The difference between Palmer and Grant is the selflessness with which the skipper goes about applying his trade. He wants to win as part of the team, and I suspect assists and goals are just bonuses. Palmer is also a player that sees his worth; he's an established player and knows just how much Notts misses his absence. Grant has been discarded and hasn't found his place in teams; his confidence and age mean that he would need to settle in order to find form that would see him consecutively score goals. If he were scoring regularly, he would be in the team and showing that his form was good. While he works hard and is a very skillful player, the number of times he shines enough to be voted Man of the Match in games is very rare.
