"I'm Really Impressed With the Way We Defended" – Stuart Maynard on Notts' Resilience

PON_News

Notts County head coach Stuart Maynard expressed his satisfaction with his side’s defensive solidity after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Carlisle United at Meadow Lane.

A first-half goal from Gambian striker Alassana Jatta secured the three points, pushing the Magpies back into third place in the League Two table.

Speaking after the match, Maynard acknowledged the difficulty of the contest, describing Carlisle as a strong opponent.

“Football's a funny game, the way we performed at the weekend, and we come away with just the point… you've got to give huge credit to Carlisle, they're a very good team,” he said. He also noted that despite their current position, he does not expect Carlisle to struggle come the end of the season.

The head coach was particularly pleased with his team’s defensive organisation, highlighting their ability to limit Carlisle’s attacking opportunities.

“Defensively tonight, we've shown once again. It's another clean sheet, 11 for the season, and I didn't feel at any given stage under threat of conceding,” he stated. He emphasised that aside from one moment when goalkeeper Alex Bass, known as “Bassy,” misjudged a clearance and the visitors hit the post, Carlisle rarely troubled Notts County’s backline.

Maynard stressed that his side controlled how the opposition attacked, forcing them into wide areas where they were less effective. “They had a lot of possession in and around the final third, but I thought we decided where we wanted them to cross the ball from and shoot,” he explained. “I'm really impressed with the way that we defended tonight.”

While the match was tightly contested, the moment of real quality came from Jatta’s decisive strike. “Oh, definitely some goal,” Maynard admitted when asked if it was the standout moment of the game.

He believed Notts County had opportunities to increase their lead, particularly in the first half, but was pleased with the attacking display. “I thought we performed very well in the first half, attacking-wise I thought we were very comfortable. We were around the edge of their box a lot,” he added.

One of the key talking points of the match was a controversial refereeing decision when Nick Tsaroulla appeared to be fouled in the box. Maynard was left frustrated by the explanation given by the officials.

“I'm baffled why it's not [a penalty],” he said. “The fourth official said to me on the side, ‘the reaction of your players is why it's not a penalty,’ and I'm like, but we tell our players not to surround the ref. We don’t want players surrounding referees.”

Maynard also praised his substitutes for adapting quickly to the pace of the match, singling out Kellan Gordon, Zak Johnson, Curtis Edwards, and Will Jarvis. “I thought they were excellent to get up to the speed of the game very quickly,” he said.

Despite concerns over injuries, with Connor Grant coming off with a dead leg and Sam Austin sidelined due to groin tightness, Maynard remains optimistic about the team’s momentum.

He reiterated his belief in focusing on performances rather than the league table. “No, no, look, it's so tight… I think it'll be like this all the way to the wire,” he commented. “We've just got to keep performing the way we have.”

With another victory secured and their defensive record improving, Notts County will look to maintain their promotion push as they head into the crucial final stretch of the season.

Really pleased with how we’re managing games lately. Maynard has clearly worked on making us more solid at the back, and it’s paying off. That’s 11 clean sheets now, which is a great platform to build on. The goal was quality, Jatta took it really well, and he’s getting better every game. The referee situation is getting frustrating, though. That was a clear penalty, but the explanation Maynard got was baffling. Do they want players to surround the ref to get decisions? Because that’s what will happen. Either way, great result, and the squad looks strong even with a few injuries.

Hard-fought win against a tricky side. Notts looked comfortable, but we should’ve had that penalty! It also might not have been pretty to watch, but at least we are grinding out the wins. On to the next one.

Stuart has certainly turned the Notts County fortunes around with the side that he has helped to build.

The eight game form table sees Notts head the table with six wins out of eight & only one defeat.

A side that wishes to challenge for promotion needs to have a mean defence & eleven clean sheets so far this season is testament to a side that is clearly made up for the challenge.

The three players that have been brought in coupled with players coming back from injury have strengthened the squad too.

It's going to be an exciting run in to the end of the season for every Notts supporter. There is great optimism in the air for Notts chances of getting promotion.

i dont mind the performance, because carlisle made it difficult and it was almost a repeat of what happened in the second half earlier in the season away to them. the main thing is maintaining the form because this is what teams aiming for promotion do, it might not always be the best game but consistency in winning is the important takeaway. as for the officiating it sounds just like an excuse, nothing more.

A tough match but a well earned three points. We weren’t at our free flowing best, but the defensive discipline made all the difference. Jatta is turning into a real threat up front, and that finish was top class. Still can’t get over the penalty decision, though. The reasoning behind it is ridiculous, it shouldn’t matter how players react, a foul is a foul. Credit to the lads for staying focused and seeing the game out. Maynard’s got this team playing with confidence, and it’s good to see the subs making an impact as well. Gordon and Edwards in particular slotted in nicely. We’re right in the mix now, keep this up, and we’ll be fighting for promotion all the way.

Notts controlled the game, managed the defensive side well, and got a great goal to win it. Jatta is proving to be such an important player, not just for his finishing but for how he leads the line. The ref’s decision not to give the penalty was a joke, there’s no consistency in how these are judged.

I get that players should respect officials, but penalising them for not making a fuss is ridiculous. Thought the subs did well too, they slotted in seamlessly. We’re in a good position now, and if we keep playing like this, we’ll be right in the mix at the top.

It’s great to see these articles return.

Maynard is very honest with his assessment, it wasn’t a great game but at the end of the day it’s points that matter.

I believe we should celebrate the victory without overthinking our performance. Just because Carlisle are at the bottom of the league doesn't mean it would be an easy match.
