Kevin Nolan: 'Everyone in the Notts County squad is on board'

Joe Jones

Kevin Nolan has given a positive update of pre-season at Notts County so far, with everyone reporting back in "fantastic shape".

The Magpies gaffer also spoke of how everyone in the squad is on the same wavelength, which bodes well for a potentially fruitful season in League Two.

Notts' pre-season began late last week and things will get up and running sharpish, with a fixture against a Rolls Royce Leisure Select XI the first of the friendlies.

After that, it's full steam ahead with at least a game a week going into the 2017/18 campaign.

Nolan told the official club site: "The players have reported back in fantastic shape and everyone is ahead of where we wanted them to be.

"Now we have to hold them back a little. We don't want to do too much too soon because that's when injuries can pile up.

"The good thing is that the players have bought into what we want to do. It speaks volumes that everyone we offered a new contract to decided to stay. It means everyone in the squad is on board."

All sounds very positive, but what happens on the pitch is what matters.

He does contradict himself a few times - at the start he says there isn't much going on, but later he goes on to say we have plenty of irons in the fire. Maybe I should just relax more, I have the impression KN talks faster than he thinks.

The comments on Curtis Good were interesting too. He was very non-commital. To me it sounds as if Good is one of our targets, but quite low on the list. I'll reserve judgement whatever happens. Normally you'd expect a player of his age to have had loads of loan spells, but Good hasn't been out on loan in years. That could indicate that he was on the verge of a breakthrough, but he didn't quite make it. But I'd still prefer someone a bit more seasoned to organise the back line.

I think Kevin Nolan is just playing things down, there's probably plenty of 'options' we are exploring but little activity coming from that. Also, the Good comments I wouldn't be surprised if he missed heard the question and was playing catch up, sometimes when you don't prepare or have other focuses you make these makes.

I've been there myself.

He comes across as very eager to get things to be where they are required and I trust him, his judgement hasn't let us down so far. Just need to move on the transfers and bring in capable options, hopefully with plenty of quality to boot.
