Mark Cooper: 'Notts County players need to prove their worth or face departure'

Joe Jones

The post-Mansfield post-mortem continues for Notts County as manager Mark Cooper hints at a summer clearout should he be given the gig permanently.

Notts have been left reeling following their 5-0 defeat at Field Mill, their worst result in the history of the fixture.

"It's been a constant theme that they've (Notts) gone on little runs and then just capitulated," said Cooper.

"There is obviously a problem somewhere and it needs to be sorted out.

"I can't change the players right now, but they have to realise – and I said it after the Portsmouth game – that careers are on the line.

"If investment comes, then better players will come in. If there is no investment, then they will be changed anyway.

"They have to show they are worth being at the football club next year.

"It's a massive job. I have learned an awful lot about players' characters and their desire. There is a lot of work to be done."

He wants to have 'em in practising shooting at the goal instead of em trying to walk the ball into the net. As was the trouble yesterday. Genaro was always good for a few from far out, wasn't he earlier in the season. Not sure how to spell his last name lol.

Its good that he has settled the squad down but after Mansfield, I would hope some dont make it anywhere the starting line up. Give others a chance and see if it pays off.

As I said when he came in, I can't really judge him until next season but he's already impressed me - along with a number of Notts fans.

At half-time, with a cousin either side of me, we considered that, with a bit more composure around their box, we might have a more fruitful second half. Attacking towards our fans. Shooting boots had definately been left behind at Meadow Lane, and we were well positioned to see that the left flank wasn't working at all.

The capitulation that followed was about as bad as I can recall. Probably not since Macclesfield thumped us 5-nil a little over a decade ago.

On both occasions, I left after the fourth goal. On both occasions, a fifth had gone in by the time my key was in the ignition. I very seldom abandon Notts, but on these two such occasions, personally, I consider it necessary. Born of frustration, as the song goes.

An abect lack of pace and pride blight this Notts side of late. The new manager has quite some task ahead. I'd advocate an entirely new back four. Not merely because of this terrible drubbing, mind. As so very bad as it was.

This is a classic case of trying too hard. The players are worried that if they miss, they will get a roasting from there own fans so won't shoot. They try to go just a few yards extra, to make sure, and end up getting closed down. this brings more moans and groans and eats in to there confidence. So they try to get even closer to make certain, and so it goes on.
