Notts County have signed midfielder Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain, the brother of Liverpool and England player Alex, on a two-year deal from Portsmouth.

The 20-year-old becomes a Magpies player when his Fratton Park contract expires at the end of this month.

Oxlade-Chamberlain will not be fit for the next couple of weeks as he is recovering from a broken leg sustained towards the end of last season.

“When I played in the FA Cup here last season, I caught the eye of the manager,” he told the official Notts site. “It just went from there really.

“Notts got in touch with my side and Portsmouth didn’t want to offer me another contract, so I was was very happy to sign here.

“The manager wants me to push on and challenge the right-back and give him some competition.

“It is a good move for me to get out of my comfort zone and try and prove myself somewhere else and promotion is what we should be looking for."

At last we are building for the future as well as the present. All the signings are good and we can at last look towards waving goodbye to the constant threat of oblivion.

Obviously the bringing in of all of these new youngsters guarantees nothing, but the ambition and forward thinking can’t be faulted.
