Match Report: Notts County’s Late Equaliser Earns Draw Against Barrow

PON_News

Notts County battled back to salvage a 1-1 draw against Barrow in a hard-fought contest at Holker Street.

The Magpies dominated possession, controlling 72% of the ball, but it was the Bluebirds who opened the scoring and put Notts under pressure for much of the match.

The hosts made an early impact, taking the lead in the 7th minute through Rory Feely. Feely finished from close range, latching onto a pass from Katia Kouyate to fire past Alex Bass and give Barrow the advantage.

It was a frustrating start for Notts, who struggled to find their rhythm in the first half despite their control of the ball.

Barrow’s defensive organisation kept the Magpies at bay throughout the opening period. Notts County had a few opportunities, with Jevani Brown and Nick Tsaroulla both forcing saves from Barrow keeper Wyll Stanway.

However, it was the home side who looked the more dangerous in attack, registering seven shots on target to Notts' five.

The second half saw Notts County increase the pressure in search of an equaliser. Josh Martin, who came on as a substitute, tested Stanway with a low drive, and Brown also went close, but Barrow’s defence held firm.

With Barrow sitting back and absorbing pressure, the Magpies looked increasingly frustrated as they sought a breakthrough.

As the game progressed, it became a scrappy affair with both sides committing fouls.

Notts County racked up 14 fouls and received four yellow cards, while Barrow committed 16 fouls and had three players booked. The tension boiled over in the final stages as both teams battled for control.

Barrow thought they had done enough to secure all three points, but Notts County’s persistence paid off in dramatic fashion in added time. Deep into stoppage time, David McGoldrick was fouled in the penalty area by Chris Stokes, and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

McGoldrick calmly stepped up and dispatched the penalty into the bottom left corner in the 93rd minute, levelling the scores.

The late equaliser sparked a frantic final few minutes, with both teams pushing for a winner. Barrow’s Ben Jackson had a chance to restore his side’s lead, but his left-footed effort was well saved by Bass.

Despite the late drama, neither side could find a decisive second goal, and the match ended 1-1.

For Notts County, the draw will feel like a hard-earned point, though they may rue their missed opportunities, especially after controlling the match so comprehensively in terms of possession.

The Magpies will also be concerned by their inability to convert that dominance into clear-cut chances, and they will need to improve in front of goal in future fixtures.

Next up for the Magpies is a return to Meadow Lane, where they will hope to turn their possession into goals and get back to winning ways.

Despite the frustrations, David McGoldrick's late heroics ensured Notts County left Holker Street with a valuable point.

It wasn't a very good start to the match by Notts and they were hampered by further injuries to more key players.

But to his credit, Stuart changed things & Notts got better after that early concession, & grew into the game especially in the second half.

The players showed their fighting spirit once more to get a result out of the match in the end.

I thought that Tsaroulla had an excellent game, so did McGoldrick, & Bass was solid in goal once again. I think Martin & Brown had their best games since joining Notts too.

The growing injury list is a concern, & hopefully we will see some of those injured come back against Harrogate on Saturday.

Barrow gave us a proper challenge, especially in the first half. They pressed well and took their chance, which meant we were on the back foot for a while. However, I thought we grew into the game, and by the second half, we looked more like ourselves. The equaliser was deserved, and we had some good chances after that. It’s disappointing not to have grabbed a winner, but a draw was probably fair given the balance of play. Crowley’s influence was clear again, and it’s good to see Jatta making an impact too. A solid point in the end, and we’ll need to keep building from here.

Good to see the team push for the equaliser after a slow start.

Listened on the radio, sounded like Notts weren't quite at the races first half. But eventually showed up in the second half. Nick a point any which way it comes. COYP

It's frustrating to see us improve so late in a game that could have been different if Notts had dealt with Barrow earlier, but they deserve some credit. It felt like an FA Cup match, so we can consider ourselves fortunate to have earned another point. As the season goes on, draws like this will be very important.

Performances may vary, but as long as we stay focused and try to improve, that’s good enough for me. I believe we could use a boost in confidence; we seem to be going through a bit of a rough patch at the moment. However, it’s always encouraging when we start to find our rhythm in matches. We might have been fortunate with the penalty decision, but we definitely deserved the point.

We need to get Dan Crowley more involved further up the pitch. He has the ability to make things happen, but I thought he was quite quiet yesterday. Even Matt Palmer seemed a bit slow to start, which is usual for him, but Barrow make it difficult. They are a compact team when needed and quick to break. I thought they were excellent, even after Notts took control of the game. A point seems fair, considering we nearly lost.

I thought the game was a bit scrappy at times, especially in the first half. Barrow were well organised, and they took their chance when it came. For us, it felt like we lacked a bit of sharpness in the final third, and we couldn’t quite get going before half-time. The second half was much better though. We put them under more pressure, moved the ball quicker, and created some decent chances. Mcgoldrick’s equaliser was the least we deserved, and I thought we might go on to win it after that. All in all, a draw seems fair. It’s another point on the board, and we keep moving forward.

Not the result we hoped for, but credit to the lads for fighting back.

A point from this match seems fair, even though I think we could’ve done more to win it. Barrow started well and took the lead, and for a while, it seemed like we couldn’t break them down. They defended deep and made it tough for us to find space. That being said, I thought we came out much stronger in the second half. Crowley, as always, was at the heart of our best moments, and once we got the equaliser, there was a real push for a winner. It’s a bit frustrating not to take all three points, but credit to the team for not giving up. We’ll take the draw and move forward.

It was one of those matches where both teams had their moments. Barrow came out strong and took the lead, which didn’t surprise me given how organised they’ve been this season. For most of the first half, it felt like we struggled to get into our usual attacking flow, and credit to Barrow, they really made it difficult for us.

In the second half, we looked much better. Crowley’s creativity was key, and we started to find spaces in behind their defence. The equaliser was a relief, but it’s frustrating that we couldn’t push on for the winner. That said, a draw keeps the momentum going, and there are still positives to take from the way we fought back. We’ll need to build on this for the next match.

I think sometimes we need to push back and focus more on holding our ground. We give some teams too much space, which allows them to settle into their defensive positions.

It’s a good point, so I’m not complaining.
