Match Report: Notts County held to goalless draw by Wycombe Wanderers

Notts County have missed out on the chance to gain ground on the top three in League Two as they were held to a goalless draw by Wycombe Wanderers in Good Friday's match at Meadow Lane.

The Chairboys came to NG2 very much intent on leaving with a point and the Magpies could not break their defence down in an uninspiring, rain-sodden encounter.

Terry Hawkridge was first to threaten in the game as his low drive on 15 minutes drew a save from opposition goalkeeper Scott Brown after Lewis Alessandra had played the ball into the winger's path.

Although Wycombe had the better of the play, Shola Ameobi came close to an opener on 21 minutes when he met Hawkridge's cross but, from six yards out, he found the upright.

At the other end, Adebayo Akinfenwa rifled over after the ball fell kindly for him inside the box, before Joe Jacobson was booked for a foul on Hawkridge and Nathan Tyson joined him due to a foul on a breaking Dan Jones.

Shortly after the half-hour mark, Ameobi was brought down by Adam El-Abd in the Wycombe box but the referee played on, prompting Kevin Nolan to rightfully protest the decision, and the Notts boss was soon banished to the stands.

One more chance would come County's way before the break as hesitant Wycombe defending led to Matt Tootle having a free shot at goal, but Brown was able to keep the effort out.

Onto the second half and substitute Michael Harriman fired an effort over, and not long after, Nathan Tyson saw a goal ruled out for offside.

Both sides continued to trade blows, with Hewitt striking the woodwork on the header from Jon Stead's cross, before turning the ball wide on the rebound.

In the latter stages of the game Wycombe appeared happy to simply take the sting out of proceedings and run the clock down as the full-time whistle saw the spoils shared under the grim Nottingham sky.
