Notts County have claimed the top spot in the National League from Wrexham, following their 3-0 triumph over Wealdstone, in which Macaulay Langstaff set a new goalscoring record.

Langstaff, who scored his 41st goal of the season, broke the record for the most goals in a single campaign since the league was rebranded in 2015. County have now amassed 100 points this season with four games still remaining.

The Magpies' fortunes improved further upon learning of Wrexham's 3-1 loss to Halifax. Despite having played one more game than Wrexham, County leads the table on goal difference, ahead of the two teams' upcoming encounter in Wales on Monday.

County took an early lead against mid-table Wealdstone when Sam Austin curled the ball into the net off the far post in the eighth minute, after Langstaff had capitalized on a defensive error.

Langstaff then broke the record in the 60th minute, when he seized on goalkeeper Archie Mair's clearance and scored his landmark goal.

Francis Vincent added a third for the home side in the 76th minute, securing the win and establishing a three-goal advantage over Wrexham.

Notts County had a successful day, claiming top spot in the league while showing their ability to dominate and score.

incredibly touching game and well deserved win for notts, i think wrexham dropping points and us going top on goal difference was a remarkable part of the game. the chants from the kop was encouraging and it felt a lot more special. i think jason turner and @GrannyPieΒ would be proud of the lads.

as will every other fan who has sadly passed away during 2023. :(Β

Well done Notts, an emotional day, but a fantastic result for all those involved with this club.

It would have been great if the club had stayed in the top position, but the fact that they managed to close the gap and even briefly take the top spot, despite the odds being against them, is still a success in its own way.
