We are implementing some changes, which mean that members can no longer sign in with their usernames but instead with their emails.

If you use Facebook, Microsoft, Google, or Apple, this change won't affect you. However, I would strongly encourage all members to ensure their account has a physical password too.

A physical password is one that is encrypted within our database. If you are unable to access one of the above services, all you need to know is your email and that physical password. Over the years, some users have privacy emails provided by services like Apple. Accounts with temporary and false emails will no longer be accepted here.

If you don't wish to be contacted or receive emails, you have the option to opt out and change your notification settings.

However, opting out of email notifications would prevent you from staying informed about what is going on within the Pride of Nottingham community, such as comments and responses. I highly recommend transitioning to grouped emails, which are less frequent.

Recently, a major error caused the Pride of Nottingham site to be down for a considerable amount of time this past Sunday.

In the future, I will set up a way for members to stay updated with events like this, outside of social media for security reasons. I will also ask for permission to send emails to those who want updates in the rare event the site experiences issues. This is to keep members better informed.

I acknowledge that it's not productive to have areas with good intentions that are irregularly updated. I will look into what can be changed to ensure everything is up to a useful standard.

If you have any issues, please contact me. I am more than happy to assist you. Don't feel uncomfortable or worry about wasting my time. I am here to help and ensure that the Pride of Nottingham is accessible to those who wish to contribute.

Regards,
Chris

Pride of Nottingham team.

sounds all good to me.

i dont get why people would join with temporary emails, but then i dont really understand why people join not to contribute. thanks for providing an update @Chris, i do think having a way to keep those who want to know in the loop in situations like sunday. i also get its not best to mention it on social media. i know pon is very transparent but that seems to only play in the hands of idiots.

It’s a great idea to keep members informed if the site goes down, on Sunday I was checking all the PoN social media sites to see if anything had been said, I was worried it was just me. I was so relieved when it came back online.

Thanks @Chris

@Chris. I do like the idea of informing members if the site goes down.Β

I kept checking to see if the site had come back on line, but became concerned that it hadn't after several hours.

It would also be helpful to have an email that the site is back online..

As far as new members are concerned, I would suggest that a provisional membership be granted at first, because there does appear that many new members never contribute, then fall by the way side.

Once a set number of contributions have been achieved, say five, or ten, the membership becomes permanent.

To those who say a temporary membership may put people off, I say I don't think it would.

The PON site is unique amongst available forums & all of us represent & contribute to that uniqueness every single day.

I'm sure there are people out there that want to join & contribute to the site for that very reason. They just need a nudge & plenty of encouragement.

I am going to start compiling permission from members who would like to be notified if a major situation occurs, such as significant downtime. I require authorisation in accordance with GDPR regulations.

I will be sending the updates via the email [email protected] - if you agree, please ensure you add the email as a contact.
There is the possibility that I might send such messages via my own personal account: [email protected] as if our server goes down, so will our mailing handler.

In addition to the email, I will be setting up a Discord server.

Further news of that will come at a later time; it will not be a replacement for our community forums.

A service page will also be created, which will highlight if we are running as per normal with information where news can be sourced to any potential issues.

New members are already placed in a group, where they need to post x amount of times to access regular membership. Once those requirements have been reached, they areΒ  automatically moved into the next group with the ability to perform functions previously limited.

A review of this within the next major update may see a few more restrictions applied to guests, and various levels of benefits to early members as they rank up.

I generally favour communication and motivation that stem from tangible effort and results.Β

Yet sometimes people need pushes, and a different type of encouragement.

These days, all sites commonly use email and a password, so I am fine with that. I have been guilty of forgetting my username on other sites, especially in the past. That's why I joined PON as BromPie; I threw two things together and it's stuck. Thanks for providing these updates. I do agree with everyone that it would be nice to know what's going on when the site is offline.

I'm happy for my email to be added to the list, and I'll add both emails to my contact list. The update and the change to the site login method sound like positive steps forward. I agree that communication is important, and people just need to be engaged.
