Like i said last time... i will have a look at it when i get chance. I've been busy keeping an eye on the kids today whilst they've been painting that box they turned into a puppet show stand and tidying up as usual.

I'm looking forward to the kids puppet show.No doubt it will be as surreal as their jokes.

Sorry Joe but you'll have to wait another week.

We will have to wait a little longer for the next article and the puppet show as you were unwell today.

Stanley Matthews? Tommy Lawton? Dixie Dean? Albert Iremonger?

Trying to think of famous old football players.

Just finished reading your latest article mate. Among other things I found the history on Queens Park rather interesting. Learning that they played a big role in the formation of the S.F.A makes me wonder, is that the reason they still play their home games at Hampden Park - the home of Scottish football so to speak?

I used to wonder why on earth a division 3 club with gates of barely 500 continued to play at such a big stadium but that would make sense now

Posted

You're quite right, James.Queens Park were formed in 1867 and were instrumental in the formation of the Scottish FA

In the early days they were very influential in all things to do with Scottish football.

On one occasion the entire International Scottish team was made up of Queens Park players.

They have won the Scottish Cup the most times apart from Rangers and Celtic, though not since 1893.

Just like The Wanderers, Old Etonians in England and other  'gentlemens ' clubs they stuck to their amateur principles and didn't join The Scottish Football League until 3 years after its formation and are still the only fully amateur club in The Scottish League.

Interesting stuff, a rich history they have there by the sounds of it. They were on TV earlier in the season at home to Glasgow Rangers. About 30,000 Rangers fans and a few hundred Queens Park fans, it was a bit odd lol

The history of Hampden Park Is also fascinating, James.

Did you know there have been 3 stadiums called Hampden..Queens Park played at the first one for 10 years but moved 150 yards when a railway was proposed through part of the terracing. Late in the1890's a request for additional ground space was turned down and Third Lanark took possession of the second ground and renamed it Cathkin Park (They have since gone out of existance)

The current Hampden is now the National Football Stadium of Scotland .

When it was opened  on 31/10/03 it had a capacity of 100,000 and by 1937 this had increased to 150,000 and still holds the record attendance for a European international game.

The current capacity is 52,063 though it did previously have the biggest capacity until 1950 when The Maracana Stadium was built in Brazil..

When Hampden first opened Glasgow had the 3 largest stadiums in Europe.
