video games and parents

This topic is more awareness related I suppose what do parents think to games like Grand Theft Auto and certain games of that genre.

Would you allow you're child to play those games at a age of 16 etc

As I was reading today a guy in America was underaged and played GTA Vice City and one mission was you stole a police car and eliminated Police.

He then went out in the real world stole a police car I believe and killed two police officers and a dispatcher but then when he was caught he said the video game made him do it.

Can a video game really cause people to behave in such a sick twisted manner I mean I have had every GTA and in never even had a criminal record not even now

There was another case when I lived in west brom when another Rockstar game came out called manhunt which was horrific and eventually got banned in the uk.

Which made the game even harder to get but a guy from Walsall played the game and went out an did some horrific act and again said the game told him to do it.

Now the question is simple are video games for our children or is it people with mental issues should not be allowed to play these games.

Personally I play these games and understand what's right and wrong ones a game it's a different world and one is the real world what do you parents and grandparents think.

Would you allow you're children to play games like this with supervision so you could see if it's a suitbale thing as I

think most people want these types of games as all there mates get them aswell and they don't want to be out of the crowd

As far as I'm aware the GTA games are rated 18. Children should not be playing it as some very adult themes crop up (prostitutes, guns and violence).

That said, a video game has never forced anyone to commit a criminal act. Any correlation could easily work the other way - people who get off on violence watch films and play games that cater to this. That doesn't mean the games or films are causing it.

How do you define "mental issues"? Many of us (maybe even most of us?) will suffer from mental illness in our lives. That doesn't mean we're about to go out and kill someone.

The lad who did it in Walsall played manhunt an cut someone's head cause he saw it in the game but he had issues of such that he couldn't tell the difference between reality and a fantasy of a game.

Some people get drawn in to games and can't tell the difference between the two worlds that's all am saying

I don't doubt that there are a few people across the world that commit terrible acts after watching or being inspired by computer games. The real tell is the amount of games sold though.

54 million was the last count a few months ago on GTA V alone. Any act such as you describe is terrible, but as the figures show, the game doesn't influence most. The age rating is a sham unless the whole society embraces it. When teaching a group of 8 yr olds most of them were going home to spend their weekend playing the newly released Call of Duty game, which had come out earlier that week. They were happily discussing missions etc.

Most admitted their parents had bought it for them. When I suggested to the head we send a reminder letter to parents about age ratings etc...he said he had got it for his own son (12yrs old) and he loved it so why bother!

Mental illness (1 in 4 will suffer from it at some point in their lives) is not to be mocked, but the gaming industry shouldn't stop producing such games because of the illness. The illness itself needs to be more publicly aware and treated as any other illness..

Example.

A friend posted yesterday a shot of an advertisement for a halloween party. The poster had a picture of an old hospital bed and the catch phrase welcome to the mental asylum for Halloween.

This goes one of two ways.

1 people say its just a silly advert and really get over yourself and have a laugh.

2 Would it be the same laugh it if had been welcome to the terminal cancer ward?

Just saying.....

As for the number sold its a lot yes I mean I play Xbox one an have always had GTA even underage at times and Manhunt when I was underage never made me comit acts like this.

Also the person tried to sue Rockstar by saying the game told him to do it and influenced him which I think is Bull****.

But I do think if people have a illness they should be treated properly and safely and shouldn't be playing games like this.

And I know ISS Islam militants used GTA as a video to attract members by blowing up American buildings of such on the game .

Also the Norweign I can't Rember his name who killed all those people in a camp and played Call Of Duty to practice his aiming.

Crazy as it sounds but it's true who's to blame the games or Society just a topic so no one get upset we have a opinion and I respect everyone's view

I personally wouldn't let my kids play any games that weren't age appropriate, I think children are pretty suceptible to violence on these games and the more they see the more it becomes the norm and acceptable. Most adults would be able to separate the game from reality but there are some members of society who are vulnerable in this way.

I don't understand how someone can get a kick out of playing violent games or watching violent films, they just make me feel ill but that's me.

I am sure @[member="hissingdwarf"] is right about most parents letting kids play these games and even buying them for the kids but just because the majority do it doesn't make it right.

Won't lie to anyone here in played games underage but I've always understood it's a game it's not acceptable outside of a game.

I just don't believe this crap when people say oh the game made me do it ban the game etc cause everyone has a choice Games like GTA are 18+ for a reason again my view only.

Summed up well, my thoughts interiorly.

I suffer from depression quite badly, I play GTA and many other games of this nature (although very rarely now) - I would never hurt anyone. I wouldn't even excuse someone of lying without proof, though without tooting my parents up, @[member="super_ram"] and @[member="GrannyPie"] are the type of parents who keep you on the straight and narrow. I would love to go all GTA on some people, yet I have a life I want to live.

Not a live wanting to be lead by others.

It really depends on the child and the game. There are alot of under age kids playing adult type games that are playing them for fun and they only see if as that, they only see it as a game and will never implement it in life.. but there is always an exception when a child will see it as real or something they can do in real life. That is why theres age ratings on games. Kids play online with their friends(many they've met through the games/internet), supervision is needed for that on most games as we don't know for sure if the person on the other end of the game is who they say they are.
