How many here gamble via betting?

I very really do now but I do like basketball for betting, which I once managed to work out a system a few years back with contributed £250+ to Christmas. I stopped betting via betfair after I started getting a lot of deals etc - yet I have tried taking up regular betting via bookies.

I'm just not good at it. LOL

I've had the odd flutter on the Grand National but that is about all, it's a mug's game, unless you're a bookie!

When I took redundancy a few years ago a colleague did the same and decided to take up betting as a living, he meticulously spent hours of the day studying form with graphs, flow charts etc on the horse racing, snooker, football matches etc in fact anything that you could bet on, he had a few successes but eventually he has had to give up and get a job.

A word to the wise.

If this thread tuns into a tips one, do not listen to @notts-joe!!!!!

Seriously though, in the first ear of uni we'd forget the lectures and do a pub crawl which had 3 bookies in between. A great way to spend an afternoon as long as you only u spend what you can afford and don't let early wins go to your head!

Not put a bet on in years until Joe  gave us 'hot' tips ( for hot feel free to replace with freezing  x cold) on the Notts manager last year!

Aso took a few free bets on Notts going up this year and on winning the league. Waste of money there then. Thanks Ricardo. Lost me money when you were appointed and again with the performances.

PS

If this is a research thread to find out how many would prefer gambling adsites to the ones now tell him you'd prefer online betting ads to walk in showers for the over 90s!

I would change "it's a mug's game, unless you're a bookie!" to "it's a mug's game, if you're a mug!"

Gambling is one of my big interests, and I could probably write a book on it.  I maintain that a shrewd and disciplined gambler can make a modest profit since the introduction of online betting.  Most of my accounts are funded by the sign-up offers that all bookies give, and if you pick the right ones you can get a very good start and at worst minimise your losses.  There is one reason the bookies win and one reason only - they fix the odds in their favour, typically with a 10 - 15% profit margin.  As a basic example, the toss of a coin is a 50/50 chance, or evens in betting odds.  The bookies won't offer evens though, they would make both options 10/11, meaning that whatever the result they will pay out £100 for every £110 staked.  The tenner they make covers their operating costs and a bit more.  That's where the "mug" punter comes in.  Luckily, there are enough of them for the bookies to offer enhanced terms on certain events, and that's where the shrewd punter gets involved.  I bet frequently, but it's just a hobby to me so I usually only bet in small stakes, usually from £2 to £10.  It's a long time since I had to add funds to an account.

I bet every now and again - usually in 1 - 2 pound bets. Over the last 5 years, I'm in the profit, but I only bet probably once a month, if that.
