The Final

Congratulations to the team who were written off by most of the so called experts. Once again Man City failed  to produce the goods when it mattered most and Wigan,  in my opinion, were the better team over 90 minutes and deserved to lift the Trophy.Nice to see a 'minnow' win.

Going into the game I had a sneeking suspision that Wigan might pull it off. For Man City it was a must win game, they NEEDED something to show for this season wheras for Wigan, the pressure was off. Thought they deserved it on the whole. They played the better football, they were more positve wheras City looked very lethargic, lacked any real creativity or urgency and generally didnt look like scoring.

Not joking, when the ball went up for 3 minutes injury time at the end I said "time for wigan to score yet", and literally as I finished my sentence Wigan scored!

I'm pretty good at this, I missed it. :(

I haven't been feeling myself the past couple of days, struck with flu (or like symptoms) This is the first final I've missed since my early childhood, so I am gutted. Fond memories of watching them at my parents, though I am glad Wigan won. It meant something to them, can't see City being to upset,

I completely forgot about it myself, Glad they won though. Better than a team whos always in competitions.

I settled down to watch it on ESPN (I can't stand ITV) I was disappointed to be honest, I found my attention wandering, it was a bit boring apart from the last few minutes. I'm glad Wigan won.

I also remember the old days when the FA cup final was just about the only live game on TV, the build up used to start about 10am and kick off at 3pm so we were glued to the telly all day and it always seemed to be a red hot day.

Joe - hope you're feeling better soon.

I agree Tony. We used to have a house full, my dad ,grandad and uncles. The women were sent to Derby or Nottingham shopping. The 1st Saturday of May at 3.00pm and as you say , it always seemed to be hot and sunny. The matches seemed to be so much better then, too.

Grandma and me also hope you're much better too, Joe and thanks for passing the 'bug' on to me.

I know what you mean, the tradition seems to have been slowly sucked out of the FA Cup. In my opinion, it's still the best domestic cup competition in the world. Every season the prospect of getting to round 3 and drawing a big club or rival excites me; or for Weymouth the prospect of making the first round proper and drawing a football league side. I don't think I'll ever lose that excitment. At least not for a while.

It just dosent seem right anymore though. The FA Cup final should be aired on the BBC, be the game to bring the curtain down on the English football season and it should kick off at 3pm on a Saturday. It should not kick off in the evening and be aired on ITV or a PPV channel just because the TV channels get more money and higher viewing figures that way.

I saw a tweet yesterday that pretty much summed it up for me which said "If the FA can't be bothered with the tradition of the FA Cup neither can I, turning it off"

Again I almost totally agree with you , James. The F.A.Cup should bring down the curtain on The English football season,  after the league programme has been concluded. The magic of the cup is seeing how the 'minnows' progress. The excitement of watching the cup draw to see who your team has been drawn against. Then the prospect of 'giant killing' or a 'banana skin'. .It's also a diversion from the league programme.

When I was a kid there were very few televised matches so any match was an event. Nowadays ,from August through to May there is hardly a day without at least one live match on TV and then there are the years with the Euros and World Cup.In other words wall to wall football, saturation point. So there's no wonder , with so much choice , that we are a bit disappointed at times.

Regarding the coverage by various tv companies, don't you agree with me that most of the commentators spout utter drivel.

Rant over. :hyper:

I had flu-like symptoms, you had a general bug. Next time I'm ill, I will give you it though.

The F.A cup for me is still the best competition in league competitive football. Other nations, well they can only dream. The history, passion and underdog victories is what makes it special. Still exciting for me but they need to show more games, or, dear I say it... Choose better games?

Tony started it  And no I didn't skip I RAN.

Sorry Tony, I just checked back further and it was JOE who first mentioned the 'flu. :P

Anyway I see there's more denials and speculation regarding who will be Man.C's manager next season.

It seems to me there is as much speculation about various teams and managers as there is about players being transferred.

i only saw the last 20 minutes of the game, but super glad the underdog's won. i love to see the underdog win, as i am sick of seeing other bigger named teams always get pen's etc when they shouldn't etc.

lovely to see, and if i do say so myself, man city were out played!

There was a similar conversation about the FA Cup on the Weymouth FC club forum a few weeks back and someone claimed that EVERY Manchester United FA Cup tie since their 3rd round tie at home to Exeter City in 2005 has been shown live on one TV channel or another. I don't know if thats true but it truly wouldnt surprise me. Who on here was honestly interested in watching Man Utd v Reading in the third round when there were still so many pottential shocks to be had. Still, money talks

Just done my research, it gets worse!

The Exeter game is actually one of only TWO FA Cup ties involving Manchester United which has not been aired on TV since February 1998 and one of only eight of United's last 88 ties since 1993!

When it comes to cup ties I would much rather choose a potential giant killing match any time. When any draw for the cup is made,my first thoughts(presuming these clubs are still involved) are, who have the Rams, Notts and,Alfreton drawn. Then it's which non league club have florest drawn at home and more seriously I look at the giants v minnows and the games involving teams at the top of their respective leagues.
