Do we still need another CB and Striker?

These are two positions which I notice being mentioned in terms of positions that Notts still require, now I was doubtful of Collins making any sort of impact but I would actually welcome him being given a run in the squad - I think he will only grow in confidence and I actually prefer him alongside Jon Stead.

Prior to signing him I would have said we do, yet until Oliver leaves (he's okay but he isn't a goal scorer) I don't think we do require a striker.

I would much prefer to see a ball winner and someone who can absorb pressure, so I still think DM or a CM that can break up the ball would be useful. With Richards making good ground in the development squad - it begs the question would he provide this role? If he could establish himself as a first team regular perhaps so, yet we also have the frozen out and A.W.O.L option in Curtis Thompson (he covers a lot of ground and can be shaped fairly easy IMO). A steady performer until he got injured and since Ricardo left, we just haven't see him much.

Yet I do think its clear we require another rock in the defence, however I am unsure if it should be a CB or RB.

Thoughts?

For a striker, impressed by this player.Go fetch in January.

Right back we have Luther Wildin... an imposing centre back is still needed, wage room if Hewitt and Audel left?

IMO, we do not need another striker or cb, we are doing fine and there is no reason to change it!

when you say we need a ball winner up top, i dunno if you have seen oliver alot but he is the guy for that, not a goal scorer but already has 2/3 assists, he is perfect for what we need, espicially as an impact sub

plus, has collins ever played alongside stead?

@NewarkPie we desperately need another goal scorer, when we struggled in L1 we relied upon Grealish and McGregor to get us out of trouble.

The following season it was all the loan players that held us together and the glue became unstuck after they went, so badly that we plummeted down the table and I for one do not blame Shaun Derry. We should have secured longer deals with certain players, yet so far we are bordering the issue that is if Jon Stead doesn't score or play well - we lack that extra quality.

Yes things are going well, but ultimately the reinforcements would really just give us that additional strength.

We really do need a ball winner in my opinion, its something we lack and are so desperately in need of - I watched West Ham's game the other night and also Spurs, they had a strong holding midfielder that pressed, won, made up ground and covered. Part of why Spurs beat Man City was down to the excellent performance by (I forget his name - haha) but I realised it is what Notts needs. We need a Neal Bishop style player.

This season really should be one we go for, if we hold off, I am sure 'strength' and 'quality' will be mentioned if we do fail to mount on the progress we have made.

reduce the squad a little more, no point having players who have failed to make the bench after Christmas.

best to offload and replace, i do think we should go for another striker. if we can continue the form i see no reason why we cant make improvements and build on. js clearly prefers to back his own players so give him the chance to bring a few more in.

I agree with you @notts-joe, the one player this squad needs is a Neil Bishop, someone to do the donkey work in midfield and break up the play. I still think we need another centre half as well because let's face it, we're all waiting for Hollis to drop a howler and we are definitely one shy in that department if three across the back is the way we are going.

As for strikers I'm not so sure, as the four we have are all different. If Oliver returns to York after his loan spell, we will have to find another similar player as we have nobody else that can give the centre halves a hard time.

Hewitt, Burke, Campbell, Snijders and Atkinson all appear to be superfluous, so can see at least three of them gone in the window to make room, but if we are still there or thereabouts in January, I'm sure JS will be backed.

@Fozzy Agree with you on Hollis .. Hopefully Laing can stay, but his current form is a level below from his first spell at Notts. Hopefully he feels more settled now, and will improve. I hope Richards will grow into a Neal Bishop type player..but accept at the moment, his best position will be wide midfield.

Well if he remains out wide, we do require someone able to do what Bish did this season.

When we went out and signed Gavin Mahon - he offered protection to the defence and linked up play with the midfield. We just need someone who can influence the back, constantly cause the opposition problems and act as a player who mops up the play (breaking it down when possible).

If I was John Sheridan this would be my minimum requirement come January.

I've never really felt Michael O'Connor was the right person for that role, he's much better guiding attacks and in his younger days playing on the wing (or close to it). At Crewe he looked very good, as he did at Scunthorpe United.

He seems to be one of them players who falls short with us.

I still don't think that O'Connor is properly fit, but from what I have seen he is not a defensive midfielder, more forward thinking. We basically don't have a tough tackling midfielder who plays the simple pass in the squad, so it definitely needs to be addressed.

think mansfield showed how much we still require improvement, its fine to get lost when we win but it becomes hysterical when we lose. we need another goal scorer and some defensive cover its that simple.

possibly even a new keeper, i am not convinced by collin.

Why is John Sheridan adamant about sticking with Collin? He is useless.

Because he doesn't seem to rate Loach who is a better shot stopper, but is also lacking in the other departments. Loach is no worse, nor better than Collin in my opinion when it comes to kicking and command (or lack of) of his box, so JS must see something in Collin that we haven't, as I would take Loach's shot stopping ability as the only real plus side of either keeper.
