Recruitment agency criticised for job ads wanting attractive women

Sigh... once again it's a quiet news day in the world, so they cart out these stories designed to elicit a reaction from "body positive" campaigners or first-world problem whingers.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-37573886

A recruitment agency has been criticised for advertising jobs only for "attractive women", as well as specifying bra size.

Matching Models in London describes itself as "an international temp agency for beautiful and talented people".

It advertised for a personal assistant with "a classic look, brown long hair with b-c cup".

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) called it "appalling, unlawful and demeaning to women".

Here are my tuppence on this...

When it comes to jobs, it's about an employer seeking out an employee who boasts specific qualities and characteristics.

If I'm going to apply for an engineer's job, I need engineering experience and qualifications, because otherwise I cannot fulfil the basic duties of my job.

If I'm going to apply for a bouncer's job, I need whatever security clearance - which I assume requires some sort of vetting scheme and tests - and I need to look fairly imposing, not be a wimp, and know a bit about holding my own in a fight because chances are I'll need to.

And if I'm going to apply for a job where I need to be aesthetically pleasing and fit for the benefit of people's eyes, then that's just how it is.

Let's face it, when it comes to things like entertainment, modelling etc, you need to be good looking because that's part of the setting. I've been to nightclubs where they have girls dancing or offering samples of stuff and they're always lookers, because that's the kind of vapid thing they're looking to do, the whole "VIP" thing, to get the punters excited and give an air of glamour - and glamour and looks go hand in hand.

So why the outrage? Can't people accept that there will be others who are taller, fitter and better-looking than them?

If I walked into a modelling agency and said I was interested in applying, I would rather be told up front "sorry mate, you're not tall/good looking enough" (I'm 5'5", receding hairline and hardly an Adonis) than the awkward looks and stuttering as they pass me the form to apply, which I would find a lot more unsettling.

But I accept I'm not cut out for that, and that there will be some right studs out there who are much likely to get ladies' hearts racing and get guys sucking up to them and asking them what gym exercises they do.

What I won't do is kick up a fuss, like this article wants people to do, that it's wrong and demeaning blablabla - you might as well just admit you're envious that there are people better looking than you, and you can't accept it.

Beauty sells, sex sells. And it works both ways.

Get over it!

Although if it gets repealed, you never know, I might quit PON and become a stripper??:lol:

Some things are not meant to be put on social media to be thought about and this is one of them!!!

Political correctness gone mad , the same people that bang on about it seem to forget those qualities being advertised for can make the successful applicant a good career and bundles of money to which they are happy , totally agree @Joe Jones

The EHRC is totally right in my view as young girls these days have enough problems with self esteem without this type of discrimination. See the increasing suicide rate among teenage girls in U.K.

It's a lot deeper than an advert its society in parts , culture , even religion , social media , peer pressure , bullying , all play a part , its tough growing up , things need a perspective , more serious things and I'm not saying advertising in a wrong way isn't as bad , it is , an advert is easily dismissed though , this is deep could go on for hours , don't worry I won't and no offence intended to anyone .

How can companies advertise for attractive males? Double standards if you ask me.

It's like all the crap about certain words like 'babe', people on a mission just to be awkward if you ask me - the more you fight for stupid things like this, the more people will feel bad about themselves. No middle ground at all, its just all offensive.

People just need to be comfortable with who they are , how they look , ect , the others opinions just ignore , simplistic view maybe , treat others with respect and as oneself would want to be treated .

When I saw the headline I thought it was sexism in action TBH. But if you're a model, good looks are part of the job description, so it's legitimate in this case. A model agency has to disciminate based on looks. Or would you like to see life-sized pictures of me in my underpants on every billboard? :D

The problems begin where youthful good looks are desired from women (but not from men) where it has no bearing on your ability to do the job. The frequent use of the attractive young woman / older man combo on TV programmes for instance. I think women are judged more on the basis of their looks. When you're a man it can actually be an advantage to look like the back end of a bus as this gives you "gravitas".

An agency that specifically wants good-looking people for jobs where looks are part of the role is fine and shouldn't be clamped down.

I do however agree that a lot of jobs out there where looks should have no bearing on the role are in fact filled by really attractive girls, and that irritates me.

I can think of at least two bars (one in West Bridgford and one in Nottingham) where the girls working behind the bar are virtually all stunners. Now I'm sure that a lot of men (and ladies who like ladies) appreciate the eye candy, but I can't help but think that it's a bit skewed and that a lot of less attractive girls would have been turned down for the job, and that makes me sad. I don't care what the bar staff looks like, I just want them to be good at serving drinks.

Likewise, two places where I worked (one was an off-licence, the other an office) saw an unnatural ratio of attractive girls hired, which again is unsettling because that's not a case of looks being a requirement of the job, but favouritism because the sleazy, lecherous creep in charge likes to be surrounded by pretty women. If you're working on a computer or handing out drinks, I don't care how easy on the eye you are.

And then there's the fact that I was let go from my last job because they felt there were too many writers on board, but the stunning 21-year-old girl who had just come out of uni and is a much worse writer than me kept her job.

So when you've got an agency that wants good looking people, at least they're being honest and truthful (and it means that good looking people will go for those jobs and leave the non-beauty jobs to the munters like myself) - getting rid of it would just push the practice underground.
