The Handmaids Tale

One of the most traumatic pieces of television ever produced.

Utterly brilliant and utterly terrifying.

Waiting for the final episode next week of Season two, and the rollercoaster it takes you on is immense.

As a person that promotes feminism, I’ve found it difficult to watch, but compelling to see the relationships build and falter.

I read the book for A Level many moons ago and the first season used up most of the available written story, so applause for the writing team to move forwards on their own with new scripts (Even if Margaret Atwood did chip in and help!)

Not one for the children, but one to show them when they are old nough to understand how equality should be in any situation.

The real scary part is some of it rings true. Not to over dramatise it, but for example...the plot line revolves around the subjugation of women in totality. Removing all forms of choice etc...

It also focuses heavily on what it refers to as ‘gender traitors.’ One of the characters is a well respected university lecturer. Great at her job and happy. When the new regime takes over, someone sees she has a photo of her and her wife as her screen saver on her phone. Because she is gay she is thrown out of her job and forced into slave Labour.

Drama? Not quite. Six months ago a university lecturer in the USA was reported to authorities because...she had a photo of her and her wife on her phone. The uni exec board removed her from post and she was blacklisted. Her crime? Being gay in the USA in the current political climate.

That is the scary thing. Yes the programme is hard to watch. Yes the drama is superb, but it is on of those programmes that people should watch at least once. If for no other reason, but to say to their children and their children’s children, I will not let this happen on my watch.

Im not politically preaching. This is one of those things (akin to Schindler’s List) that should be mandatory in the school system at some point. We shouldn’t shy away from those we detest, we should tackle them head on.

I've seen it listed to be watched, yet I haven't yet seen it.

I might try to give the first few episodes a watch, as I don't have much on my 'to view' list. I'm bored of films and there's little to no decent TV shows that I am interested in. I have to add it seems a grim subject but sometimes it can be inspiring and allows to give a level of understanding to a situation you may not have thought of.

I'll report back if I get into watching it.
