  5. To be fair, in games like these you'll either see a tight contest and very few goals or what we did today. It sounded like our width was causing us more problems, very limited support from midfield (going off comments and the radio). There's little negatives with the result or performance because we got what matters and that's the win. Confidence should now be returning to a new high, so hopefully this will be the moment when we can look back and say 'safety was secured here'. A few more good wins and this shouldn't be a question - though I do feel for Newport and Orient who seem quite doomed.
  6. I'm pleased with the first half, though I think we need to double the lead - Jorge Grant did well to put us 1-0. We need to remain steady at the back, so getting a second would help soak up some of the pressure and allow us to play with a bit more confidence. Once Orient start tiring, throw on some pace Nolan and lets get ourselves a good result again. Notts on marching on! COYP!
  7. I feel excited but I have butterflies, very weird feel for today's game. I think I have a lot of optimism that today may confirm which of us will be firmly in the battle. A win for Notts won't make it plain sailing but it will massively assist us - it will also show how are we have come in such a short space of time. COYP!
  8. We have to treat it like any other game, yet in truth it really isn't. There will be a lot of pressure applied to the match, not only in the preparation or to Kevin Nolan, but because we are taking on a team who will need the points just the same as us. I don't expect them to play poorly, I think Orient will go for it and attempt to stop us from playing. Oddly, I think we'd have more favour in winning if we was at home. The fact Leyton Orient will be and considering their recent performances, I think it will make the game more like a local derby or typical cup final. Neither us or them will want to lose, so I am not expecting the game to anything but out of the ordinary.
  9. We have a good balance of experience and youth, players like Jorge Grant have a quality which stands out and I would hope he can play a major part in keeping Notts safe. To me it looks like Nolan is doing a Derry and avoiding selecting himself. He may decide to play the odd game once we have picked up the points needed, as his technical oversight is quite important at this stage. I certainly would like to see him but it's a luxury at this stage. I don't think we have anything to worry about myself. He's brought with him a AM that has experience working with youth, Mark Crossley is still here and he offers what else is needed. Smith and Ameobi are part players, just people who can come in when we needed. In the past I have been harsh on Alan Smith but he does a lot of unseen work on a pitch, people just seem to notice the flaws rather than the praises. It's like when you see his name on the team sheet, 9 out 10 people will instantly say we'll lose but wouldn't the stats suggest we look better with him? I'll leave that to @Elite_pie and Piethagoram to work out (as I am just assuming).
  10. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it was 2-2, I thought I was seeing things! I've seen pictures various friends have taken, it looked like Meadow Lane was jumping and before that (probably not so) but it just shows you how things can change with a bit of luck and a lot of spirit.
  11. It's going to be a tough game for both parties, however if Notts focus on keeping the ball on the ground we should do alright. If Orient make us pick or choose our chances, with the play largely being fought out in the air - well we may struggle. I doubt Orient will play to defend and most likely @Dripsey3 is right about them wanting to be physical. Yet the product side for us would be to frustrate them, cards will come and if we play wisely - there's no reason why we couldn't hit them on the ground. Biggest question for us will be down to performance and motivation, the players need to get something here. Despite Exeter almost turning us over (which would have been disastrous), I do feel we will edge the game. We will need our own enforcers on the pitch who can break up play and let Orient know we are in town. Would Smith fit the bill here? Let him break play up and boss the midfield, assert his role solely as the collector who picks up the opposition attacks. I'm not sure Milson or O'Connor are the type we need to stamp a physical element on the game.
  12. A draw here wouldn't be a bad thing for either club, I suspect we may lose pushing for the win but I just hope the performance is right. We need to maintain the work rate of late, without a repeat or relapse of prior attitudes when it comes to taking to the field.
  13. The atmosphere at recent Notts County home games really has been impressive, especially given the situation we have found ourselves this season. The optimism around Meadow Lane has made both the 2-1 wins over Crawley Town and then Cheltenham Town all the more enjoyable. Performances may require further work, with spells in both games being quite stale at times – the important factor is the fact we are able to win games. It's especially good to see two home wins back to back, and it just goes to show how things legitimately seem to be turning around when you consider that it wasn't that far back that we had lost 10 league games in a row. For me Accrington Stanley is always a difficult game for Notts, I wasn’t overly disheartened by the result but the performance was bad by all accounts. With Kevin Nolan quietly working in his management style and with the January signings at his disposal, it would seem the club has adapted, working as a priority fully focused on making our home form and Meadow Lane a place where we can be entertained. It’s still early days, yet the passion has been restored in the stands and even speaking with fans, you can see an eagerness for the new era to be successful. In our most recent match against Cheltenham Town, it started quite slow and scrappy. Neither side looked all that convincing going forward, however Notts did look the better of the two even early on. With the players working hard on the pitch, chances fell and it created more reasons for our fans to sing their hearts out. The goal made a massive difference, under our new boss Notts does seem like a team wanting to have fun on the pitch. If you took a few moments to look around the stands, you would see just how much of a relief it was that we had scored – not because we desperately require wins in order to secure safety within League Two but because it felt like there is a massive difference around the club. I wrote a tweet after the Accrington game after seeing fans disheartened, and I suggested that perhaps Meadow Lane would be where we found the form to find safety. Certainly, I feel far more optimistic about home games now, than I do about away games. Yet all the remaining games are of huge importance and we don’t need Adam Collin or Mark Yeates to inform us fans of this. In fact, I would hope all the players focus on their performances and when the media come across to enquire about upcoming games – it would be welcome if they let this do their talking. This past part might sound a little blunt, however I am now at the stage whereby I would just want to see safety and continue to enjoy the feel good factor. I don’t fault anyone trying to be optimistic, it’s simply down to the fact I’ve heard it all before. Our next four games will confirm just how important things will be, if Notts can continue to pick up wins and perhaps a draw or two – things will look vastly different. The league table now allows for breathing, hopefully after Exeter, Leyton Orient and even Yeovil Town this will be more so the case. 14. Fingers crossed we can get back the Jon Stead pre injury, he honestly didn't impress me yesterday - yet compared to recent weeks he did do a lot more. I couldn't picture him playing in the states, even League Two is slacker than the MLS.
  15. It was great to be leading 2-0 at half time, plus the win was a massive lift. Both half's wasn't pretty or the best, yet we did enough to warrant the win. I had the feeling of dread, even at 2-0 and I just wanted Forte's effort to go in to add some comfortable but the players fought bravely. Cheltenham looked awful, very static and a team of subbuteo could have caused our team more trouble. When they came knocking at 2-1, I felt like 'here we go' but as @weymouthPIE says Notts don't make it easier on themselves. The game was entertaining, there's always areas that can improve - for me seeing us retaining the ball on the ground would be nice. I didn't quite get why 90% of our clearances went out for a throw in (usually not far from where the ball was struck), this could be nerves or tactics but there was more passion, fight and dedication today than the majority of home games this season. The Kop was almost back to how I remember it can, so full energy and inspiring. Good win overall!
  16. I'm hoping we can get a good performance under our belts, against Crawley we came alive in the second half and I'd just like to see Notts play consistently for both halfs. If we can create chances, we should score but I do feel nervous (almost like I am expecting to be disappointed). Will Nolan start? I think today could be a good chance to see what he offers. Give some of the faster loanees a chance, perhaps even Grant in the middle? We need to make sure we have the quality to go forward. The backwards passing tends to take its toll, so hopefully inspiring the kop will make today all the more enjoyable (if the rain and performances come).
  17. I was either in year 5 or 6 during this season (I think it was the latter). First real season where I had witnessed Notts play well and actually looked much better than the majority of teams in any of the divisions. I mean I saw them beat teams when we was in the old Division 1 (Championship) but we wasn't a team which was flying - bar one year when we was near the top. Yet this campaign I thought we would be able to push on, then we all know what happened.
  18. Glad he enjoyed his time, I was quite sceptical of his arrival but I think if he was given more chance we may have seen better from him. He shown class in spells, so I'm glad he enjoyed it. Wished we could have gotten him back TBH.
  19. Good article Lewis! Michael O'Connor is a decent player but where he's gone wrong this season, I don't know. I was encouraged by his arrival but I think the spine of the squad goes missing and I would say we lack leadership on the pitch.
  20. I wouldn’t really say that I was surprised to learn about the departure of Stanley Aborah. That said, I did value what he offered and although some believe that he was difficult to manage, I’m not quite sure I would agree. Who knows for sure? However, from his opening debut after trialling with Notts, Aborah shown that he had some spark about him. In games where the Magpies desperately lacked that certain quality, Aborah was there to provide it and until Jamie Fullarton came around, it was really hard to see our midfield without his presence. There’s no doubt that a player of his quality would be asking for game time, yet it did come as a shock when we all learned why he wasn’t playing. Whilst the local media speculated it was due to his poor defensive attributes, something else I would largely debate wasn’t fair (who exactly did defend well?) as the entire team was largely poor and for this reason I always felt he stood out unfairly because he tried. Yet it emerged back at the start of March 2016, that the then 28-year-old Belgian midfielder had ‘asked to leave Notts because he felt he wouldn’t play’, this was after being frozen out of the squad. The Belgian said: “To me it's not a difficult situation. He came in. I was dropped. Therefore I asked him if he wanted me to leave. I said I don't have to leave but if I could find a club it's fine by him.” He also accused the then manager Jamie Fullarton of lying about his reasons not to include him in the starting 11. “The question gets asked to him after a game he doesn’t say this. First he said he makes informed decisions or something like that. Then he said I’m not available. That wasn’t true. He said I was ill, for the York game.” I genuinely believe that the majority of Notts fans assumed this would be the end his time at the club, yet he would still go on to feature for the Magpies. This time around he hasn’t featured in the squad as a starter since the FA Cup clash against Boreham Wood, which we won 2-0, but he did come on in the 2-0 away defeat against Grimsby Town in the 83rd minute. I hadn’t realised this, so it does make sense that we would allow him to depart – it also eases the disappointment because it’s hard to say he would feature under Kevin Nolan. It’s debatable if things may have been different if we had included Aborah, I guess it's beside the point now but watching him play was generally exciting. His departure makes me curious as to why other players haven’t been released? Yet that might be explained by if he had requested to be released. Will Genaro Snijders be next? Can anyone actually say when it was he last appeared in the squad? This is something else I don’t actually recall. Perhaps he will get his chance finally under Nolan unlike Aborah? Notts do require pace on the wing and he does offer that. If we can inject forward movement into the squad, perhaps the wing would see more time to pinpoint the perfect pass? As it would seem the recent arrivals offer the lack of pace the squad has been missing. The departure of Aborah may not be best news for some fans, considering the restraints of the fair play rules – I would imagine the decision on who to allow him to leave would be difficult. I, and all of us at PON, want to wish him all the best with his career. 21. Very busy deadline day, ah! Who remembers the days when we signed last minute players because it seemed nobody wanted to sign? Well it looks like the handicap hasn't effected Nolan or Hardy. Pleased with the arrivals overall, I just hope they contribute to lifting us up the table!
  22. A Yeovil friend says this lads got speed to burn, so if he's got skill in his locker - hopefully we may see some direct football (rather than passing backwards all the time).
  23. I wonder if Mark Crossley will be working with our keepers or if him and the new AM will take Nolan's management instructions in games? We should have some fire in midfield with Kevin playing.
  24. It wasn't pretty or textbook stuff but it will do. I felt actually quite entertained today, though defensively we did very well and looked comfortable. The attack left questions within the first half, however it came together when we had chances. Our first goal was pretty scrappy but they all count! I didn't think it was going to go in myself. When they equalized, I felt very down and it became obvious that the players was gutted. Yet several players, Campbell and Forte noticeably started chasing everything. Michael O'Connor did well, we wouldn't have won if it wasn't for him and it was a steady performance. I think he became injured from taking the first free kick, as I noticed him pulling faces and generally feeling around his feet/ankles and leg. When the ball went out for the second time, he looked like 'do I really have to take this' and then just whacked the ball in. Left feeling over the moon and I really enjoyed speaking to all the old crowd, I wished I had time to speak with @Northants Pie and @magpiejue but I will sometime. I was interviewed by BBC Radio 4 today, not the best but I felt nervous. Happy overall mind! Great win. COYP!
