  3. Totally agree @Wheelbarrow repair man Watching the old matches from the 60s, 70s, and 80s ball playing sides like Leeds United under Revie, Liverpool under Shankly, Tottenham under Nicholson, Ipswich under Robson & Forest under Clough. All these sides didn't expect the goalkeeper to continually distribute the ball like they do today, they kicked the ball upfield the vast majority of the time. I think that teams now play what we used to call the continental way, where teams always play out from the back. I still think there is a merit to playing the old way some of the time to keep the opposition guessing. I don't know whether you've noticed, but if it is nearing the end of the match, and a team is a goal behind they tend to go long anyway to save time rather than build from the back. I also think that the large number of foreign coaches have been a big influence on the increase in the continental style of play we now see dominating the English game.
  4. @menzinho I get what you are saying and Slocombe does have the experienced but you can never say that he looks solid between the sticks & he's not comfortable on the ball. Someone in their late 20s or early 30s who is a GOOD all round goalkeeper, who is comfortable playing as a goalkeeper sweeper and can distribute the ball. That's what Notts need. The Club has high hopes for Brooks and he may be ready to take the reins in another 12 months. I think it's worth the cost to pay for a type of goalkeeper how I've described, because it is such an important position nowadays.
  5. Notts do lots of research and check lots of stats before they sign a player so Dan must have impressed Notts on paper. He most probably didn't adapt to the way Notts played. He never looked convincing and he never shone on the pitch for me. It just happens that way sometimes with a player at one club, then moves & looks a different player at another club. I do wish him luck at his new club and I will be keeping an eye on him next season to see how he's getting on.
  6. @Wheelbarrow repair man I agree with you. At the end of the day Notts supported him and helped him through his long term injury, so Notts did all they could. He could have stayed with Notts and fought for a place, especially considering what Notts did for him, but if he wants to move on so good look to him. Notts will find a good replacement, I'm sure of that, who will be new and full of commitment to Notts.
  7. Welcome to the PON community @Jake
  8. The role of the goalkeeper has changed compared to what goalkeepers were expected to do in the past. I can remember the likes of Gordon Banks, Peter Shilton, and Ray Clemence plying their trade and being lourded for their brilliance. They were fantastic shot stoppers, had quick reflexes, could jump and catch the ball from crosses and Corners. The vast majority of the time they kicked goalkicks & punted balls to the halfway line when they had to clear the ball, they only passed or handed the ball to a player very occasionally. Now, in the modern game, goalkeepers are expected to act as a sweeper, be able to pass to players accurately up to 50 yards & have very good ball skills. Goalkeepers only hoof the ball upfield if they are under extreme pressure. They are expected to have the ball skills of a defensive midfielder. That's where the goalkeeping coach comes in. What do my fellow PON colleagues feel about goalkeeping coaches, are they really necessary in the modern game, or would you prefer goalies just concentrate on the job they are supposed to do, shot stopping, commanding their area, catching crosses and corners, & just clearing the ball when they have to?
  9. Is the Goalkeeping coach the most underappreciated member of the technical team? The Goalkeeping Coach is a relatively new position & many fans are unaware of their importance to a modern football team where the role of the goalkeeper has changed to what they were expected to do in the past. Notts have a Goalkeeping Coach and he has become a very important member of the Coaching team. The following article discusses the role of a Goalkeeping Coach & how they work within modern Coaching Teams. https://goalkeeper.com/news-and-media/exclusives/post/the-goalkeeper-coach-underappreciated-mastermind
  10. Of course @Wheelbarrow repair man I think that Notts could improve on their communication sometimes, but that is down to the Club, not Stuart or his backroom staff. I agree that there should be more press conferences from the Head Coach during the summer especially when a new player has arrived. It is great that Notts have their X & Facebook account and communicate through those mediums with the fans, but I think they could communicate more through their U tube account too. I've said before on other threads that I prefer that there be a Manager of a Football Club that deals with the things a Manager used to do, & have his Coaches, his backroom staff, recruitment staff & scouts answer to him. And yes, it's great to debate on PON, respecting other opinions, I love it.
  11. What a win this is over the British number one.

  13. @Wheelbarrow repair man I don't think that Stuart Maynard has "faded into the background" I am sure Stuart has taken a holiday with his family, but as we all know, discussions have been taking place between the coaching teams and management about new players and their plans for next season. Stuart and his coaching team can take a large part of the credit for the addition of these two new defenders for starters. Stuart has already talked about how he felt when he joined the club and the dissapointing results that followed. It's time to put all that behind us now and look forward to what's going to be an exciting season. Stuart has the confidence of the owners and I don't think that the owners are planning to appoint a director of Football. I am happy with Stuart Maynard and so are the club. Continued talk about Neil Warnock returning is pie in the sky. Neil's footballing philosophy is not the same as what the owners want at Notts. Any possible Director of Football would have to believe in the type of football that the Club believes in. We all need to get behind the Owners, Stuart Maynard and the players for what promises to be an exciting time to be a Notts supporter.
  14. Emma Raducanu reaches her first WTA Quarter Final on Grass at Nottingham.
  15. Agree @Wheelbarrow repair man I good experienced thirty something goalkeeper would fit well into this side right now. I remember you mentioning Kaspar Schmeichel in another thread. Someone with his type of experience is what Notts need right now. Another goalkeeper who's contract runs out in July is 34 year old Wigan goalkeeper and former Man Utd player, Ben Amos.who has plenty of experience around the Leagues.
  16. Take a look at the newly completed Fan zone, The Nest. It looks great.
