Tyrese Hall to Notts
Looks like another promising youngster. Tend to agree that we have a plethora of midfielders, but hopefully, we might have another gem on our hands. Just how you fit Luker, Hall, Iorpenda and Norburn alongside the established group is a challenge, to say the least.

Where are they now : George Abbott
Interesting move - a little odd to me that it’s another “season long” loan. Some Clubs in the Prem seem reluctant to enable players to develop more within their own environment & top players etc. I’d suggest that in most other European leagues a player like Abbott might get a few months out on loan then work back at his own club and get opportunities, at least in fringe competitions and the odd “squad” appearances with the first team. Then move him up a to a higher level loan for a spell. Too many seem scared of youth and think a player needs to be 20 before they get a chance. Contrast that with Arsenal & Liverpool’s star 15 & 16 year olds. They are prepared to take the risk, it appears. Abbott has huge potential, he’s talented, his attitude is spot on, he’s a battler - worth “fast tracking”, surely? In any event, I wish him well and will follow his progress accordingly.

Luton's Luker to Notts
Luker sounds like a direct replacement for Abbott. If he’s 75% as effective he’ll be a useful addition. Will he make the starting XI tho’? Time will tell.

Keanan Bennetts to Notts.
If he provides a bit more guile and physicality than Jarvis then he’s a decent signing in my view. Need to see him in action before attempting to judge/assess him tbh.

Where's All The Money Gone?
The difficulty for owners is that fans don’t measure “success” by off field investment. The only factors that matter are results and performances, which are significantly impacted by the quality of player recruitment. As a fan for 60 years I’m not bothered about padel courts or The Nest but I understand that they are helpful as income generators. The Club infrastructure and back room appointments are of little consequence to me either - but if they aid player fitness and development that’s good too. I’m not sure how you equate all the variables and assess which are working effectively & which are not. That is some conundrum. I, like most fans I believe, will judge on performances, results & league position. The rest, to paraphrase Sir Jimmy, is gossip.

Who Needs to Step Up for Notts This Season?
Grant is a class act - massively misused by Maynard. He isn’t a wide player nor a defensive midfielder. He’s creative, astute with good, quick feet and an eye for a pass. He can shoot too yet Maynard hardly ever let him get near the box! He’d walk into any other L2 team, so he should be a regular starter in ours. Tsaroulla is another, if fit, he’s highly useful and needs to played in the right position, not wide right one game, left back another then filling in as a sub, if needed. He’d start for me but I’ve yet to see Cotter - I guess you don’t/can’t play them both together unless Jones is missing. Hoping Cotter, Dennis, Iorpenda and Norburn live up to expectations too for that matter. Re: the thread title - I should add that the player who most needs to “step up” is Palmer. Hopefully, Paterson won’t want him passing sideways and backwards 45 times before he actually makes a telling pass and can sharpen up his first touch diver keep the ball moving rather than dwelling on it.

Is there something wrong with our club?
I sincerely hope you are right about that. Recent activity suggests we are “in a good place” at the moment. A couple of decent results certainly helps enormously. The key issues will be, how long do the new guys take to settle in, can we create and take enough chances and where will we be after 8 - 10 games. We’ll have a far better idea about how it’s all shaping up by early October.

Nottingham Evening Post Coverage
The quality of local sports journalism generally has been on a downward trajectory for a very long time. The NEP stopped being impartial and balanced regarding Notts & the other lot years ago. I stopped reading it at least 15 years ago. The old FP was fantastic - the stop press even covered any late goals most of the time too. All local league tables and match reports were included too, remember the MAA, Notts Alliance, Amateur League etc?

Home kit out now
Agreed, very impressive shirt which looks like traditional b&w stripes with up to date collar, shoulders & sponsor’s name discretely displayed not overwhelming the shirt. Excellent stuff Notts.

New keeper signs
It wasn’t that long ago that he was looking pretty impressive at Derby. Looks and sounds like a quality signing, let’s hope he lives up to his billing. Certainly gives me a little more confidence, at this stage, as we prepare for the season to start. Good move in my view, well done Notts.

All Quiet on the Transfer Front
There seems to be a rumour floating around that we might re-sign Miller. Seems odd, as we released him but maybe the prospect of 1st team football might, perhaps, change the dynamic? Never seen him play in a match but he looked pretty useful in training - particularly set piece and shooting drills - at that “Lifeline Trsinibg Day” last season. He’s big & commands the box, his distribution looked swift and competent & his previous experience suggests he’s a decent keeper. Yes, he’s a risk but that applies to most signings.

Is there something wrong with our club?
I share those sentiments - entirely. As an eternal optimist regarding all matters Notts, this is the least optimistic I’ve felt at the start of a new season for a very long time. Let’s hope we get off to a bright start. I don’t see us scoring goals for fun or being the most scintillating team for a while - but - some entertainment, flair and points in the board will dramatically improve things.

The Grant Paradox
I’d seen Grant before he came to Notts and I don't think we’ve seen the best if him yet. Technically, he’s a good footballer - good feet, lovely flicks and touches, the quick passing game suits genus style. I attended the Lifeline ‘training day event’ prior to Bradford away last season & Grant looked the sharpest and most creative player. Plus, they did a passing & shooting drill and he was firing screamers past Miller. He “scored” far more than Jones & McGoldrick combined tbh. So, ok - it was training - but there’s a good player in there & we need to use him further fussed, not wide and not as a combative midfielder. In the right, balanced, team I believe he would highly useful.

Paterson post Stuttgart
Paterson can certainly talk sense and he gives the impression that he’s fully aware of where the problems are and what solutions are required. If this translates to improved performances and good results - happy days. I’m prepared to give him, and the new players, time to develop a style & identity. If we are not settled and showing promise by Oct then I suspect that discontent will surface. We need a good start for many reasons. We’ll see what happens. I’m usually more optimistic at this stage but there are some genuine concerns with the set up, all the new faces on & off the pitch and the uncertainty following the loss of Abbott, McGoldrick & Bass.

YoopEyes welcome to PON
Thank you for the warm welcome. I’m not entirely @new” - I’ve been absent from this forum for a while but used to regularly contribute to the natch chat but under a duffer t e.mail address and user name. My old account “died” and my e.mail also became defunct. I’ve been supporting Notts for over 60 years, many of those as a season ticket holder, former Patrons Club member, Vice President and I now enjoy home games from the “prawn sandwich” section - in the Directors Suite. For many years I posted on NCM but avoided it for the last 3 or 4 years due to a few posters dictating and taking it over with political threads rather than football related ones. Now cutscenes to have withered on the vine and us no more - so I’m happy to be back here. A bit long winded but that’s my quick intro.

Should Notts consider having a new Club Captain?
Difficult situation to resolve. Palmer was certainly the “favoured” option for Maynard and he is a respected member of the squad. I don’t know if he fits the “Paterson mould” in respect of playing style and approach. Will he be a regular starter? I’m not sure he is incisive or creative enough tbh. I prefer the more robust, assertive style of leader - Turner was an inspirational captain and he possessed a bit more character & personality for my money. Of the established players I’d have thought Bedeau would be ideal but McDonald also has tge right attributes, should he be a preferred first team candidate.
