Richard Dryden pulls no punches on "abysmal" and "heartbreaking" Notts County season

Joe Jones

Notts County assistant manager Richard Dryden has given a scathing assessment of the season just gone, describing it as “abysmal” and “heartbreaking”.

The Magpies have finished the season in 17th place, losing half of their 46 games and experiencing a number of heavy defeats, including a 5-0 thrashing at Mansfield Town and a 5-0 loss at home against Carlisle United in the final game of the season.

In addition three managers have been and gone, while Ray Trew has put the club for sale but has not yet been sold amid a flurry of media speculation over new owners.

Dryden said: "Personally I'm glad it's finished because when you know you can't win promotion or get relegated, it's been tough to keep players motivated.

"It's best to draw a line under this season. It's been really disappointing this season. We've let everybody down.

"I am hurting massively. I came up here as a young lad with Neil Warnock and his ethic was work hard for each other.

"I have been up here ever since bar four or five years and Notts is a club close to my heart. It is heartbreaking to see what is getting turned out some times.

"We've been short on certain areas. We've not hit the ground running. If we've been scoring goals, we've been conceding them.

"If we are not conceding, we aren't scoring. The quality just hasn't been there. Hard work isn't enough.

"Everybody at the club has to take responsibility. We've all got to be pushing in the same direction and aim for much higher because this season has been abysmal."

It's been heartbreaking seeing fans worrying over things we shouldn't be experiencing really, the days of limited resources and pulling together as a community are over - there's no need for us to save the club but basics must start being perfected. We need to be able to forward, I am sure the majority will get on board for next season in various ways but we need to learn.

Concerns for relegation should be dismissed by our pre-season approach, the players we sign and how we start the season.

Good luck to whoever comes in.

In describing Notts as “abysmal” and “heart-breaking" RD is being polite as I am sure he would agree If he had paid to watch the complete shambles this year. Placing the blame firmly on the players, he seems to have missed the fact that their is very little right at ML at the moment.

I can agree that, "Everybody at the club has to take responsibility", but then says, "it's been tough to keep players motivated."  Their job is to play football, and with the players we have and the current standard in league 2, they only need to be proficient to be in the top half on the table, yet it is totally beyond them. How many other trades would management allow its work force o produce a shoddy product, then dismiss it as one of those things and look to next year.

Have we really had 3 managers this year? I get the impression that the team is run by committee with no one person holding the reigns, with the power to lead us.  I don't feel we have had a true manager for sometime now.

We can chop the head off the beast but the monster wont die, it will just grow another head.  M Cooper has decided it wont be his, and I don't blame him.

While RD is bang on with his comments, we've been reading similar comments from various players and managers for quite some time but nothing changed. It's too late now. Next season I want to see a well-organised and motivated team. The club, management and players owe us something.

Agreed, but I get the feeling that there are major flaws in the way and by whom the club is being run. A change of manager is only directing attention away from these problems. We will never have a club that works as one - a team - until we have a manager with the authority and skill to lead. It seems clear that this is not the case at ML.

Only when he has the power to manage, without interference and with his own players,  should he be held accountable for our results.
