Match Report: Nick Tsaroulla and David McGoldrick on Target as Notts Beat Gillingham

PON_News

Notts County secured a battling 2-1 victory over Gillingham at Priestfield Stadium, extending their impressive start to the League Two campaign.

First-half goals from Nick Tsaroulla and David McGoldrick gave the Magpies a commanding lead, but a late strike from Joseph Gbode set up a tense finish.

The visitors controlled possession with 56% but had to weather periods of pressure from Gillingham, who registered four shots on target compared to Notts County’s three.

In a feisty contest, both sides racked up the fouls, with the Magpies committing 11 and receiving four yellow cards, while Gillingham were penalised 13 times and had five players booked.

Stuart Maynard’s side came out with attacking intent, and their early pressure paid off in the 12th minute. Jodi Jones, a constant threat down the wing, delivered a pinpoint cross that found Nick Tsaroulla, who expertly steered placed the ball past Glenn Morris to give Notts the lead.

The visitors continued to push forward, forcing Gillingham into some last-ditch defending. Just before the half-hour mark, McGoldrick doubled the advantage. The experienced forward took advantage of a defensive mistake, scoring from close range after a good play by Matt Palmer and Charlie Whitaker.

Gillingham struggled to break down a resolute Notts defence in the first half, with their best effort coming from Asher Agbinone, whose long-range strike was comfortably saved by Alex Bass.

Neil Harris made a change at the break, bringing on Joseph Gbode to add more attacking impetus. The Gills came out with greater intensity, and Armani Little tested Bass with a powerful effort from distance in the 62nd minute.

Notts made substitutions of their own, with Kellan Gordon and Curtis Edwards introduced to freshen up the midfield, while William Jarvis replaced Jones.

Despite their control of possession, Notts were given a scare in the 80th minute when Gillingham pulled a goal back. Little whipped in a dangerous corner, and Gbode rose highest to guide a header into the bottom corner, setting up a nervy final 10 minutes.

Gillingham pushed for an equaliser, with Sam Gale’s late header forcing a save from Bass, but Notts held firm. The visitors had a couple of opportunities to kill the game off, with McGoldrick seeing a shot blocked and Matty Platt heading narrowly over from a corner.

The final whistle sparked celebrations among the travelling Notts fans, who saw their side withstand a spirited second-half display from Gillingham. The Magpies’ ability to take their chances proved the difference, as they made it back-to-back league victories.

With another three points secured, Stuart Maynard’s men continue their push at the top end of League Two, showing resilience alongside their attacking quality.

That was a proper battling win! First half, we looked so comfortable, great movement, solid passing, and two well-taken goals. Second half, Gillingham came at us strong, and we had to dig deep. Loved seeing McGoldrick take his chance, his composure makes such a difference up top. Bass had a solid game, and the defence held up well despite the late pressure. Definitely need to manage games better towards the end, but overall, a fantastic away result!

Brilliant result against a team that can make games difficult despite their league position. We have to be happy with the three points.

Gillingham pushed hard late on, but our defence held firm. Big away win, keep the momentum going!

Excellent first half, but we made it difficult for ourselves in the second! We came out flying, controlled possession, and looked sharp in attack. Nick Tsaroulla took his goal brilliantly, and David McGoldrick’s finish showed exactly why he’s so important to this team. Really good link-up play between Palmer and Whitaker too.

Second half was more of a scrap. Gillingham came at us and made it tough, but we defended well enough to see it out. That late goal made it nervy, but credit to the lads for keeping their heads. Bass made a couple of big saves, and we had chances to put the game to bed. Huge three points away from home.

It's the result we needed to maintain our form. Yes, a late goal for Gillingham, but it's a spirited performance by a team who is delivering right now. Nick Tsaroulla finding the net is just perfect. I am pleased for him because he always works hard to make an impact. We should take this as a stepping stone towards greater success, ensuring we carry this momentum forward into our next matches. Each player's dedication is truly inspiring.

Hard-fought win, but we deserved it! We looked the better side first half, controlled the ball well and took our chances. Tsaroulla’s header was excellent, and McGoldrick’s goal came at the perfect time. Gillingham were much stronger second half, and that late goal made it a bit too nervy for my liking.

Fair play to our defence, though, they stood up to the pressure and saw it out. Bass was solid, and I thought Palmer was outstanding in midfield. Need to be a bit more clinical when we get chances to kill the game off, but overall, really happy with another away win.

Even though they are struggling at the moment, I still regard Gillingham as a good side, so this Notts win was so important. It's a win that wouldn't have happened last season.

The Notts first half performance was up there with the best we've seen from them this season. Notts totally dominated Gillingham & could have easily been 4:0 up at half time.

In the second half Notts had a lot more defending to do but they held firm. Being able to hold firm, is an additional trait that Notts simply did not have last season.

I think that we have to give lots of credit to Stuart Maynard & his coaching staff for the Notts transformation this season.

Excellent result away from home against a team that is fighting for every point. There are no easy games in League Two, but when you play as Notts did yesterday, it does make it easier to ensure the points are picked up. David McGoldrick has become a solid part of the team this season. He is a major part of what makes us play well and maximises the points we pick up due to his superb presence.

Solid win for Notts. The first half saw some good football with quick passing, good movement, and two goals. McGoldrick looked sharp, and Tsaroulla was strong. The second half was different, with Gillingham stepping up. We had some struggles, especially after their goal. We need to manage games better, but defensively we held our ground. Bass made a couple of key stops, and Platt was solid at the back. Nice to see us securing wins under pressure. Another three points on the board. The team is getting stronger each week.

As long as we keep winning, we’re heading in the right direction, and results are what matter most. The second-half performance was strong, and I don’t think we can fault the effort. No team is going to make it easy for us, and we have to earn every win. If we keep this level of commitment, we’ll stay on track for a successful season.

once notts does get to grips with how teams play and manages to create chances, normally the performances are very good. its when we struggle to score, that was not the problem against gillingham. first half was very entertaining and david mcgoldrick could easily have gotten a brace. we caused gillingham a lot of headaches, as did they in the second half.
