Huge Ring of Galaxies Discovered

Scientists at the University of Central Lancashire have discovered a gigantic, ring-shaped structure in space.

It is 1.3bn light-years in diameter and appears to be roughly 15 times the size of the Moon in the night sky as seen from Earth.

Named the Big Ring by the astronomers, it is made up of galaxies and galaxy clusters.

They say that it is so big it challenges our understanding of the universe.

It cannot be seen with the naked eye. It is really distant and identifying all the galaxies that make up the bigger structure has taken a lot of time and computing power.

This discovery by scientists at the University of Central Lancashire is truly mind-boggling. The Big Ring, a gigantic structure in space, is challenging our understanding of the universe. It’s fascinating that such a large structure, made up of galaxies and galaxy clusters, exists, contradicting the cosmological principle that all matter is spread evenly across the Universe.

@Burnz3r0 It is very hard to imagine how immense the Universe is.

The simplest way of describing how immense it is, is to compare the Earth to the size of an Atom and the Earth represents the size of the Universe. An Atom is too small to be seen even by the most powerful microscopes, so that miniscule size just puts things into context.

By the way, the new discovery is truely awesome.

I initially thought this was a thread on Galaxy chocolates :rollonfloorlaughing:

when they showed the images of this on the news i could not even see what they were talking about. i can only see it when you highlight the ring, so no wonder we have been missing it for decades.

its actually quite a cool discovery.

Just like @liampie, I watched a news segment on the BBC News and couldn't see anything of interest.

It just looked like stars orbiting like normal, maybe a larger amount than what you would see if you look for yourself using a telescope but nothing that made me jump up and declare it as amazing. The news is pretty cool, as for the talk about changing how we inspect and look at the universe the obvious right decision would be to use anything that might give a greater understanding.
