Tonight Bayer Leverkusen saved their unbeaten record to draw with Roma 2:2 and win their 2leg semi final 4:2 on aggregate.

So they now meet Atalanta in the Europa League final on the 22nd May.

They have now gone 49 games unbeaten in a record breaking season.

It's incredible what they've done this season and what a job Xabi Alonso has done at this club. Taking them from 2nd bottom when he took over part the way through last season to going on the longest unbeaten run in European football history in his first full season in charge. The amount of last goals they have scored all season is ridiculous they just don't quit. It's remarkable.

If Bayer Leverkusen does go unbeaten in their remaining 4 games then surely it has to go down as the most incredible season by a team of all time. There's nothing like it.

Do have a question about it though. Their last game of the season is the DFB Pokal Final. If they end up losing on penalties then does it still count as going the whole season unbeaten or does it get counted as their first and only loss of the season? It might sound like a silly question but the only reason I'm asking is because there are stats going round about the fact Rodri has still yet to lose a competitive game for club and country in 70+ games despite losing to Real Madrid on penalties in the CL.

Quoted from Google.

Statistical record

A shoot-out is usually considered for statistical purposes to be separate from the match which preceded it.

In the case of a two-legged fixture, the two matches are still considered either as two draws or as one win and one loss.

In the case of a single match, it is still considered as a draw.

@Robbie

I find it so bizarre because if that is the case and it is deemed a draw how can they say a club has won the cup. So if Bayer Leverkusen lose on penalties, they're unbeaten all season with one less trophy it just doesn't make sense.

@KB1862

Put it another way.

Last seasons penalty shootout in the National League playoff final. For statistical purposes the match up till the end of extra time is regarded as a draw between Notts and Chesterfield ending 2:2

I agree it is bizarre that the penalty shootout is regarded separately.

News about Bayer Leverkusen

Leverkusen lost their unbeaten record this season when they lost in the final of the Europa League to Italian side Atalanta 3:0 last Wednesday.

On Saturday, Leverkusen got back to winning ways when they beat FC Kaiserslautern 1:0 in the German Cup final.

So it's the League and Cup double for Leverkusen in a remarkable season for them. Just one defeat all season is a great achievement for a side that has broken the Bayern Munich stranglehold on German Football.

I don't think anyone really had them down as contenders this season, so to do the double in such style is all the more amazing.

Sadly, they reserved their worst game for the Europa League final. They didn't deal with Atalanta's high pressing at all and were second to every ball. They were down to ten men for the majority of the cup final.

With Bayern appointing a manager untested at the highest level, next season may be a chance for Alonso to emulate Klopp and hold onto the title.
