Fotheringham’s Academy Experience

Really interesting video on the Magpie Player, it focus on Mark Fotheringham speaking about some time he spent with youngsters. Do you have a subscription? You can view it here

He basically talks about how he's doing his level 2 coaching badges, that he spent time shadowing some of the junior coaches and Mick Leonard. He mentioned he's very lucky to be able to lean on Mick because of experience, that youngsters absorb so much information and that he's excited. @ivansneck he even mentioned about how it's interesting to compare how the Germans focus on youngsters.

It received some negative comments and some jokes, yet I personally wouldn't knock it.

For starters he seemed genuinely interested, it would inspire our youngsters (I still recall visits at school by first team members and even Forest's who were mainly reserves). It makes you think "Hey, I can do this!", for any youngster it can be a great confidence boost. It's also good for him as a player, if he takes up coaching it will only benefit those around him.

What are your thoughts?

At least he values the visit, he understand how the younger players will relate and I just thought it was a smashing bit of news.

Good to see it covered on the MP.

Seems like a sensible route for any player hitting that certain age to take. All the youngsters will surely benefit from a pro who is still in (unfortunately in my opinion!!!) with a chance of first team football.

I'm sure Mark with get a lot out of it and I am certain the youngsters will benefit too, good for him.

I think it was just a one off, though it's encouraging regardless.

Fotheringham's a funny player, I think with better players around him who can 'pick up' or 'sweep'. He might become the player we signed originally, I don't dislike him but I just wished he could perform like he did when earning his contract. I think it's more about him making sure he continues his career, so working with youngsters and getting his badges should help him.
