The TikTok ban has come into force today in the US.

Is this good or bad for free speech?

TikTok is back in the United States.

This is just a taster of the nonsense we can expect. Banning Tik Tok was Trump's idea as it was Chinese-owned (nothing to do with free speech), and the ban has taken years (the whole Biden administration) to get through. In the meantime, Trump has a meeting with the Tik Tok CEO and suddenly it's OK again. Anyone who can get chummy with him and doff their cap enough can get their way.

As for Tik Tok itself, I don't have any view. It's one social media platform among many others and it's not one I've involved myself with.

To be banned for 12 hours? Remarkable....

Companies have been banned from using Google services, I get security concerns but prove it. Also, as for free speech, I don't think the ban denies anyone free speech because it's an app and to limit speech about it, would include the inability to speak of displease about it being banned in the first place. It's a platform, it's typical of America to act paranoid. Tiktok is a plague, it's awful and has such the raise has seen Facebook, Instagram, Youtube and X pick up short video formatting.
