Visited the Supermarket this morning to get some bags of flour as there may be a bread shortage due to action from the farmers.

I couldn't help but notice that food prices continue to rise. A pack of nine Cadburys chocolate bars have gone from a pack of nine to a pack of seven but still the same price £3

Also a bag of toffee have gone up from £1 to £1:35 a bag. Each individual sweet appears smaller too.

And the bag of  Chocolate raisins are now £1:50 & they were just £1 till recently.

So it's not just that prices are going up. You are getting less for your money too.

Anyone else notice the packaging getting smaller?

Sorry, @Robbie...there is sufficiently an element of politics as to why prices have gone up and products are getting smaller / shorter. Please can you delete this post.

  • Robbie changed the title to Food Prices Going Up. (Non political)

This thread is not political and shouldn't be treated as such. The thread has been posted to discuss price rises of various goods & the size of those goods in relation to the price charged.

Just to clarify, let's have a look at the components.

Imported foodstuffs, costs of customs checks at docks, processing centres, legal and tax paperwork, (political)

Rise in employers NI contributions, such costs are passed on in product prices. (political)

Chocolate commodity prices in particular have risen especially this year.

So how do the sweet manufacturers respond....making the offering much smaller.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think @robbie can delete this thread it’s up to a moderator to delete it if it’s deemed political.

Personal I don’t think it is political unless people start bringing politics into it and it turns political instead of talking about shopping.

I’ve noticed toothpaste tubes have got smaller and don’t last as long but the price has gone up.

Thanks @Fan of Big Tone, points you have made acknowledged.

I still stand by that the thread questions the underlying reasons for price rises. Of which there is a political element to it

I think best thing is to keep an eye on it and see how it develops. I see @Robbie has marked it non political hopefully that will discourage any political talk.

What is Shrinkflation?

Shrinkflation is the practice of reducing the size, weight, or quantity of a product while maintaining or even increasing the price.

So they even have a name for this practice.

I'm sure consumers would rather just pay a little more for their goods rather than the crafty practice of reducing the size & hope consumers don't notice.

I’ve put a “risk of closure” notice on, it will be closed if politics starts being discussed.

Sorry @Fan of Big Tone there is sufficient reasoning why price rises includes a political element, otherwise one is failing to do justice as to WHY the price rises are happening

Regarding toothpaste , the FT referred to Aston University's analysis that chemicals was "one of the most exposed sectors to Brexit shock”.

I don't want this topic to go off topic, but I think the majority of topics could be made political, or deemed to be political.

This thread has guidance for posters if they are in any doubt. It is a non political thread. I don't see why there should be any reason for anyone to make it political.

@Piethagoram you’re a moderator if you think it’s political then close it, the fact that you’ve mentioned the “B” word has probably turned it political now. 😁

@Robbie One has to question the environment as to why prices are going up or shrinkflation. The political element within this environment is one of the fundamentals. I am therefore taking on @Fan of Big Tone advice and closing this subject
