Dorking sign fan to play in goal

Dorking Wanderers, who beat Notts in an actual game of football just three years ago, have signed a 54-year-old fan to play in goal after their only goalkeeper got injured. The former North Holmwood keeper hung up his gloves in 1997. But he still plays walking football, so that's OK.

Deal Dunn – Terry Joins The Wanderers

Long-time Wanderers fan Terry Dunn has joined the side on a short-term contract.

I knew I shouldn't have given up hope. Where are my gloves?

Wow, I was reading it expecting some sort of joke to be revealed at the end. Nope they are deadly serious. I might be doing all 55-year-olds a disservice here but is he going to be able to get himself up off the ground once he’s dived to make a save… Can he still dive to make a save?

It’ll generate headlines but surely one of the outfield players is a better option for one match. It's National League South as well, there a good players in that division, Frank Vincent now plays for Dorking. The opposition will be shooting every time they get the ball, good luck to him, he’ll need it!

Me too @menzinho! Surely they have a youth team player, or failing that a free agent? Maybe this is a publicity stunt, but I'm really not sure. Either way this is tinpottery of the highest order!

So there’s still hope that at 73 I could emulate the great Tony Hateley and play up front for Notts, I can still run and jump, put me up front when Jatta tires at 80 minutes and I’ll do the business, come on Notts you know it makes sense. rollonfloorlaughing

Proud to be a Notts County Supporter for over 60 years.

Poor Dorking, a friend told me this before Notts kicked off against Fleetwood.

I was led to believe the fan was asked to play from the stands, but this doesn't seem to be the case, and I ask myself, why not just go out and sign a proper keeper? Even if it was someone young who had been released from a league club. It's great for the fan, but nothing more than a publicity stunt otherwise.

Dorking described Dunn as a "staunch supporter" and "multiple promotion winner" at local level in a statement on their website.

"Playing in goal is like riding a bike – you never forget it," said Dunn.

I respect his comments about wanting to keep a clean sheet, but the "riding the bike" comment is a very humorous quip. If he concedes a hatful of goals, the opposition is going to have their fun taunting him even more, knowing this.

I can see a meme coming!!

It looks like he wasn't in the squad after all @Chris. Should have realised it was a publicity stunt after the walking football comment 😄

A good April's fools has gone out of the window.

I didn't look much into it, just clicked the link but it appears they have signed Joe Wright from Barnet.
